Here’s your first look at OS X 10.10 Yosemite

BpI0HDxIcAARUN0.jpg-large

Looks like the Macs running OS X “Yosemite” for today’s demo are running up on stage uncovered and in public view. A flatted dock, white trash can, red iTunes icon, green FaceTime app, iOS 7-style Safari icon, as well as redesigned Finder, Calendar, Messages, Settings and other icons are visble.

Get a closer look at the icons below:

I don’t like the new dock. It looks like the ones from the old versions of OS X

    • Patrick Kormann - 10 years ago

It’s a pity. Since 10.0 I liked every version of OS X. Now, it looks like the designers went blind and were just throwing design elements at the screen :(
It’s not only how things look (like 30 years ago, when there weren’t resources for shadows etc) , it’s also how they are misplaced.

  2. Wojciech Zadworny - 10 years ago

Looks like going back to the past with this rectangle Dock :(

  3. Nils Goosse (@NilsG6) - 10 years ago

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    • Ivan Zdane - 10 years ago

      Agreed

    • Kevin Garneau - 10 years ago

you clearly are not an apple fan if you dont like change. just stay on 10.6 and leave it be. the new look is fresh i like it!

      • Ahmed Rajabli - 10 years ago

Nothing fresh, ugly ui with acid colors. RIP os X

      • i just played with developer’s beta for a couple of hours…

it’s unspeakably ugly and unpleasant to use.

there are a lot of ways to “simplify” UI without making it butt ugly.

      • Victor Gao - 10 years ago

You can’t just say that people that like this release are “apple fans”, are the ones who don’t are not. We, people, have minds, we have opinions, okay? You can not have them, but I guarantee you, it is better to have one.

  4. iSRS - 10 years ago

Like it! Not really a difference, just iOS like dock

  5. Pong Trairatvorakul - 10 years ago

This is going to be fun.

  6. Brian Ramage (@BJMRamage) - 10 years ago

interesting…spotted the different icons…looks almost 4:3 on screen Wallpaper looks really nice!

    • Tyson LaVar Edwards - 10 years ago

The demos will be shown on the auditorium projectors, so makes sense to have the screens set to a resolution and aspect ratio that will present best for the audience.

  7. Harold Davis Jr. - 10 years ago

    ^^ looks great

  8. Justin Harbour - 10 years ago

    Somebody made a mistake….. :)

  9. Gerson Silva - 10 years ago

    yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees

  10. iSRS - 10 years ago

New Safari, FaceTime, iTunes, Settings icons, and a new icon between iTunes and FaceTime

  11. kyle (@kyleunwin_) - 10 years ago

looks exactly like the dock in 10.4 before they changed it to the current one

  12. hillmaxwell - 10 years ago

    I Like it!

  13. rlowhit - 10 years ago

Red grabs attention, prelude to changes for an application that has not been clicked on for sometime?

  14. Dan Eaton - 10 years ago

The left and right hand bezels look wider than my late 2012 iMac, not sure what late 2013 looks like off hand – or are these just Apple Displays?

    • iSRS - 10 years ago

      it’s an angled shot

      • iSRS - 10 years ago

oh, and likely some distortion due to the projectors?

      • Dan Eaton - 10 years ago

I’m looking at mine from an angle as we speak and it’s not that wide.

    • Túlio Fonseca - 10 years ago

maybe those are the new retina thunderbolt displays (4K)

      ;-)

    • P. G. (@p_giguere1) - 10 years ago

It’s in mirror mode and connected to a 4:3 projector, so there has to be letterboxing on either the iMac or projector. On the iMac is the logical choice in order for the projected image to be as large as possible.

      • Dan Eaton - 10 years ago

I’m not disputing the image. What I am saying is that in relation to my iMac that I am looking at right now the desktop and doc appear to be encased in what appears to be an iMac with much larger side bezels. Both iMacs in the image are exactly the same. I may be wrong but to my eyes it is different.

