Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus gets put through ‘bend test’ in new video

bend-test

With recent reports of the iPhone 6 Plus suffering from a bendable body while in pockets and other tight places, YouTuber Lewis from Unbox Therapy decided to put together a proper “bend test” and see what all of the fuss is about. Obviously this is going to be an extreme situation, but as others have specified it doesn’t take much to bend Apple’s new phablet…

In the video below, Lew puts the iPhone 6 Plus through a forced bend session. The bend test is done completely by hand, but as he points out, a bit of bending had happened to his iPhone 6 Plus prior to the force test. There was a slight indent near the center just below the volume buttons, which he thinks may be the device’s weakest point.

Check out the iPhone 6 Plus bend test video below:

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znK652H6yQM]

As you would imagine, doing this kind of test on an iPhone is going to leave it completely bend out of shape. The iPhone 6 Plus was still functional afterwards, but Lewis also informed us that he cracked the display a bit while attempting to bend the body back to normal after shooting the above video.

Screen cracked after attempting to bend it back.

Either way, I think we’ve clearly determined that Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus is not meant to be bent. Just as a reminder, most phones aren’t meant to go through this type of torture, but then again, they should bend by simply being inside of your pocket. This is likely due to the thin aluminum design, but apparently Apple isn’t stepping up to the plate just yet. Some people have mentioned that Apple is not willing to replace the bent 6 Plus models free of charge.

Most other phones have some sort of flex to them, but those “other phones” are also made out of plastic and won’t become permanently damaged. Let’s be honest here, this is a thin device that’s made out of aluminum. While I don’t think it should just bend inside of a pocket, I’m not shocked by the results from the forced bend test video.

I guess we’ll call this one “bendgate.”

I’ve come around on this one. It’s definitely a feature. Over time the phone will conform to the shape of your favorite place to keep it, whether that be back pocket, left-check, or front pocket right-thigh. It’ll be so comfortable in that position that it’ll feel like it was born there.

  2. PMZanetti - 10 years ago

    This is not good.

dumbest thing I’ve seen all day. and that dude shoulda got a manicure or put some lotion on those hands

  4. OneOkami (@OneOkami) - 10 years ago

Kudos to him for sacrificing his phone. Unfortunately I guess this is what you get when your phone is thin and made of aluminum. In this respect, I’m glad I have 6 and not a 6 plus as I’d imagine the smaller profile in my pocket makes this less likely to happen to mine.

I guess one this to consider is getting a hard case for your phone which itself will bend easily and thus protect your phone from bending.

    • OneOkami (@OneOkami) - 10 years ago

Correction: A hard case which itself will NOT bend easily (if at all), I mean.

    • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

In what perception of physics do you arrive at the idea that plastic, silicon, or leather is somehow less flexible than aluminum?

If this happens to my 6 Plus, I will insist Apple replace it. Clearly there is a weak point in the body of the device.

      • Mr. Grey (@mister_grey) - 10 years ago

Nonsense. You seem to just automatically take the “con” position to whatever anyone says regardless of it having (or not having) any actual merit.

By the same argument a 20 tonne steel beam has a “weak point” in the middle, because putting enough pressure on it will bend that too. Everything has a “weak point” in the same way as this phone does. Everything.

The question is only whether using the phone in a normal, reasonable way will make it bend.

        The answer is … no.

      • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

Mr. Grey….i Would love to believe that….but that this moment, I don’t. I give Apple the benefit of the doubt over forum whiners any day of the week…..but this one is not looking good for Apple.

      • OneOkami (@OneOkami) - 10 years ago

Are you kidding me? Why don’t you stop and think for a moment before jumping on people with your perpetual rude attitude. I’ll flip the concept back on you, in what perception of physics do you arrive at the idea that thick, rugged, solid material can’t be less flexible than a thin layer of aluminum?

Here’s an analogy for you. Go try bending a solid piece of oak and then try bending a piece of aluminum foil and see which one is more flexible.

Goodness man, Do me a favor and just don’t bother replying to me anymore. No matter how inferior my intelligence is to yours.

