Macotakara: 4.7-inch iPhone called ‘iPhone 6’, 5.5-inch model ‘iPhone 6 Plus’

While we seem to know all about the features in the new iPhone and the new design, something still left up in the Air are the names of the new phones. While some have long-referred to the new devices as the “iPhone 6” or the “iPhone Air,” no outright claims have been made about the names until a new report today. According to Macotakara, the 4.7-inch model will be known as “iPhone 6” while the 5.5-inch version will be called the “iPhone 6 Plus.” Apple has not used the “Plus” suffix for a product since the “Mac Plus“, so that would be a first for an iOS device. iLounge first presented the Plus name as a possibility in January 2013. This naming convention does not seem incredibly likely, but Macotakara did indeed accurately predict the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c names last fall. Leaning toward iPhone 6 being at least one of the two names is that the camera data shared by the “reviewer” of leaked 4.7-inch iPhone 6 hardware refers to the device as the iPhone 6.

  1. I say get rid of the numbering scheme. Have;

    iPhone C (4″ with color)
    iPhone (4.7″)
    iPhone Plus (5.5″)

    • lagax - 10 years ago

Sure, and loose half of your custumers…

      • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

Because that’s logically what would happen…

      • jhulgan - 10 years ago

        Explain?

  2. I think I like 6L better but Plus is fine… although kinda awkward to say after iPhone 6 since it sounds like Samsung product names.

  3. SteveZ (@nerdAFK) - 10 years ago

If it is true, I think they would go with the “+” symbol.
    This year, “iPhone 6+”
    Next year, “iPhone 6s+”

  4. Mike Wëwerka - 10 years ago

Why not call the smaller, lighter iPhone 6 (i.e. the 4.7-inch) the iPhone Air and call the larger 5.5-inch model, the iPhone Pro? Seems completely legit and logical to me.

    • Tim Jr. - 10 years ago

Totally agree… and the 4″ line, which they would keep for entry level as the iPhone Classic.. or Just iPhone

      iPhone Classic (4″)
      iPhone Air (4.7″)
      iPhone Pro (5.5″)

That follow’s the logic of all their other product lines.. Why do this and confuse the general consumers.. I can hear they questions and confusion now from normal every day customers..

      • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

It does not follow the logic of the product lines at all. Not even a little bit.

      • Tim Jr. - 10 years ago

This new ‘naming scheme’ reminds me when they did the 3rd iPad as.. New iPad as the name.. was dumb ..

They seemed to have gotten the iPad’s in line.. iPad Mini, iPad Air… Next the 12.9″ would be the iPad Pro.. it just makes sense… why this nutty naming scheme.. maybe Tim making his mark? donna..

I always like Apple’s simplistic naming.. made they stand out from other like Samsung, LG, etc with the plethora of products and dumb alpha/numeric naming scheme…

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

@Tim iPad Pro makes sense because only professionals would purchase a 12.9″ iPad. A huge number of consumers will purchase the 5.5″ iPhone, thus ‘Pro’ makes absolutely no sense.

    • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

      It does?

Can you explain to me what makes a larger screen “Pro”?

Before you answer, keep in mind the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro both have 13″ sizes, however vastly different internal hardware.

These two iPhones are likely to have identical internal hardware, such as the A8, the camera, etc.

      • Tim Jr. - 10 years ago

Easy.. weight.. Remember too, the Macbook Pro doesn’t go down to 11″.. the 13″ is just the man in the middle size.. and the Air doesn’t goto the 15″

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

@Tim do you even realize the ‘Pro’ is supposed to mean that it’s aimed at professionals? Granted the MacBook Pro pretty much just transformed into something everyone bought anyway, but that’s not really relevant.

      • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

        @Tim

No. I’m sorry. But no. You couldn’t make less sense if you tried.

    • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

That’s not logical at all to me. First of all both iPhones are getting larger and heavier. What do you think of when you think of Air? iPad Air made sense since the device was physically smaller in every dimension and lighter. iPhone Air makes no sense. If they made a 4″ version, that would make sense to call it the iPhone Air. Not the 4.7″ or 5.5″.

Secondly iPhone Pro makes even less sense. No iPhone is aimed at professionals, and they never will be. They’re aimed at consumers whether they be professionals or people that just get on Facebook. The iPhones will always have as good specs as Apple can accomplish or decides to include. The 5.5″ may have a few better features but that’s due to the increased volume for which to include these other features.

Lastly iPhone Plus sounds lame and confusing to the customer in my opinion. Like what’s the person that wants a 4.7″ phone think when they see that the 5.5″ says ‘Plus’? It is confusing, and likely alienating/infuriating to customers that don’t want a 5.5″ phone. Same can be said about ‘Pro’ just doesn’t make sense at all. If there were a ‘Plus’ version then there should be ‘Plus’ versions of the 4″ and 4.7″ too, and also regular lower spec versions at a cheaper price.

