While the Developer Center still shows iTunes 11.1 beta 2, which was released August 16, today’s Mavericks Developer Preview 8 includes an updated version of iTunes 11.1 (build 110, as compared to 48 previously).

iOS 7 device icons are included in this build and a new “Apps” organizer for configuring apps on iOS devices (Thanks, Filipe!):

Also noteworthy are two new buttons in the podcasts section for accessing old episodes and a new sidebar for settings.

While listening to iTunes Radio, the history button now shows songs that were last played (along with audio preview and purchase buttons):

When you’re down to just one final skip, “1 skip left” appears near the skip button while listening to iTunes Radio:

With iTunes 11.1, a notification appears every time the song changes. In the latest beta, there is an option to turn off this notification in the Preferences pane and the option to keep song changes in Notification Center is also present.

The update makes the shuffle button work again and disables the unlimited skips on iTunes Radio loophole.

iTunes 11.1, which brings with it Apple’s streaming service, iTunes Radio, is required for syncing devices that are on iOS 7 which will be released on Wednesday. Mavericks itself, however, will be released late next month.

Ok we need itunes 11.1 to install ios7 on our phones and the ios 7 release is less than two days away and they are still screwing around with betas…smh.

The software needed for this year’s iphone launch are still very behind and is going to cause the launch to be a disaster.

Yeah Apple has no idea how to do a product roll out, they should be consulting random anonymous people on the Internet.

What are you talking about? Apple like many other large companies have screwed up before…siri, maps, etc. Where have you been?

I’m just pointing out that with such a short time to the ios 7 release why haven’t we gotten the necessary software?

So Apple is going to release a new version of itunes and ios 7 all at the same time, and you think they’re not going to have any issues. At the very least, they should have released itunes earlier just to keep their servers from getting hammered.

I don’t think you’ll need iTunes 11.1 — developers have been installing iOS 7 for months now. Actually, you shouldn’t need iTunes at all since you can just install iOS over the air via WiFi.

I’m guessing iTunes 11.1 will come out with Mavericks, so it seems reasonable to me that it would still be in Beta for a bit longer.

As for the launch being a disaster, I hope not! Software is always hard, it’s pretty much always takes longer than expected, and Apple has been making a lot of substantial (even if under-the-hood) changes in iOS and Mac OS. I’m excited for the improvements, and I think they’ve got a good chance of pulling off a fairly smooth launch (which would be a pretty miraculous thing!).

Ha, you’re right…article says iTunes 11.1 is required for syncing (which is important to a lot of people) so I guess it is probably scheduled to come out this week! Too bad I can’t delete my comment! :)

So… Apple releases an iTunes 11 beta literally two days before iOS 7 is about to be released? Seems like excellent timing.

  4. Beta has been out, just not attached to Mavericks.