      • Túlio Fonseca - 10 years ago

makes sense what Dan is saying…

    • Jakob Axén Johansson - 10 years ago

The resolution is adjusted to the projector, giving it an aspect ratio of 4:3

  15. Alexander DeLuca - 10 years ago

I was hoping for a MUCH more radical redesign :\

  16. STOLEN FROM ANDROID!!!!

  17. Casey Hayes (@Chayes2014) - 10 years ago

    Love that background though.

  18. Josh Linne - 10 years ago

The red iTunes logo is iTunes Radio. The real iTunes is on the left of the dock

  19. matthewmspace - 10 years ago

I really like this design. And lesson hopefully learned Apple, turn off your keynote devices.

  20. Jasper Yeung - 10 years ago

pli don’t tell me thats the truth, from that picture, the new osx looks terrible…. :(

  21. Lalo Valencia Paz - 10 years ago

I can’t help but think it’s fake, the aspect ratio is weird, the margins on the side are way to big and the light seems to affect everything but the display

  22. What a sad, sad day for Apple and OS X. An utterly hideous glimpse for what is to come. I guess aesthetics isn’t an important consideration in design any longer. Can’t help but wonder what the late, great Steve Jobs would make of this new direction. Shame they couldn’t have make iOS look more like OS X, but that’s fantasy land of course. It certainly couldn’t look worse than this. So, so disappointed. Windows is looking better every day, and I never thought I’d be saying that!

    • Well good, you can go convert and stop spewing nonsense on here. Bye!

      • Why would I try to convert anyone Chad? I’ve been using, and loving Macs since 89′ So I’m a little colourful in expressing my opinion. So what? Simply because you don’t agree with it, doesn’t make it nonsense. Bye!

      • Ahmed Rajabli - 10 years ago

You saying “nonsense”? Go fuck yourself, stupid applofaggot!
I used to work on mac os since tiger, before iphone appeared! And mac os that time was best os!
Now it is really sad, mac os just died and you jumping on it’s grave, you idiot!
        Rip mac os x

    • Ry L - 10 years ago

      I think it looks good

    • Yes (@AMillah) - 10 years ago

Are you kidding? It looks virtually the same. Much less dramatic of a redesign than I anticipated, which is good for all the people like you who cling on to the past and refuse to move forward. And you do realize that this is how the dock originally looked in Mac OSX 10.0-10.4…..right? Aside from the blurred translucency, its literally the same as it once was. Which looks much better.

Seriously, get over it. If Steve Jobs was the person introducing this, I can guarantee your reaction would be different.

      • Well if the recent past is where beautiful, considered, timeless design resides, then it’s worth remembering (or ‘clinging to’ as you say). In any case I was referring not to the dock, but the icons thrown onto it (should have been more specific) – as I agree the rest looks relatively unchanged. I love Apple and will likely always stick with them.

Re: Jobs – yeah, well there’s nothing wrong with honouring and respecting someone who had such impeccable taste in design. And no, you can’t guarantee my reaction any more than I can guarantee you’ll flame the next poster who disagrees with your sense of ‘acceptable’ design. But let’s face it, it’s quite likely you will.

    • I totally agree with you.. I would rather switch to xubuntu, than install this shit..

  23. Alex H (@MetalHaze) - 10 years ago

If you use the Dock you are a n00b. Just hide it and stick to using Alfred. All problems solved. The Dock is there for people who have no idea how to use a Mac.

  24. I reckon its likely that will link to their Beats deal, however that’s just a thought.

  25. iSRS - 10 years ago

And, wow! So much hate for something that looks 95% the same as it does today!

  26. andreww500 - 10 years ago

Looks nicer than I was expecting actually.

  27. nullifiedone - 10 years ago

    Looks like osx tiger :p

  28. jorisvzadelhoff - 10 years ago

iTunes turns red because of Beats Music? I don’t know, we’ll see.

