Verizon offers two-month early upgrades alongside iPhone 6 launch starting today

To go along with the launch of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, Verizon is allowing early upgrades for any customers eligible for an upgrade over the next two months. That means that customers eligible for an upgrade on or before November 15 2014 will be able to upgrade immediately to a new device, including the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Here’s details on the promo straight from Verizon:

As a special thank you to our existing customers, all Verizon customers who would be eligible to upgrade on or before November 15th have had their upgrade dates changed to become upgrade eligible immediately.  These customers can now upgrade to any device currently in our lineup, with new two year contract. Customers should check My Verizon to confirm upgrade eligibility.

Other carriers have done similar limited time upgrade offers to accompany new iPhone launches and encourage users to upgrade/purchase the new device. AT&T typically offers early upgrades to customers within a month of being eligible to upgrade. This year we so far only have confirmation from Verizon on early upgrades, and other carriers seem to be more focused on pushing users to switch to one of their new upgrade programs like AT&T Next and T-Mobile’s JUMP.

Earlier today Apple announced a record 4 million preorders for the new iPhones during its first 24 hours. AT&T previously said it set record-breaking sales numbers during the first night of preorders, but we’ve yet to hear from other carriers.

We’ve reached out to Sprint and AT&T to see if they are offering a similar early upgrade offer to customers for the iPhone 6 launch, but didn’t immediately hear back.

Update: Sprint told us the following: “We encourage Sprint customers to call Customer Care with upgrade questions – we allow most customers who have had their current device for at least 6 months to upgrade early on Easy Pay or Lease.”

Nice Verizon. Offer a 2 month early upgrade, when the phone is backordered 2 months. I see what you did there.

    • Arthur Hawgood - 10 years ago

The phone is not backordered two months except for preorders. You can wait in line on launch day. There will be phones then.

  2. Wait, so if you are eligible for an upgrade on, say, November 16, you do not qualify for the early upgrade? But November 15 and you do?

    • chrisl84 - 10 years ago

Thats correct, eventually all promotions have a cut off point.

    • Joseph DiPierno - 10 years ago

Yeah I am in the same boat. I am eligible a week after this promotion…

    • Yes, this is how time works.

      • Arthur Hawgood - 10 years ago

WTF kind of troll comment is that? The company is offering 2 month promotional upgrades. I was 1 day off and they changed it for me. The reason VZW is doing it is for customer satisfaction. I can’t believe there are so many people like you who are happy to apologize for Verzion or other huge companies. What’s it to them to offer someone a 1-week early upgrade.

    • Todd McLannister - 10 years ago

I’m in the same boat, the 23rd

    • No. My upgrade was on February 1 and I will get my iPhone 6 pro on October 15. 2 months early + 1 month additionally if you pay on time.

    • Arthur Hawgood - 10 years ago

I had an 11/16/14 upgrade. I called Verizon and made a stink. They changed it. YRMV but It’s worth a shot.

      • jojodevils223 - 10 years ago

How did you do that. I have been trying. What do I say. I have November 16 also

  3. MGhostSoft - 10 years ago

AT&T changed the upgrade period from 18 months to 24 months about two years ago. That just sucks because the on-sale date of iPhone is usually 1~2 days earlier every year (because it’s always Friday). AT&T just want to promote its Next aggressively. I would appreciate if they could change it to 23 months.

I upgraded to the iPhone 5 on launch day in 2012 (September 21) and was eligible to upgrade to the iPhone 6 on launch day this year.

      • versaceboy54 - 10 years ago

As did I but was only offered 200.00 off the full price if I ordered on the sept.21. I don’t qualify for the 199.99 price untill sept 21. 2015

    • iSRS - 10 years ago

Actually, it is later. I am on Verizon. I got a launch day iPhone 5. My contract date was 9/18/2014.

However, on 9/1, both my lines (My wife’s contract date was 9/8/2014) were eligible for a discount, saving me from needing to call to switch mine with her’s to preorder.

Nice, I bought mine on the edge plan bc I wasn’t eligible until Dec. Way to go Verizon.

No wonder the phone is selling well, with such sweeteners and stores giving it away.

I wonder how it would do if people had to pay for it?

