Samsung responds to new iPhones: will focus on China, says 64-bit chips coming for Galaxy phones

upload

In an interview with the Korea Times, Samsung executives respond to Apple’s recent announcements in typical Samsung fashion. In order to better compete with Apple in China, Samsung confirmed that it would focus more on the huge Mainland market.

For example, the company says it has received clearance from Chinese authorities to sell TDD-LTE devices, to enable Samsung to offer phones that work on the world’s largest carrier, China Mobile.  As a result of “changing market situations” (i.e. Apple), Samsung is accelerating its schedule for releasing these Chinese-friendly devices. Apple is expected to announce a partnership with China Mobile to sell the iPhone before the end of the year.

In addition, Shin, Samsung’s co-CEO announced that Samsung’s next Galaxy phones will feature 64-bit architectures, to rival the A7 in the iPhone 5s.

“Not in the shortest time. But yes, our next smartphones will have 64-bit processing functionality,” Shin said, adding he followed the media coverage of Apple’s new iPhone.

Shin’s noncommittal reply indicates that although 64-bit chips are on the roadmap, they will not arrive this year. Meanwhile, the iPhone 5s ships on September 20th.

While it is easy to make fun of Samsung for stereotypically copying everything Apple, it is important to remember that they are also likely making Apple’s 64-bit A7 processors.

Samsung will catch up within a year or less. They are fairly expert at ramping up quickly, and they could always pay ARM for a custom 64 bit chip if they wanted one.

I am sure they will react to the iPhone motion sensor as well. This handy chipset will be available in all androids withing a couple years to be sure. One huge mistake is to count Samsung out. LG and HTC? I think you can count them out safely. They’re losing their ability to compete, just like Blackberry. Nokia? Newly found deep pockets will help them catch up, but it may be a huge struggle for them.

Yes Samsung will soon be on the road to copying ( I mean ” catching up ” )

I believe you mean Apple is finally on the road to catching up. Apple has been way way way behind for years and is now copying Android and Windows Phone to play catch up. It’s ridiculous that you sheep can’t see it. Not that I’m saying it’s a bad thing, This new iOS actually looks like something that might be usable, I will install it on my 4S before I decide whether or not to switch, but Apple has been so far behind in terms of OS functionality for a long, long time.

The copy machine game can only last them so long. At some point they will begin to lose badly because they never tried to beat Apple, only imitate them. That has failure written all over it.

Google, like microsoft in mac vs. pc days, is the only winner besides Apple. They created a shit operating system that any phone maker can use. And every phone maker will use, except those that care about a quality experience.

Honestly if I were to recommend anything to anyone besides iPhone it would be Windows Phone, as I admire what Microsoft is trying to do (which is copy Apple, but better).

Apple is copying Android and Windows Phone all over the place. Seriously, what the fuck is with you people?

I don’t understand your point. This interview is a response by Samsung to Apple’s announcements. No fanboyism here — just facts.

Sammy is really fast in catching up on Apple.

But I thought 64 but doesn’t matter? That’s what somebody on the Internet with a Samsung phone told me

    • rahhbriley - 11 years ago

I read that too. Now I’m just confused.

      • mkeita77 - 11 years ago

Yeah I saw that too, and their argument seems to display a vast knowledge of the socalled 64 bit and mobile computing. Or maybe Sammy is just going to add something fake and call it 69 bit.

Of course your gonna get 64bit Samesung, of course

I do the same thing. For those hell bent on not having an iPhone (for reasons beyond me) I always suggest a Lumia or Blackberry. When they ask about getting an Android phone (which invariably means a Samsung phone) I tell them “It’s noting but an oversized, cheaply built, dinner plate full of a bunch of gimmick features that you will turn off the preserve it’s meager battery man.”