      • jrox16 - 10 years ago

Did you see his hands shaking from the strain? He applied a pretty good deal of force. So at what point do we say, “yes, this is a device and it can be destroyed”?? Has anyone ever done a test like this to an Android phone before? If you sit on your phone, which the complainers absolutely did and are now lying about it, it’s going to bend unless it’s a thicker bulkier phone. So you can’t have it both ways, this is so absurd. Consumers are so amazingly spoiled and irrational. You can’t have a very thin phone AND have it be unbendable. Even if the iPhone 6 Plus were made of titanium, at some point, someone would apply enough pressure to bend it. And it would cost a fortune. The only answer is to make the phone thicker. But then everyone would complain that it was so thick, you know they would. Thick and heavy, why Apple, how could Jony Ive make such a thick heavy phone, LOL! That’s what everyone would cry about.
        Children…

      • davidmchenry - 10 years ago

I’m pretty sure putting your phone in your front pocket and sitting/standing/walking/jogging will fall under normal use.

My iPhone 5s doesn’t bend under those conditions. and amazingly neither does anyone’s Galaxy/Note devices which are equally as large. So to give a free pass just because it’s apple and just because they chose aluminium as their construction material really doesn’t fly.

Is this going to be a widespread problem? Who knows. But it can turn in to another antenagate real quick if more and more users start to report this as they get their iPhone 6+. remember, not a lot of users have this phone yet compared to the 6. (According to this very site anyway)

      • ldAbl (@YiiildAbliiiY) - 10 years ago

Check out UnboxTherapy’s follow up, he tried to bend the Note 3 with more force, and it wouldn’t stay bent.

      • Chris Sanders - 10 years ago

@jrox16 Then they would claim Steve Jobs would never…

      • Duncan Hill - 10 years ago

It’s not that the other materials are less flexible, it is that metal does not bend back as easily as plastic, silicon and leather. If apple made their phones out of plastic, then this would not be (as much of) a problem.

      • originaldub - 10 years ago

Mr. Grey you said ” The question is only whether using the phone in a normal, reasonable way will make it bend. The answer is … no.”

Is putting a phone in your front pocket not considered normal use? I doubt most of the people who bent their phones were doing anything different than they normally did before.

      • @davidmchenry I believe the i6 Plus is bigger than the Note 3. The Plus is more comparable to the LG Flex in my opinion…as far as size goes.

When I saw the video of the guy bending the phone, it looked like he was straining mighty hard to me…so much, that he was shaking.

I think people is making a big deal out of nothing. Everyone knows Aluminum bends. So why put something this huge in your back pocket, only to have a little under half of it fit inside the pocket anyway…with the rest sticking out of the pocket. Then you go sit down…what do people expect to happen.

Then people walk around in skin tight jeans and somehow manage to fit this phone in the front pocket of those and expect it not to bend over time…smh

When something looks great and is selling great, people will always try andfind something negative about it. I’m sure when the Moto X and Note 4 starts to get in people hands, I’m sure people will find something negative about them as well and blow it out of proportion.

    • giskardian - 10 years ago

@jrox16: I sit on my 4S fairly regularly, and it is not bent. Obviously a device as large as the 6+ isn’t going to be so indestructable without being impractically heavy, but a $900 device meant to be taken everywhere the user goes does need to be durable. If Apple had made it out of steel or thicker aluminum and used a curved back, rigidity would be good, it would be easier to hold, and it could house a larger battery.

We’ll see how many bending reports show up, but at this point all signs indicate the 6+ body/chassis is poorly designed and needed more input from engineers rather than stylists like Ive.

      • Charles-Antoine Marcotte - 10 years ago

I’m sorry… but who dares to sit on a 900$ device as you like to call it? I understand it is meant to be durable, but a phone is not a chair (I swear). If you are using it in a correct manner, you will have no problem at all..

Again… explain to all of the community why you would sit on a 5.5 IN PHONE?!

      • standardpull - 10 years ago

Please show us how much ch force it takes to bend it.

      • giskardian - 10 years ago

Most of the bent 6+ reports are from people who had them in FRONT pockets. They did not “sit on” them.

Secondly, most people I know carry their iPhones in a pocket, often a pants pocket. They try not to sit on the phone but mistakes happen. Usually a person will begin to sit down, feel the phone, and do a funny dance to keep from plopping their butt onto it. Or if they own a 4S, they don’t worry because steel and glass make for a durable phone.

I can understand expecting a cheap phone to be fragile, but I don’t see how anyone could expect the most expensive phone on the market to be so delicate.