    • rettun1 - 10 years ago

Not quite giving it away. When carriers offered 2 galaxy s5’s for the price of one, THAT was giving it away. And that was right after launch. No wonder android has a bigger marketshare, all they care about is shipping more phones

      • herb02135go - 10 years ago

        Check the Internet.
Marketwatch has a story on how to get it free.

It’s not hard to find a good deal.

Samsung’s deal was good, too. You should have tried it out. You’d have more features than waiting for the 6.

Great battery life, multi-tasking, and other great features. Better display, better camera, etc.
        Plus it’s lighter.
The S5 is an outstanding phone (coming from someone who owned Iphones 1 through 5)

    • Brian Ramage (@BJMRamage) - 10 years ago

woah…stores are giving it away? sweeteners? this is just extending a timeframe to buy a desired phone. no cheapening to get it.

I should have found these stores.

      • herb02135go - 10 years ago

In the business they call it a sweetener.
If it works for you, congratulations.

    • yup, that’s why over 10 million iphone 6 and 6+ have been sold, troll, the sweeteners. GO AWAY

  6. I’m happy for this but at the same time annoyed. I called into VZW customer care the day before pre-orders began asking if they could change my upgrade date to that day instead of Oct. 8th and they absolutely refused. Now after the phone is back ordered 4 weeks (iPhone 6 Plus) I’m now suddenly upgrade eligible. Looks like no matter what I’m now looking at a early to mid-October upgrade (which means I’ll now face this same issue for the iPhone 7). If they planned on doing this, why not just offer it up before pre-orders began? I guess they didn’t want even more people overloading the systems on the 12th. :-/

    People!
If you are in the final months of your contract and you don’t like what’s going on, call your carrier. Ask for the Retention Dept. They may be able 5 cut you a deal.

    Threaten to terminate early.
I cut my last three phone bills in half by doing that.

  8. Frank Novak - 10 years ago

Well that sucks.. Says Nov 15 on here and when I looked at my upgrade date it says Nov. 18..

  9. tjarboe522 - 10 years ago

I have been fighting with verizon for 1 1/2 yrs now over no/poor connections in my area. Can’t wait to get back to AT&T.

  10. With less than 20 days until my 2 year mark, AT&T will not let me upgrade and said they will charge me $95 if I cancel my service before October 4th. I will probably drop them as my carrier and I will probably switch carriers on the 30+ phones we have on AT&T at work. For now I will wait.

  11. Miggs (@MiggsTN) - 10 years ago

I’m with AT&T and anticipating the mad rush for the new iPhones, I called them a few days before the pre-order date to see if I can pre-order my wife’s line which has a contract end date of 10/3/14 just because of the availability issues she had when she ordered the iPhone 5 two years ago. I was told that she would be unable to pre-order but they would let me upgrade early only on 9/19 – the official release date of the iPhone 6- and with only them. Meaning, I can’t go to the Apple store and line up on release day to get one and not even at an AT&T store to make matters worse. I’m only allowed to order through the phone with AT&T customer service and I’d be lucky if I can get one in a month the way things are going with the pre-orders. Ahh yes, corporate greed at it’s finest. Thanks Ma Bell! Seven years with you guys and all I kept hearing is the AT&T Next program! NICE!

    • Thuan M. Nguyen - 10 years ago

Hi I was wonder if you can share with me how did you able to get them to let you update on the 9/19. I been on the phone three times and they will not let me update to 2 weeks earlier. My contract is up on 10/3 not matter what I tried they wouldn’t do anything about it. Thanks

  12. jamiefind - 10 years ago

FYI, this early upgrade offer is only available through Verizon itself. I called and confirmed. The Apple eligibility checker will not recognize anything earlier than your original eligibility date. To order early, you have to go through Verizon.

  13. Ashleigh Turner Cole - 10 years ago

does this apply to business account too? i logged in and the upgrade date still says October 2nd?!

  14. huntersgirl23 - 10 years ago

My upgrade with Verizon wasn’t until December 18th and they let me upgrade early with no questions asked.. And she actually told me that as long as you were eligible for an upgrade before feb. 2015 they would let you upgrade…( not sure how true that is after reading post here but that’s what I was told)