I think the best sounding, least confusing, and most logical naming would simply be:
      iPhone 5S
      iPhone 6
      iPhone 6L

    • jonp1002014 - 10 years ago

Pro is used because it’s short for professional. The Macbook Pros were designed for professionals. There’s nothing particularly professional about a larger screen.

      • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

Or a phone in general. Apple would never market its leading consumer product as a Pro device. Couldn’t make less if you tried.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Exactly what I’ve been telling these people

      • herb02135go - 10 years ago

Wrong. It’s called Pro because Apple is trying to entice consumers into thinking that’s what they are IF they buy this.

Companies don’t market to what their audience is, they market to what their customers want to be.

Hence beer commercials show guys with pretty girls. Not guys in their Boxers watching ESPN.

  5. SteveZ (@nerdAFK) - 10 years ago

    “EXIF data”???????

    Where does dat come from???

  6. jedimindtrick99 - 10 years ago

Great news and all but I will wait for Apple to tell me the truth tomm

  7. edgong - 10 years ago

So will the 5.5 inch one be known as the I PP?😉

  8. PMZanetti - 10 years ago

    iPhone 6c
    iPhone 6
    iPhone 6+

    • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

There is no 6C there haven’t been any leaks or rumors at all to suggest a plastic, colored phone

      • I’m assuming, and I may be wrong, but the 6c could be the iPhone 5c but with the iPhone 5s internals and TouchID.

      • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

As Shameer suggests, I’m 100% certain there will be a new edition of the 5c, with upgraded internals from the 5s. They will call it the 6c, because its fits the naming of the rest of the “new” iPhone line, and to distinguish it from last years (they’re not just gonna keep calling it the 5c).

      • Bruno Fernandes (@Linkb8) - 10 years ago

You can’t create a 6c using last year’s tech. So the options are take the 5S in a plastic case and call it 5C – but then you have old or new 5C. Or call it – ready for it? 5CS. Or 5SC.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Yes that is certainly a possibility, but I think they might just stick with the 5S and not make a C this round. That, or 5C $0.00 5S $99 6 $199 6L or 6+ $299

    • Bruno Fernandes (@Linkb8) - 10 years ago

Wrong year for that cycle. You should know that lower models will only share the name of the top model when we’re in an “S” year. So that would be next year, 2015 for a 6C and a 6S. Expect a 5-something at the low end this year.

  9. taoprophet420 - 10 years ago

I say 6+ because of the original iPhone math rumor and cheaper to do + then plush.

I would went with Air name because it’s familiar to customers.

  10. devanealex - 10 years ago

It would surely make sense to call the 4.7inch iPhone, the iPhone Air and the larger one, the iPhone Pro. Perhaps rename the iPhone 5s or 5c the iPhone mini.
When Apple make a 12inch iPad they’ll call it the iPad Pro. Therefore the Mac, MacBook, iPad and iPhone product lines follow the same naming scheme.

  11. Michael Garnett (@_jorts) - 10 years ago

I want the 5.5″ but I’m actually hoping it’s delayed a bit. If the supplies are constrained at all it’s going to be next to impossible to find one of these in the configuration you want on launch day. If it’s delayed a few weeks some of the hooplah would have died down.

  12. David Buchanan - 10 years ago

They can just call both models the “iPhone 6.”
Then add the screen size at the end, much like with the Macbook line ups.

    • Bruno Fernandes (@Linkb8) - 10 years ago

That makes too much sense. How can you possible write something in the comment section of a blog that actually makes sense? You’re going to completely upset the balance of nature.

  13. Wendell berry (@wb40382) - 10 years ago

Excuse me folks! This is what’s going to happen. iPhone 4.7 will be called iPhone Air and 5.5 inch will be iPhone Pro. Just like the stage has been set for iPad mini, iPad Air, and iPad Pro which is due early next year. Apple is getting away from numbers attached to models. It just makes sense.

  14. standardpull - 10 years ago

I’d rather them wait until there are plenty on the shelves. Releasing it earlier will just make it so popular that no one will be able to buy one.

  15. dridots - 10 years ago

Maybe it should be called 6 and a quarter inch!

  16. Bruno Fernandes (@Linkb8) - 10 years ago

I have an idea. How about just calling both models the iPhone 6? Mind-blowing I know. I know there’s no precedent (Macbook multiple size, Macbook Pro multiple size, PowerBook multiple sizes, iMac multiple sizes, etc..) but how refreshing would it be for such a drastic change in naming schemes from Apple?

  17. Erwin Net - 10 years ago

I think Apple will stick to the simplicity it has had so far: Once every two years new iPhone with just a number! iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPhone 6…. Every other year add variants like 5s, 5c, 6s, 6c… Screen size will be mentioned aside iPhone 6 (4.7 inch) and iPhone 6 (5.5 inch)
