Starbucks releases iOS 7-friendly iPhone app with a few new tricks

We’ve already seen Starbucks show off a new way to pay and tip your barista in the long-awaited update to its iPhone app it previously announced, and today it is finally available and features a brand new design for iOS 7 when buying your latte.

starbucks-3.0_1xPreviously, the Starbucks app featured a number of various tabs on the bottom navigation bar, but the updated version has been dramatically simplified to focus on three main sections under the headers Pay, Stores, and Gift.

Reward member profiles, messages, and Pick of the Week content is now featured in a clean view with the app’s new tip feature as well.

The update also comes with a new icon to represent the refreshed design of the app.

However, the update does remove customized drink saving within the app. Starbucks advises you screenshot the view of your customized drink to save it if you use this feature.

Starbucks for iPhone is available for free on the App Store (although your milage may vary for the next few minutes following yesterday/this morning’s iTunes Connect issues).

Pretty nice if you like Starbucks. I use the card to pay for coffee all the time. Always nice to get new features added.

    • I just wish they had one outside of US…

I’m sure they’ll expand. I feel you though. It’s definitely a pain not having it everywhere.

      • They have a Starbucks Canada app, albeit not updated as of yet.

I thought this new version was going to allow drink ordering from within the app without standing in line. Did that feature not make it?

There is a “Shake to Pay” feature. I have to test it out to see if that’s the one or if it just brings up the payment card to be scanned (which would be a massively lame waste of an idea).

Yea seems like “Shake to Pay” just brings up the card so the barista can scan it :-/

They’re releasing that feature later on this year.

In Canada, we have two apps. The Starbucks Canada (the old one), and this new app (which only says Starbucks). I love the design!

The app looks and is so much better now. I’m gonna have to go get a drink and try it out!

  5. I have always found the app to be clumsy. I use it only to check the balance on my card. Paying from my iPhone I perceive would be a problem. I get Starbucks at Safeways from time to time. They sometimes have difficulty understanding what my Gold card is about…keep asking me if its a gift card.

    Did Louie Mantia design this?

Aw. I don’t have the update yet even though I’m on auto update, so I tried out the soon-to-be-removed drink customizer just now, since I hadn’t used it before. A neat feature! I like how it tells you the name of what you make so you can describe it in the starbucks terms, and also know what the options are. The only thing it lacked was the ability to send that order to the barista directly so you don’t have to spell it out! (Playing with it, I just built a “Decaf Ristretto Tall 2-pump Hazelnut 1-pump Vanilla Whole Milk with Whip latte.” It looks tasty and I’d love to try it but I’d be obligated to kill myself if I made a 14-word coffee order!!

They should let you create a barcode that would transmit the details to the POS so the barista can make the notations on your cup without you looking crazy.

    • Pretty much everything you described is gone in this update. I hope they bring back the customer drink maker. Talking Starbucks language is good for picking up chicks.

There’s a neat video about this app over on YouTube, you might want to link to it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlQDttTWM6o
