Otterbox Defender for third-generation iPad review

We’ve been testing out the Otterbox Defender case for the third-generation iPad for a while now, and the case is exactly what we have come to expect from Otterbox. The case is very high quality, rugged, yet still light and thin enough to carry. The Otterbox Defender for the third-generation iPad is essentially the iPad version of the Otterbox Defender for iPhone, so it offers unrivaled protection from dents, scratches, falls, and more. Here’s what you need to know about the Defender for the third-generation iPad:

  • The case includes multiple layers: a thin plastic membrane that the iPad actually sits in, a rugged and heavy (yet well sized) plastic casing that protects the iPad from dents, scratches and falls, and a third (optional) back plate for even extra protection.
  • The case includes a screen protector that is built into the first, plastic membrane/layer. The protector is built in to the case so no application to the iPad’s display is necessary. Screen protectors are a great addition for iPads, but the process of sticking them to the display can be hectic and troublesome. Otterbox’s Defender adds the protection of a screen protector but loses the trouble.
  • The Defender properly covers the iPad’s external features such as the home button, front-facing FaceTime camera, speaker grill on the back, dock connector on the bottom (with a flap), silent/ringer/orientation switch (with a flap), side volume keys, back camera, sleep/wake button, back Apple logo (through a clear film), and top microphone. It’s hard to find a case that offers such strong protection in such a thin body.
  • The additional back piece offers the convenience of a built in stand for typing, video watching, and more.

The Otterbox Defender for the third-generation iPad is a one-of-a-kind case. It offers serious protection in a still thin and light case design. The case is very versatile as proven by its additional back cover that doubles as a stand, it’s built in screen protector, and flaps for accessing less commonly used functions like the dock connector and ringer switch. We highly recommend this case for anyone who uses their iPad in environments where damage is possible. With its relatively thin and light design, this case is also great for the iPad enthusiast who wants top notch iDevice protection. The Defender sells for $89.95 and comes in several colors and styles.