  29. Barry Kraakman - 10 years ago

… Macs running OS X Mavericks? OS X Yosemite it is! ;)

  30. Nick David (@N1ck2D) - 10 years ago

That dock is really ugly. That Itunes icon is ugly. WTF is wrong with Apple ?

  31. Ronen Magid - 10 years ago

where is my nice dock ? this is TIGER…..

  32. Ken Collins - 10 years ago

First they named OS X after cats, then loners (Mavericks). But instead of continuing with OS X Renegades, they are going to place names in California? Mavericks is a maverick indeed. Based on the previews, I’m not downgrading to OS ten ten ten. The user interface, that is, the part that interfaces with me, is ugly and harsh, and has all the charm of an 80s video game.

Yes, I found out that Mavericks is a beach that is very famous among people who live within ten miles of Cupertino, or some people who surf. It isn’t a good choice. To Apple Store employees, “OS X Renegades” was always why-didn’t-I-think-of-it hilarious.

    • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

So you know absolutely nothing whatsoever about the software, yet you feel confident that it is a “downgrade” and will be idiotically not updating to it.

Okay. Why do we care about your “opinion”, then? $0.50 per post from Samsung must go a long way.

      • Ken Collins - 10 years ago

If this is what it looks like, the UI is definitely a downgrade. I’m sure that what’s under the hood is an upgrade, but I won’t upgrade to it if the only part of it I can see looks as flat as a Yogi Bear cartoon, ugly, and cheap. Under the hood, I’m sure it will be an upgrade, but if I wanted ugly, I would have bought Windows. Maybe you would marry an ugly girl because she has a nice personality even though she is flat, but I’m a l little picky. I think that the UI should at least bathe and comb its hair once a month and not get dressed out of the laundry hamper.

Why do you care what I think? Instead of getting mad and calling me names, you have learned an important piece of information. Some Mac users still expect Apple to treat them like adults and give them a beautiful UI that doesn’t look like it was designed for ages 4-8.

I stopped watching Saturday morning cartoons as a child when they got flat and angular, and the characters “moved” by standing still across a repeating background. Maybe this UI is distracting us from a truly beautiful UI that they are going to release. I hope so. But if the pictures are genuine, I’m out of here. I’m to old to use my Mac while I’m in my jammies eating Cocoa Puffs.

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

Okay, enjoy your FUD. Now you have a full DOLLAR! Imagine how many pieces of gum that will buy.

  33. Safari looks snappier

  34. Taste_of_Apple - 10 years ago

Reblogged this on Taste of Apple and commented:
Looks good. Not as drastic a change as I expected. Very nice so far.

  35. Ken Collins - 10 years ago

There is an small area in California called Shenandoah. It may have been named by homesick Virginia settlers, because the Shenandoah Valley (200 miles long), the Shenandoah River (55 miles long), Shenandoah County (1772), and the Shenandoah National Park (200,000 acres) are in Virginia, and the song, “O Shenandoah,” which dates before the California gold rush, is about Virginia.

Some Californians are a bit geographically myopic, but not without cause: on a population density map, California is pretty isolated. So, who’s willing to bet that there will be an OS X Shenandoah?

  36. Austin E. Gieselman - 10 years ago

iOS icon…wouldn’t that suggest an emulator for iOS apps..if not then they should make that

  37. André Hedegaard Petersen - 10 years ago

Sigh, its looking more and more like iOS7 UI design :(
Terrible icon colours. Sigh sigh sigh.
Oh well, guess we don’t have a choice.

And that translucent menu bar thing, you know, Microsoft made this on Vista in 2006. Thats 8 years ago.
Apple should have done this years and years ago but only now are they waking up.

Tim was more cheerful and delightful than before, not so boring as previous presentations. Thats a good improvement, well done Tim.

Am glad they dropped the ever so uninformative and boring “we opened xx amount of stores this year, here are the videos”, but I suppose that will come in September alongside the iPhone release.

