Good news from billionaire Richard Branson’s iPad publishing venture — Project: you can download Project 1 for free for the holidays. And, as this video shows, the winner of the title’s competition to design the front cover of issue two has been announced.

Billionaires are in a land-grab for the future of iPrint, with media magnate Rupert Murdoch destined to introduce The Daily next month.

We’ve received the following from the Project team.

“Firstly, we’ve just announced the winner of our competition to design the front cover of our crowd-sourced issue planned for early next year.

“Secondly, with the iPad set to be one of the top gifts this holiday season, some of our key partners are kindly sponsoring Project as a festive gift. Courtesy of Virgin America, Virgin Blue and Virgin Mobile Canada, issue one will be free to all people downloading it between 23rd & 29th December.

Issue two will reach the App Store on January 7, the source said.
