Alleged iPhone 6 housing makes another on-screen appearance, ugly antenna breaks still present (Video)

YouTuber iCrackUriDevice has published a video featuring what could be the rear housing for Apple’s upcoming 4.7-inch iPhone 6. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this part appear on video, but this is definitely the best quality video so far.

There’s no solid proof that Apple is actually manufacturing parts with this design, but the part’s design does match up with other dummy units and rumored schematics we’ve seen up to this point.

The video below showcases the design of the housing and compares it to last year’s gold iPhone 5s housing. It’s also noted that the alleged iPhone 6 housing appears to have a recessed area on the inside which could indicate that Apple has plans to use a logo inlay as we’ve seen with its current generation iPad models.

The housing shown below also features the same (ugly) antenna breaks we’ve seen on all of the mockups so far. There’s no way to tell if these parts are genuine, but the layout designed for internal components does seem pretty intricate. Alternatively, it’s possible that the housing was designed for the iPhone 6 clones that have surfaced which run a heavily skinned version of Android that’s meant to look like iOS 8.

Check out the YouTube video below (via BestTechInfo):

If this housing is legitimate, it’s obviously not a final production unit. The backside is lacking the polished “iPhone” text, and as mentioned above the Apple logo is missing. I guess we’ll find out what’s true and false in a couple of months when the iPhone 6 is officially unveiled.

  1. Meh, the bands are alright. It’s not going to effect the device’s performance hopefully.

I’m absolutely sure this is a copy part

    • boarddworld - 10 years ago

If you go to Alibaba and search: 2014 new products free government touch screen phones ,copy for apple iphone 6 touch screen digitiser. Click the first link and then scroll down. The howto reveals the insides of the copy phone an it’s very apple like.

I’m trying to look on Alibaba but I don’t see what you’re talking about… could you explain a bit more or post a link?

      • boarddworld - 10 years ago

search “2014 new products free government touch screen phones ,copy for apple iphone 6 touch screen digitiser” without quotes. It should be the first result.

What I don’t understand, and maybe someone can comment, is how the housing is a solid piece of aluminum, even with the “ugly” bands. Look at the pictures of the inside of the housing, look at the top where the wide white antenna band is mounted. So if it wraps around and the purpose of it is to be a non-conductor to separate the antenna sections, then how would that work if you can clearly see the back of the housing is one machined piece all the way to the top of the body. In other words, the plastic band is wrapping around metal that is connected to the rest of the whole thing! If it really were separating metal sections as antennas, unless i completely don’t understand this stuff, wouldn’t those separated metal sections need to be completely separated and not touching the rest of the housing? What good does that white plastic band do if it’s just sitting on top of the housing, not actually separating anything?
Now, if I’m seeing this right, and I’m not completely ignorant to the purpose of those bands in the first place, then this would have to be an elaborate fake, or some prototype first article machining piece, which is not what the final design could be.
What ya’ll think? Check the photos closely…

      • jrox16 - 10 years ago

Okay… after looking again and again, I can see that only the very top curved part might be completely separated, NOT the metal section where the camera is mounted (same on bottom too). So basically, the horizontal part of the plastic band isn’t actually separating anything along the flat back, only on the curved edges, along with the curved plastic part that wraps around the top. But they took the plastic band straight across just to add strength perhaps or for aesthetic reasons? Would look better without the horizontal band part I’d think though!

Yeah I don’t think Apple is going to release what appears like a far from finished product. If Apple actually launching this, i’m going to choke.

  3. Justin Jose Caraang - 10 years ago

I hope the bands are thinner cuz they are ugly

What a nasty, hateful, vile, absurd comment. Go find something in your life that gives you some joy, so you can get some of that toxic sludge out of your system.

  5. Pravin Bhana - 10 years ago

I Like the design this is what I was hoping for when the 5S came out.
Dosn’t worry me about the antenna.
You’ll be looking at the beautiful screen anyway.
I still have the iPhone 4! So now that a real size upgrade has arrived,
I know what I want for this year.