  38. I’m more interested in the new user features than the color change to the buttons and icons. Just tweak them with something else. I’ve been doing that forever to personalize things. I like, no. LOVE. the update. They’ve competed with and out-done themselves. Again. They never cease to pull the rabbit out of the hat right when everyone starts complaining they aren’t innovating enough. This OS X/iOS 8 combination is going to be STOUT. No reason to leave the walled garden now. Windows and Android with never, ever work this well together or even anywhere close to resembling the cohesion between the two platforms. Anyone who would argue with me, did you watch the Keynote? This is what Apple is all about. They’ve really smoothed this over. Instead of abandoning the idea, or just simply calling it “good enough” like any other company would do, they kept thinking and kept hammering away to get the wrinkles out. This is such a nice update for both platfoms. All the more reason to keep an iMac on my desk and an iPhone in my pocket.

  39. Tad (@Tadtv) - 10 years ago

Can’t wait for OS X YellowStone where the dock is all grey and just shapes- square, circle, octogon, etc. Oh crap. More of this direction. Such ugly flat icons. There goes my Mac. Now that it looks just like a Windows PC and does about the same stuff basically, what idiot would pay $2600 for a laptop like I just did when you can get a Windows for $500. Sorry Apple you are losing me sooooooo fast. Love those Kindergarten designers.

    • André Hedegaard Petersen - 10 years ago

Haha, thats great. My sentiments as well. Although I’ll stick with Mac as its proven to be the better operating system still. (Switched after 25+ years from Microsoft)

  40. Greatness Awakes - 10 years ago

That dock is hideous…. and the iOS7-like design is a huge let down. While Mavericks was beautiful, and had an amazing graphical interface, icons, etc, this just looks like a huge step backward. My though about Mac OS being the most beautiful and best operating system is about to change. This is the direction that post-Jobs Apple is headed…senseless design with no depth. Such a shame.

    • Steve is turning over in his grave, or urn. Or whatever he is in. I like the clean look, but let the icons be! Looks like the Easter bunny pooped all over the UI.

  41. Anyone find that maximize in Safari now full screens the app? Why did they do this? I rarely use fullscreen, and never in a browser. I hope the final release gives us a way to change this back!

  42. I’m playing around with the new os x now ( not a developer ) and playing with iOS 8 on my iPhone 5 and so far I’m loving them lets not make this another hate thing like for example windows 8 i love that to so don’t complain you can get rid of the transparent bar anyway

  43. Jacinto Silva Duro - 10 years ago

It’s ugly as sh*t. Apple is turning their OSes into kid stuff, girlie stuff. Into crap. I’m not going to meetings with that thing in my Mac.

  44. Jim Gao - 10 years ago

    DISGUSTING

  45. Nitin Jain (@mail2jain) - 10 years ago

where do i find my iPhoto in OS X 10.10 yosemite

  46. Jeff (@Jeff_Duan) - 10 years ago

Installed just couple of hours ago, decided to hide the dock…. SURPRISE to get a bigger working area.. lol…

  47. Fakeer - 10 years ago

This is the ugliest OS UI I’ve seen in recent times. I mean is it some kind of twisted humour from Apple or they really think (and more worryingly convinced) that it’s a better UI. For god’s sake, Sir Ivy needs to be shown the door for design’s sake!

    • André Hedegaard Petersen - 10 years ago

At first glance, yes, it does look worse than what we have now. Also they copied the “Aero theme” from Windows Vista (from 2006) which is quite nice really, so am looking forward to that part.
But the change to more and more iOS7 style I really don’t like at all!

But lets give it a chance and see how it goes? Perhaps after a while it will grow on you :)

  48. John Beresford - 10 years ago

Apple, you cannot be serious! I cannot believe the tasteless garbage art that I have seen here. The proposed new Yosemite dock and Icons could not be more tasteless, ugly and without redeeming features, if they tried. The present skilfully designed Icons with their 3D, shadow and magnification are a great pleasure to behold and to use. Clearly, the proposed Yosemite dock and Icons were designed and drawn by primary school children. It is pure rubbish. I will never upgrade to Yosemite unless there is an option to retain the present 3D icons with their shadow and magnifications.

