9/11 Memorial Museum app debuts on iPhone ahead of public opening on May 21st

This week the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City recognized its completion ahead of its public opening on May 21st, and today an official 9/11 Memorial Museum app for iPhone and iPod touch has been made available.

The app’s purpose is to aid museum attendees and enhance the tour experience by turning your smartphone into a personal tour guide. The primary tour, Witnessing History, is narrated by actor Robert De Niro, who has supported the Museum’s effort alongside former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The tour consists of thirteen sections total, each accompanied with a 1-3 minute narration and transcript.

An additional tour, Discovering History, is specifically tailored for children and families and offers a separate narration.

The app is packed with accessibility features as well including language support for English, Spanish, French, and more. Not only does it feature voiceovers for both tours and transcripts of both voiceovers, but it also features a dedicated tour for hearing impaired attendees with embedded videos using American sign lanaguage.

In addition to the Robert De Niro narrated tour, a lengthy Audio Description tour is included which covers an extensive amount of content within the museum. An archeology and architecture focused tour is also included within the app as well as an indoor detailed map of the museum.

The museum is currently observing a Dedication Period beginning today through May 20th for “9/11 families, 9/11 rescue and recovery workers, active duty first responders, survivors and lower Manhattan residents and business owners”, and the museum will open to the public on May 21st. Tickets can be reserved at 911memorial.org.

Even if you aren’t in New York City and can’t attend the museum, the app contains of wealth of information and content that can be appreciated from just your smartphone.
