Apple adds 3D Yosemite Flyover to Maps ahead of new OS X

Yosemite Flyover

Apple has steadily been adding new cities and locations with support for its 3D Flyover feature to its Maps app this year. The latest Flyover addition to Apple Maps includes support for two new locations: Wellington, New Zealand and Yosemite National Park, California. The addition of Wellington marks the third location in New Zealand to support Flyover with Auckland and Christchurch both previously being supported. Newly added 3D Flyover support for Yosemite National Park in California is especially notable though as Apple prepares to ship its redesigned Mac operating system named after the national park

With the release of Developer Preview 6 of OS X 10.10 Yosemite yesterday, Apple added a new set of system wallpapers with various shots around Yosemite National Park further pushing the visual of the venue. Below you can see newly added Wellington, New Zealand in Flyover as well.

Flyover is a cool feature and this is a nice addition – that being said, I’d love to see some more practical uses for it.

Why is Vienna still not supported?
The city has almost 2 million inhabitant, is meant to be (and actually) one of the most beautiful cities in the world and host city of 2015’s Eurovision Song Contest
We have no Apple Store as well :(( (although Vienna is way bigger than e.g. Munich, Cologne, Barcelona, Amsterdam,….

Does anyone actually give a crap about this “flyover” stuff? It seems to me this is a classic sort of “feature that no one actually asked for” thing, and one that has nothing to do with the actual utility of the maps product.

Why not get the Maps actually working and accurate before they start spending resources on this crap? Even once done, it’s still not actually useful for anything like Google street view or the “virtual trips” that you can put together with it.

This whole thing just screams of a “me too” useless add-on that “competes” with Google’s street trips.

It’s probably the case that there is a separate team working on flyover from the core team working to improve Apple maps (which have improved tremendously over the past 2 years, and even Google maps has errors contrary to popular belief).
So if a separate team is working on a feature which, and you’re right, is just for show and fun, who cares? It’s not as if Apple doesn’t have enough money to employ those additional resources. Don’t think that because Flyover is growing that core Maps accuracy isn’t improving just the same. Lots of money, multiple teams, everyone working at the same time.

I agree. These are the kinds of things that may impress your grandparents but the detail is usually so lousy as to render them useless.

Thanks for telling us that Maps has improved. Otherwise, no one would have seen any improvements.

Jrox, do you work for Apple?

I’ll have to agree with the critics; Apple, don’t spend more resources on the Flyover gimmick until you’ve fixed the basic functionality of Maps. As long as you can’t depend on Maps’ navigation to reliably get you from location A to B every time, don’t waste time on the gee-wizz stuff. Getting the route right 50% of the time, or even 75% of the time, just isn’t good enough.

Cool. Love Flyover for quickly learning new cities.

Also like Google’s Streetview for getting more detail on specific areas.

Both good Both useful. Hopefully more places keep coming.