    • mattegt - 10 years ago

It is indeed a real shame. I got really p*ssed off when iOS7 came out because it was so incredibly unergonomic and ugly to boot. Was forced to move to that disaster last week as Skype and others have stopped supporting the beautiful iOS6.

Now I find out that apple is pulling the same sh*t all over again, but this time attacking the desktop / laptop user base, and I’m literally fuming with rage, having until now invested heavily in the Apple ecosystem.

I really don’t see how anyone with the least bit of sense and taste can regard iOS7 and the sad excuse for a OS-X “visual upgrade” depicted here, to be improvements to their predecessors from a visual ergonomic or aesthetic perspective. They’re both unergonomic as h*ll and I for one hate them!

Continuing along this path will in a few releases lead us back to the 90’ies web design. I for one don’t consider an era where lack of insight in usability and where artistic expression was held back by technological limitations to be something *any* company should aim for, least of all Apple.

Monochrome displays would actually be an improvement to Apple’s current iOS choices, as black on white is actually a *huge* step up compared to the gray-text-on-glaring-blinding-white which they’ve settled on for now.

Apple has billions of dollars, but still chose to murder their legacy, a legacy that in large part was built on ever more refined aesthetics and visual ergonomics, in pursuit of what? Of some notion that the pinnacle of aesthetic wonder for a OS UI equals the bare and amateurish design of neutered web pages from decades past. Those old web pages of internet’s infancy were awfully designed by today’s standards, because artists then were *constrained* by what technology was capable of supporting, didn’t understand the medium well, and because frequently no artist at all was even available for the Joe that wanted to put some info out there on a Gopher or Web page.

I’ll stick to my Mavericks for the coming year and pray the lunatic design lead currently roaming the Cupertino hallways, striking down every pillar he can find with his gigantic sledge hammer, will be shown the door, or shot by building security. If the guy hasn’t been put down in a year, I’ll have to start planning an exist strategy.

The L&F of the OS X window manager was the major reason I moved from Linux & Windows to Apple. Now that Apple is dismantling decades of its previous fine work at a quick and steady pace, I have to ask myself why I’m encouraging this travesty through a steady stream of money sent their way. Currently, I see none reason.

As someone else wrote in this thread, no friggin way I’m showing up to a client meeting with the toddler shite presented at WWDC. At present, Gnome, KDE and even Windows all look better than the drivel that is Yosemite [in my opinion].

      • André Hedegaard Petersen - 10 years ago

        Thanks for the great read!
Would you agree that OSX Yosemites “see through windows” are derived from Windows Vista’s Aero design?
I wonder why Apple were so slow to incorporate that. I guess the grey/silver of windows we have now, matches inline with the iMac and older Mac hardware.
I also don’t see a huge improvement in Yosemites looks&appeal, but functionwise it seems to have gotten a notch up.
However, like you, I have to ask myself what the hell kind of mushrooms did Jony Ive eat to make iOS7 and Yosemite so un-ergonomical?
iOS7 with its candy coloured kindergarten icons now creeping onto OSX. We’re really going a step backwards here, such a shame. How can the rest of Apple agree with these design aesthetics at all?

  49. Jared Lamar - 10 years ago

Is anyone else having an issue with the application windows not aligning flush to the top menu bar? There is a 5px margin between them, so basically Apple decided to reduce my screen real estate height by 5px. Thanks a lot, Apple, you fucking assholes.

    • Ulf Aslak - 9 years ago

Yea this was a problem in beta as well. Back then I filed them a ticket, hoping they’d fix it for the official release, which they haven’t. It annoys me too, but now I’m starting to think it’s on purpose which makes it even more annoying.

