Pixite’s new 3D photo editing app Matter debuts on iPhone and iPad

Pixite is out today with a new photo editing app for iPhone and iPad called Matter. The app allows you to embed and manipulate 3D objects in your photography or photos from others to give your photos an impressive science fiction effect. This is achieved by Matter’s ability to intelligently apply shadows and reflections that match your photography to its library of 3D objects. You can see examples of images edited in Matter above and more details about the photo editing app below…

You may be familiar with Pixite’s other photography apps for iPhone and iPad like Tangent, Fragment, and Union, and today Matter joins Pixite’s suite on the App Store.  As you can see in the images above, Matter allows you to manipulate your photos with 3D objects that look native to your photo using advanced tricks and techniques.

The app features four object packs to start which include Organic, Poly On Fire, Primitives, and Structures. These collections offer users a total of 64 different objects that can be controlled to blend natively with the existing image. Manipulating the objects with your fingers on the device is very natural, and the objects automatically look very native to your photo.

Matter also features tools for making improvements to making the object appear native including 11 object styles like reflection and translucency, 63 object color swatches as well as a color picker, masking tools to enhance object blending, and shadow tools as well.

Photos created with Matter can be shared easily and not just as still images. Objects embedded in images can animate, too, creating an even cooler effect, and these animated edits can be shared as videos. Photos can then be exported to Pixite’s other photo editing apps for iPhone and iPad, exported to Instagram for editing and sharing, or saved to your device or shared over social media.

Here’s an image of Miami that I captured and edited with Matter and Instagram:

For a more impressive example than what I made, check out this animated image shared by Matter on Instagram:

Getting started with Matter is fairly easy, too, as the app has a built-in community for ideas with scenes you can create and photographs handpicked to edit yourself in case you don’t have any worthy on your device. Using your own photography is much more fun as you create a sci-fi style scene that is sort of unbelievable.

Matter is available today for $1.99 on the App Store for iPhones and iPads with iOS 7 or later.

Gosh this is app is fun.

is there a step involved that they are not showing? How does the app know where the ground/water layer is? Is it user defined in another step? Obviously it cannot recognize the great wall, but how did it lay shadows on the water surface?

You can raise/lower the plane of the shadow to match the photo. Nifty. Also use it the move objects further back into the distance.

There needs to be an Android equivalent to this, I am missing out!

I would love to have this on my Samsung Note tablet.
