Jailbreakers kick iOS 4 in the bootrom

Hackerz, jailbreakerz and all the iBadBoys will be having a little party this morning on news that those iPhone hackers over at the iPhone and Chronic Dev Teams have succeeded in jailbreaking iOS 4.1.

This time around jailbreaker types can thank iPhone hacker pod2g of Chronic Dev Team who previously found the 24kpwn exploit. This time he’s found another bootrom based exploit which can jailbreak all iOS based devices on the latest iOS 4.1 firmware.

The impact of using a bootrom exploit is that users should be able to change boot and recovery mode logos among many other things.

Also, because this exploit targets such a low-level part of the operating system, it will be challenging for Apple to stop the jailbreak. Don’t get too excited thought – the exploit isn’t available yet, there’s still work to do.

Meanwhile Dev-Team members advise jailbreakers not to upgrade to iOS 4.1, while more faint-hearted users may choose to skip this chapter if they can’t figure the technical complexity of jailbreaking, which Apple will cut warranties over if it susses you out.
