3D renderings compare Samsung’s iPhone-like Galaxy Alpha to the real deal

Earlier this month Samsung announced yet another Android handset dubbed the Galaxy Alpha that many observers noted borrows design cues from the iPhone 5 first introduced by Apple nearly 2 years ago. The Galaxy Alpha does feature a metal frame with chamfered edges, but does it really favor the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s or is it more Samsung than anything else?

Designer Martin Hajek has created a new collection of 3D renderings to help visualize that comparison and answer that question showing Samsung’s Galaxy Alpha handset side-by-side with Apple’s iPhone 5s.

Hajek goes one step further and compares the Samsung Galaxy Alpha to a 3D rendering of the iPhone 6 based on part leaks we’ve seen this year.

As you can see, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha starts to resemble the iPhone a bit less with the new model created based on component leaks as the squared edges begin to round off, and the larger display of the expected new iPhone model of course takes cues from the large market of Android handsets with bigger screens.

The verdict? I think Samsung may have admired the iPhone 5 casing a little with the Galaxy Alpha design, but it’s still clear which device comes from which company without question.

  1. Alpha looks terrible.

As someone who is not an avid supporter of neither samsung or apple, I think that you are talking crap my friend. The samsung looks much better with its larger screen and thinner design

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

The larger screen and thinner bezels look better, but the rest of it is awful design. Specifically the gold front and the corners? They did the corners thing just so it would be slightly different.

Looks better than the iPhone 6!

      • tigerpork - 10 years ago

        for you to poop on!

      • boarddworld - 10 years ago

Sure, if yo have no conception of design and form…

    • rettun1 - 10 years ago

I was drawn to it at first, because it was a “smaller” phone (that isn’t small enough, imo.) The 720p screen is a bummer, and this thing is running hardware that’s gonna get smoked by the iPhone when it comes out. Also a very timely release for a 4.7 inch phone

Hey, Samsung, stop beating around the bush and just make the 100% copy of the iPhone already!

    • boarddworld - 10 years ago

I actually think it looks more like a Galaxy inside a slimmed down iPhone Vapor case which have been around for the last 4 years. It’s nice that they can enjoy at least a little bit of metal after all these years.

It definitely hints at the iPhone design, which is not entirely surprising. Samsung typically tries to imitate the current trends, rather than create their own. But, it’s not close enough to sue over or anything. I don’t think they look enough alike that it would cause any user confusion.

Look at a Nokia Lumia, HTC One M8 or a any Sony phone, they all have their own ascetics that look nothing like an iPhone, but the worlds biggest vendor of smartphones can’t design a single phone without having the iPhone as a reference, it’s ridiculous, they should copy the camera design too, because Samsung cameras always look awful!

    • Taste_of_Apple - 10 years ago

      You’re spot on!

    • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Yep, and the new sharp crystal phone. They all look different, but Samsung copies hard. I love how they copied and released a gold phone after Apple. If anyone thinks that isn’t copying then I just feel bad for them.

    • Cun Con - 10 years ago

Look at the diamond cut of that Galaxy metal frame and compare it to iPhone: lol. They could’ve made it round, but they decided to have “iPhone-like” cut.

    • Exactly! It is really sad that they keep doing this. They claim to be #1 but they keep copying their greatest competitor. Copying your competitor just screams “pathetic”. They know everyone loves the iPhone and they want a piece of it. Samscum has been doing this crap for years now.

Having used both phones (and not just looked at pictures of both) I can state the Samsung S5 is better than any iphone I have used.
    It’s not even close.

  6. Lee Palisoc (@leepalisoc) - 10 years ago

I’m really hoping that’s the final design of the iPhone 6.

  7. Gregory Wright - 10 years ago

Guys I think Sammy had the larger phone first. Would it not be the iPhone 6 looks closer to Alpha than the other way around. Just saying…………..

    • herb02135go - 10 years ago

      Apple is again copying Samsung.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Samsung copied Apple from the beginning lest you forget. :)

    • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

A LARGER DISPLAY ISNT A DESIGN ASPECT. Omg people are so dumb. Display size can’t be seen as copying because it’s just display size. You choose whatever display size you think works at the time or is best. Apple could have gone with a larger screen long ago, but they also didn’t want to make trade offs in display quality. They take their time and get it right before slaughtering it.

However, if you are stupid enough to want to say they’re copying the screen size, look no further than when Samsung copied the original iPhone and started making big screens with just touch as opposed to a tiny screen with buttons under it. Congrats on the idiotic comments though.

    • Clint (@Claustin26) - 10 years ago

It doesn’t look like the iPhone 6, it looks like the 5 and 5s, just bigger and more (too much) gold.

  8. Daniel Ziegler (@zieglid) - 10 years ago

My prediction for Samsung S6: rounded frame!

    • herb02135go - 10 years ago

Daniel- I’m looking at my S5 right now. It has a rounded frame.

Larger screen and I haven’t charged it since Tuesday morning.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

You haven’t charged it since Tuesday because all you do is get on this Apple website. It’s honestly the most embarrassing thing ever. You’re so upset that Apple destroys samsung that you have to get on an Apple website everyday and see what they have in store that will put samsung to shame next. It’s really really sad. I bet there are people working at Apple that read your comments and laugh hysterically.

Other than a little too much gold on the face and back, it looks pretty good IMO, which shouldn’t be a surprise because Apple designed it. “We’ll make the whole thing gold and put the antenna bands on the top and bottom instead of the sides and nobody will know! It’s foolproof!” ~Samsung design team

Honestly though if I wanted an Android phone, which I don’t because Android is a steaming pile of crap (last time I tried it was the HTC One. A recent-ish flagship phone, for reference), I’d sport this thing in a different color.

  10. Cun Con - 10 years ago

iPhone has antenna bands on the side, Galaxy has them on the top frame. You can’t say that Samsung copy…no..and champagne color too…everyone use “gold” tone color.

    • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

No not everyone does haha. Show me them using it before Apple, please. Also you’re focusing on the antenna bands and conveniently ignoring the blatantly copied beveled edges, and rounded corners.

  11. rlowhit - 10 years ago

At this point there is enough information about Apple Samsung lawsuits and what it is about for each individual to formulate their own opinions on how Samsung and Apple operates.

  12. Poor Samsung!!! They don’t know what is the meaning of “own ideas”

  13. Mike Knopp (@mknopp) - 10 years ago

What amazes me is that there are this many comments regarding the design aspects of a phone that hasn’t been released with a phone that hasn’t been announced.

  14. Dria Yassine - 10 years ago

i hate the lines on the iphone, it’s got nothing with they’r principles of minimalism… maybe it’s practical for the antennas but its making it look awful

  15. Raudy De Leon - 10 years ago

so samsung is now copying case companies? looks way to similar to this case for the iphone 4/4s from element case. http://nothingbutiphonecases.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Silver-on-Silver-Vapor-4-Case.jpg