  6. I have a feeling that apple made these ugly prototypes for leaking purposes to trick us this time. According to WSJ the production has not yet started. Also, remember when Tim said he is doubling down on leaks. Its hard to believe this is how the new iphone will look.

  7. I’m with it! If the antenna breaks give better reception then I’ll be ok. I do hope they add another color, black and gold would look really nice IMO.

  8. R.A. (@RickTheRigged) - 10 years ago

Maybe the bands would look better if they just made them a different color. Maybe more like the actual color of the backside. If they were gold they’d sort of blend in and the entire backside would look smoother and less segmented.

  9. Andree Markefors - 10 years ago

I think these bands will be polished away after joining the components.

As it is now, they are laying on top of the actual case, but I bet they will be polished down to the surface, leaving only a very thin edge.

  10. borntofeel - 10 years ago

The bands are larger so the signal can be stronger?
The Wifi signal passes through the bands??

This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

  11. appleo - 10 years ago

If this is truly the final design, i wonder what’s John Ive doing….

  12. zomer86 - 10 years ago

Well, Tim did say he was going to double down on the leaks, but that was a long time ago and we haven’t seen any proof that he has been succesfull. I’m absolutely sure that Apple will not release the iPhone 6 with these retarded looking antenna breaks.

  13. Truffol (@Truffol) - 10 years ago

The bands might be ugly but it’s Apple’s way of doing without the two glass panels altogether. I’m sure they have gone as far as they could in terms of keeping it minimalist and all-metal (until iPhone 7 comes out of course!)

  14. Marshall Foley - 10 years ago

Not sure I understand why Apple would leave out the dual flash implemented in the iPhone 5s. Base on the appearance of the “leaked’ rear shell it’s MIA. Oh and I do hate the antenna breaks.

    • jrox16 - 10 years ago

I can’t imagine they would go backwards on the great dual LED flash in the 5S so I’ve been assuming, if these leaks are anything close to the real thing, that the single larger flash hole would contain both LEDs somehow, perhaps concentrically mounted? Or a newer LED tech which allows different temperatures of white to yellow flash to be modulated out of a single LED? I better stop, I talking crazy, haha.

  15. rogifan - 10 years ago

So basically we keep seeing the same part over and over again. So what? Doesn’t mean anything other than this part (whether it’s legit or not, whether it’s a final design or not) has leaked.

  16. They’re not antenna breaks anymore. They’re antenna windows! That’s the clever new twist, an evolution of the stripes to do a different job.

  17. Miguel del Barrio - 10 years ago

Where is the True-Tone flash on the 6th generation iPhone? This looks like false

  18. George Sopko - 10 years ago

I like the smaller screen of the iPhone and I want it to stay that way. If they do make a larger screen I hope they also offer a smaller size. Also, I’d rather have a phone that is a mm or two thicker for better battery life. They are going down a slippery slope with making them thin and bigger screen size.

    • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Nope they most certainly aren’t going down a slippery slope. How I know is that they have engineers that know what they are doing, and are some of the smartest people on the planet. What stupid people don’t understand is that Apple long ago decided on battery life until a major breakthrough in batteries occurs. The life they aim for is roughly a day of normal usage, and it does fine with that (that is if you are smart enough to know what not to do to kill your battery). Apple will continue to make them thinner a aim for the same if not better battery life, until a breakthrough in battery tech comes about. This is the smartest, and best thing to do.

  19. Yes (@AMillah) - 10 years ago

What’s the big deal with the antenna layout? Seriously, its like the same thing as the glass inlay on the iPhone 5, except its an outline instead of a filled in panel. And one of the reasons is probably due to the curved shape of the sides. And I doubt Apple would have wanted to revert back to something like the HTC One antenna, where the entire chassis is the antenna, because Apple has been doing this dual-antenna on the top and bottom edge since the 4S that gives much improved performance. Phil explained it in the 4S keynote.