  50. Aidan Cumming - 9 years ago

Well here we are about a month after release. And good lord, it is just as hideous and back-asswards as we thought in dev version. Was this designed by someone with eyes? It looks like bad cartoonish ripoff of something that used to be OSX. bleagh. Also you can’t have “10.10”. Thats just 11 you big idiots. Or 10.1. The latter makes a lot of sense actually, since it kinda looks like something from 2001. What the heck Apple? Aesthetic is important! please!

    • Aidan,
You’re a little late in installing it. You’re basically reiterating everything we experienced some weeks ago.
I just installed it for a friend yesterday – his first response?
“Why does it have to look so shit?”
      Sigh.
I also don’t like it. Especially those disaster icons, I mean neon blue crap for folders. Or that hideous ghost-like trashcan?
Notifications area is at least better than before.

Still, Aidan, after a few weeks , you’ll slowly get used to it. Keyword here is “slowly”.

I can’t believe Apple could make such a choice. I wonder if its made like this on purpose, to look more gay? You know, coz’ Tim Cook is now officially gay, so perhaps this kind of “style” is to appeal to LBGT rights?

Whatever it is, its a step backwards.

    • iSRS - 9 years ago

Aiden, the looks is going to be a personal taste issue, but I have to say, I do like it. I will admit that it looks better on my Retina MacBook Pro than my 2008 iMac.

As far as version numbers, yes, you can (and is common) have numbers like X.10. This is not the decimal system. Have you ever looked at Chrome (38.0.2125.111) version numbers?

  51. Martyn A Ford - 9 years ago

Rule number 1 unless there is at least a point .3 update (equaling at least 30 plus fixes) e.g. 10.10.3 let everyone else live on the bleeding edge of technology.
If you had a glossy Ferrari would you change it, get rid of 3d glossy chrome curves and make it 2D dull pastel colours, No because it is classic, sexy and legendary.
All mac reviewers glamourise their articles and forget that Apple is still missing a jack, tire iron / spare tyre and warning light for break failure.
Even MS Windows XP came with a defrag tool “DiskWarrior” ( jack, tire iron / spare tyre), as Macs do still slow down and even faster once your drive is 2/3rds full. If your like me I am also so sick to death of Mackeeper (basically anti-virus software and cache cleaner) adverts popping up when I use any browser and the amount of people installing it thinking this is going to fix there speed issues point towards an issue NOT ADDRESS BY fancy user interface updates like Yosemite. The main reason Diskwarrior is and always will be the best software to fix a Mac is the patent process that protects your data while it rebuilds your Index.
The more serious issue with Mac is the fact that the operating system has (no break failure light) no way of access or showing you error recorded on your drives smart chip, which can tell you if your drive has had errors. After a number of errors your hard drive will operate at half speed and show a failing state. This data can be seen if your download a free copy of Smart Utilities from Macupdate. I see this as a major over-site and after seeing many many retail customers either loose all their data or have to pay for recovery I think it is only a mater of time that Apple will have a class action on their hands.
I would rater move back to paying $100+ and get more options to turn things back on than move to a dumber more simplistic minimalist operating system.

  52. lnxp - 9 years ago

It’s hideous and getting less user-friendly. The designers are clearly getting old and they need glasses.
They lost a lot of “affordance”. Without the usual visual clues, it’s sometimes hard to tell what is a clickable button and the flatness looks depressing and unsophisticated.
I, for one will definitely not “upgrade” (sic) to 10.10. I’ll wait until they get their shit together again.
It’s like the guys at Apple are getting senile and are starting to forget UI design 101 (uhm, didn’t they write that very book?)
Or they’re trying to be different…
Either way, it’s a huge step backwards.
I hate to say it, but it’s starting to look like Windows. Never thought that Apple would start copying Microsoft.
I guess, that’s what you get when you lose the guy with the vision… (Jobs).
