Apple touts iPad’s abilities in new poetry-themed ad, ‘What will your verse be?’ website

Apple certainly isn’t shying away from using the iPad as a camera anymore.

Airing today is a brand-new TV advertisement touting the abilities of the iPad. The ad is in a serious tone and is voiced over by a quote from the film Dead Poet’s Society. Re/Code has the text from the advertisement:

We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering — these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love — these are what we stay alive for.

To quote from Whitman,

“O me, O life of the questions of these recurring.
Of the endless trains of the faithless. Of cities filled with the foolish. What good amid these, O me, O life?
Answer: that you are here. That life exists and identity. That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.”

“That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.”

What will your verse be?

To go along with the TV ad, Apple has also posted a new webpage with the ad’s theme. This new page shares stories of the iPad being used in film-making, sports, and education. Original from movie below:

These commercials are perfect for two very important reasons. They don’t have to compare their product to anything, just relate it to someone and their experiences. And they are good enough that you don’t mind watching it to the end no matter how many times you see it.

I hope this trend continues longer than Mac vs PC, longer than Switchers, I hope this continues unless they actually manage to find something better. And even then, I hope this continues.

this is a really cool ad and I KNEW it was Robin Williams voice almost immediately!

Looks like there’s a sneak-peak in there – to the best of my knowledge there’s no app that controls the Lego Mindstorms EV3 robot.

This ad is not that great. Just because it has an Apple product in it does not equal greatness.

After watching, I did not feel inspired to do anything.

Whereas the Christmas ad with the boy recording video was a great ad and the best thus far.

As for the comments about Apple not comparing products, why would they? What % of iPad shoppers can name one hardware spec in the device? Other than targeting the (clueless) “creative” group, there isn’t much they can do to show that iPad is better than other top devices in a way that will make non-geeks understand what they are talking about.

I do not care for Apple but they understand that most people do not care what is inside as long as the device is easy to use. And for that, I salute them for identifying that group and mastering the sale.

Not so much different then the video showing how people use iPads from the fall Apple event. Still see this as a prelude to the larger iPad Pro and showing even more you can do with it.

    Nice commercial.

Sounds like Robin William’s voicing over, in his story telling voice.

  13. Who is reading this in the TV ad?

This is absolutely dreadful, showing wind turbines that can never be more than 20% to 30% efficient, one of the least efficient means of generating electricity allied to one of the most useful tools in todays technological world. Somebody needs their head examining.

O iOS7, O Safari of the Crashes of these recurring.
Of the endless Springboard Reloads of the faithless. Of iPhones filled with the foolish. What good amid these, O iOS7, O Safari?

Its no more a quote from Dead Poets Society than its a quote from an Apple Ad.

The poem is attributed to Walt Whitman (1892).

I really started to hate these new Apple’s ads. Not like those when Steve Jobs was still in charge, simple, truthful.
