According to figures released by market research company BCN, Asus sold more tablets than Apple during the first half of 2014 in Japan. Asus’ market share rose 8 percent year-over-year during the first half of 2014, the report claims, giving it a 38.9 percent portion of the tablet market in Japan. Apple, on the other hand, holds a 36.4 percent share (via Nikkei). This is the first time Asus has ever held the top spot in Japan, according to the report. The BCN research consists of sales data of 117 “leading digital electronic products” from 22 mass retailers. Price, of course, plays a big factor in Asus’ success in Japan. The Asus-made Nexus 7 costs 20,000 yen in Japan, while Apple’s iPad costs 40,000 yen. The budget MeMo Pad tablet, priced at 20,000 yen, was also apparently very popular. The report also cites Asus’ wide variety of products as a reason for its success, noting that the Android-based Nexus 7 and other various Windows-based tablets were very popular.

Apple held strong in smartphones sales, however, according to the report. The company maintained a better than 50 percent share of the market, while NEC Personal Computers led the way in laptop sales. Overall, however, the report notes that smartphone and notebook sales were slow during April through June, with notebook sales declining 15.8 percent and smartphones 30 percent during the period.

“The BCN research consists of sales data of 117 “leading digital electronic products” from 22 mass retailers.” — And, of course, none of those 22 retailers were Apple. C’mon, 9to5Mac, you should know this song by now.

      RIght.

It’s absolutely impossible for anyone to discern Apple’s sales figures for a single product line in a single country without Apple providing those figures itself. No analyst has that kind of access or insight. This report is completely fictional in every respect. I’d be surprised if Asus sold 75% of what Apple moved in the same period, regardless of their products’ selling price.

But what if the report said Apple sold more tablets? You’d be singing a different tune. The almighty superior Apple does it again.

Thirty percent drop in smartphone sales over the course of the month seems pretty significant.

This obviously means that Apple is doomed. Sell your stock, and go buy Android devices! Apple is dead.

I doubt it would be that unusual for Asus to sell more tablets than Apple. They sell very inexpensive tablets compared to Apple. The big difference is usually iPads see more online usage than most other tablets. I believe it is almost impossible for Apple’s iPad to hold greater tablet market share than Android tablets. It’s really difficult for a company to go up against companies selling tablets for around $100. I hardly think Apple is concerned about holding major market share in any category although it seems to be the most important metric for the news media and Wall Street. I’m fairly certain Apple could easily sell more iPads if they wanted to take a margin hit, but how does that really help Apple in any way. Other companies would simply reduce their prices even more even if it forces them to take losses.

The reason you don’t see $100 android tablets on line because they’re purchased for little kids to play with, not adults.

With the new iPad Air coming out I better sell my old iPad before the value of it drops. I usually search 8-13 different sites to find the best offer, but I just found this company that compares all the buyback companies in one spot, it’s called RecomHub.

It’s like Kayak but for electronic devices that show you all the offers in one spot.

Asus, running a company at less than 5% Net Profits to Gross Revenue? If Asus increased their prices to they ran the company at the same Net Profits to Gross Revenue, they wouldn’t sell as much product. Here’s a company that is desperately going for market share instead of focusing on Net Profits.