The phone looks pretty damn good to me. People reacted exactly the same when the 5 design leaked with the glass inlays. Let them announce the damn phone first and I’m sure it will grow on you.

    • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

No, this looks bad, the glass inlays are elegant, these tacky bands are not. If it was between the bands being visible, or sticking with the glass inlays, they’d stick with the glass inlays. They could still easily have the glass inlays, as we’ve already seen in the best looking iPhone 6 concept. These bands will likely not be visible I think. It’s possible they will be removed in the later stages of production and liquid metal will replace them, assuming they are able to color liquid metal.

      • Yes (@AMillah) - 10 years ago

Did you just say they could still easily have the glass inlays because of an iPhone 6 concept? Holy cow….you do realize that drawing a render on a computer screen is entirely different than actually building a PHYSICAL product, right? The glass need a VERY precise/low tolerance curve around the edges in order for it to fit on the chassis and connect to the top/bottom edges with no seam. That’s not exactly trivial. Look at how the band wraps around, its placed exactly in the center of the radius. And it looks smooth and seamless, aside from the fact that its colored white.

You thinking the bands look bad is an OPINION. I think the bands look fine now after the design grew on me. Its all subjective. The rest of the design is stunning. Quit fixating on something so unbelievably trivial. This is the chassis. There’s no liquid metal (like I also believed at first), there’s no conspiracy. This is it. Get used to it. Or don’t buy it. Simple as that.

I’ve worked in sheetmetal and machine shops. I know what junk machining looks like. This is not junk machining, and certainly very sophisticated engineering. This is not some amateur fake. This is a high quality part. If you don’t believe me, come back here later this year and prove me wrong.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Huh? No, what I said was that the best looking iPhone 6 concept, had the glass, and yes, it could have them because the glass wouldn’t need to curve, it would simply be on the flat back… It has nothing to do with the concept, apart from the fact that it is currently the best looking and most realistic possibility.

Yes I think the bands look bad, and that’s my opinion, but almost everyone else who’s formed an opinion and commented on them says that they look awful. Just because you think it is trivial, doesn’t mean anyone else does. If you knew anything about Apple, you’d know that nothing is considered trivial to them, especially design. They are as meticulous as possible.

As for your comment regarding liquid metal; you have no idea. Also, your comment about a conspiracy… seriously? Haha.. what would the conspiracy be? What is fact is that Apple may have become smart enough to acknowledge the fact that there is absolutely no way to stop leaks, unless you had strictly robots doing everything. With this realization comes the only viable way to deal with leaks, and that’s to do controlled leaks, so at least you keep people guessing as to the final design. Also, this is clearly not a final production unit, as it isn’t even finished (hence the missing iPhone logo among other things). I’ll get used to the design when it is released.

      • I am new to replying, but rumors have suggested wireless charging may be included in the new iPhone, the non filled apple logo looks like it may have room for a QI charging coil ?

      • jrox16 - 10 years ago

I’ve also wondered if the machined area around the Apple logo might be enough for a charging coil. But have no idea if that would be big enough or if Apple believes in inductive charging at all. I seem to remember some rumors or maybe a patent for remote charging though (at a small distance rather than sitting on the surface)

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

No, Apple does not think that is useful at all, because it isn’t. Sitting your device on something to charge it wirelessly is virtually useless, and in fact, worse than plugging it in. You can’t use a device very effectively if it is sitting on some pad… Moreover, it likely charges the device so so much slower than wired. Apple will do wireless charging when you can use the device from a distance of several feet or at least a meter. This is when it becomes useful.

Phil Schiller specifically spoke about the fact that you still have to plug things into the wall when doing the inductive charging and it’s more complicated than just plugging something directly into the device. He didn’t mention what I just spoke about, but these are all reasons that is a really stupid gimmick. You need to be able to hold the device and use it normally from a distance of at least a meter.
