Apple seeds Safari 7.1 & 6.2 with WebKit improvements to developers and AppleSeed users

Apple has released a new beta version of Safari to beta testers in the AppleSeed program and Mac developers. The new version for Mavericks is 7.1, while Moutain Lion users will see version 6.2. The update includes several upgrades to the WebKit engine that powers the browser.

According to the release notes, the changes include support for WebGL, IndexedDB, and JavaScript tweaks, among other things. There is also apparently a change to the way the app handles extensions, as the beta disables all installed add-ons by default and the notes request that developers check for any compatiblity issues.

Version 7.1 will likely be the last major update to Safari for Mavericks before the launch of OS X Yosemite, which will include the all-new Safari 8. The full seed notes for this beta are below:

Focus Areas
Please focus testing on the following areas:
• Please test general website compatibility.
• Subpixel rendering is now on by default for all web content. Web sites or
in-app web views with extremely tight design constraints may render
differently.
• CSS object model getters will return fractional double values based on
subpixel layout and rendering metrics instead of rounded integral values. • Please test extension compatibility.
New WebKit Features
• WebGL. Safari support for WebGL allows developers to create 3D experiences that work natively without plug-ins.
• IndexedDB. The IndexedDB API allows web developers to store structured data for web applications that work online or require large amounts of data to be cached client side.
• JavaScript Promises. Safari enables JavaScript authors to more naturally work with asynchronous programming patterns.
• CSS Shapes and Compositing. Using CSS, websites can now easily flow text around images and geometry shapes, and perform image compositing operations on DOM elements.

I have tried to become a tester, but I have not received notification. Yet, I got the new update. IS it only for beta testers?

I’m not a developer but I still have Safari 7.1 Seed 1 showing up in my MAS Updates.

Apple has actually accidentally released safari 7.1 to the public too. And I don’t mean the public beta testers. I mean ALL the public. I made a screenshot of this error for those who know EXACTLY how the mac app store accesses updates from apple’s servers to prove my point:

It should be on the file

    index-10.9seed-10.9-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog.gz

    and

    index-10.9publicseed-10.9-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog.gz

    but NOT

    index-10.9-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog.gz

until safari 7.1 is actually officially publicly released.

I complained on apple’s developer forums about this and so it has now been removed from index-10.9-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog.gz and so is no longer available to the public (unless they are a public beta tester)

The file appleerror.gif has now also been deleted.

I don’t want to try beta version. When it comes full version. http://wp.me/p3zd1e-1E9
