Tim Cook welcomes Microsoft CEO Nadella’s Office for iPad to App Store

Following the debut of Microsoft Office for the iPad earlier today, Apple CEO Tim Cook has taken to Twitter to endorse the launch and congratulate recently appointed Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Microsoft Office for iPad brings the complete office suite of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel to Apple’s tablets with a freemium business model.

Apple is also promoting Office on the App Store’s homepage (thanks, Chad):

The applications are free to download from the App Store if you simply want to view documents, but if you want to edit and share, that will be a $99 Office 365 annual subscription fee.

Tim Cook’s mention of the launch is not unprecedented. In the early days of Apple, Steve Jobs frequently praised Office for Mac, and Microsoft and Apple were famously early partners in the software world. Today’s launch represents the next step in the business relationship and the advancement of technological platforms from the mouse and keyboard-controlled Mac to touchscreen tablets.

Or… Tim could have been going for some irony on Office taking so long to launch on the iPad:

    “Nadella’s Office for iPad ”

Yikes…that’s a bit extreme don’t you think? Tim Cook’s tweet welcomes Microsoft to the iPad/App Store (by way of mentioning Nadella), as well as Office.

He certainly didn’t give you any reason to call it “Nadella’s Office”…LOL

Wait, why wouldn’t you want the blame for this train wreck to be placed squarely on whomever’s in charge over there?

Ballmer’s time is over. A new failure has arisen. Now let’s get this train wreck a rollin’!

      • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

Wait, why is a train wreck? Isn’t this what everyone was pining for since 2010? Office for iPad? It’s HERE!!!

Oh wait….perhaps you were referring to the $100 a year for life subscription require to use the Apps….compared to iWork….for Free.

        Oh yeah…..

The canard “you can’t do real work on an iPad” is now officially dead. It was already officially stupid.

Its good to see that everyone is getting along. Lets hope that the New Microsoft CEO, realises the mistake he has made and stops people from having to pay the terrible subscription fee.

    • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

Why on Earth would they realize that mistake? Don’t you realize that the ONLY way Microsoft was ever going to do this was if it required a $100 a year for life subscription?

Microsoft is quickly running out of a revenue streams. A few million 1 time purchases on the App Store is not enough to sustain them.

      • fanaticalabouttech - 10 years ago

Yeah I agree with your comment, I was being slightly sarcastic when I mentioned the fact that everyone was getting along. In terms, of the rest of the comment, the point that I was trying to get across was the fact that I don’t think that Microsoft, is going to make as much money as they think they are. Ok so they will probably end up getting a million people purchasing it, but they will also probably end up getting a million people who don’t like it and don’t agree with it. What I feel that they could do, is either lower the subscription free, or rethink there business strategy. As £75 in the UK or $100 in the US, is what I consider to be too much for people to pay, as this is something that they are going to use on the iPhone or iPad, that they probably wouldn’t use as much compared to if they were going to use it on there computer.

  4. Don’t forget, if someone downloads Office for iPad and starts their new subscription from the iPad at $7.99/month, that means Apple gets $2.397 a month. Microsoft is going to make Apple alot of money by releasing this.

Apple isn’t gaining anything but 3 more apps to the App Store…Apple is discounting the price of the subscription to office 365 only just to be nice to iPad users. Besides that Microsoft gets all the money for Office 365. Apple only takes money for the app and in-app purchases but the apps themselves are free and there is no “in-app purchase” for these.