  5. PDXartist (@illustrate) - 10 years ago

Duh… Smartphones don’t go in your front or back pocket.

    • Max Mars (@devianter) - 10 years ago

where the fuck are you supposed to put them? in your purse? i don’t have one, sorry.

      • paulywalnuts23 - 10 years ago

Then don’t get a 5.5 inch phone… You know how silly a 5.5 inch phone looks in ones front pocket.

      • your totally right where else do you put your phone, i have a 6+ and it was in my front pocket wearing jeans up until yesterday when i heard this now I’m putting it in my jacket pocket but the is a huge inconvenience for me.

I’ve always used my front jeans pocket to put my phone in, but this is madness that a phone can bend in your front jeans pocket, yes in your back pocket your asking for trouble if you sit down on it of course.

    • Willie Rosario (@wchoreo) - 10 years ago

Duh…What planet have you been in where phones are not placed in a pocket?! Please you sound silly!

    • Bill (@AllAboutSillyTV) - 10 years ago

PDXartist puts his phone right down his underwear, where there’s plenty of room and give. Am I right, PDXartist?

  6. Ever since people revealed that you may accidentally bend your iphone 6, especially the plus, I have been so worried that my beloved 6 plus will be bent out of shape… I hope apple could come up with a solution. It is ridiculous to be told again where to put your phone just as the time when iphone 4 was out, how to hold your phone…

  7. I think you mean to say “they shouldn’t bend by simply being inside of your pocket”.

  8. chrisl84 - 10 years ago

The 5.5 inch iPhone 7 arriving at 4.5mm thick will bend from a strong breeze.

    • 89p13 - 10 years ago

The 5.5″ iPhone 7 will be milled from a solid, one-piece block of steel – it will be durable but will also weight 12 ounces. Battery life will be 12 days.

Bend this one – not unless you’re Superman.

Oh, and the antenna will be one of those external stubby antennas from the mid 2000’s design.

  9. Shahab 21 (@Shahab_21) - 10 years ago

Apply some physics and it is totally reasonable that the thinest phablet made of aluminum would bend. If it was even as thick as iPhone 5S but with same screen size then it wouldn’t have happened. Now which would you choose, a thin phone that might bend if you torture it like that or a thick one that doesn’t?

    • rogifan - 10 years ago

I’ll take the thin phone as I dont tortrue my phones (and I’m guessing 99.99999% of consumers don’t).

      • Edison Wrzosek - 10 years ago

Then you would be wrong, because the majority of consumers are klutzes that drop, smash, submerse, and otherwise “abuse” their phones…

      • Max Mars (@devianter) - 10 years ago

        well, their loss.

      • houstonche - 10 years ago

If your phone has a high failure rate with your customer base, there can be serious consequences. “Their loss” won’t be an acceptable answer if it comes to that.

      • Chris Sanders - 10 years ago

This consumer wants a thin pretty and durable device. I am shock by the ease of how he was able to bend it. My guess is that it was bend already coming out of the box.

  10. Mr. Grey (@mister_grey) - 10 years ago

I hate this video, especially the stupid backwards cap. This guy looks like a bad “silent Bob” imitation (and “Jay and Silent Bob” were actually only cool for a brief period in the early 90’s).

Talk about living in the past. Show some respect for your audience and dress like a normal adult human, not like 90’s kid living in your Mom’s basement.

    • latinoboyboy - 10 years ago

I love watching Lew’s videos. He seems like a nice guy and his unboxings are cool. There’s this one video where he unboxes a Happy Meal. I think you should cut him some slack. I fumbled to be able to get 1 iPhone 6 Plus unit, he was able to obtain several units of both handsets at launch. He must be doing something right.

  11. Edison Wrzosek - 10 years ago

Based on this, it definitely looks like the phone doesn’t have enough structural reinforcement next to the volume rockers, as it does tend to want to bend at that point.

This is a bit concerning, but I’m not sure what Apple can do about this, short of re-designing the internal frame, or adding some structure internally.

    • jorge1170x - 10 years ago

They need to halt production and quickly engineer a rigid buttress or series of stiffeners and/or gussets right there behind that volume rocker area. hopefully there is a little extra room there to add more structure. I can’t see this not happening eventually, because this is bad PR. There will already be many millions of the “weak” iPhones in the wild by the time the effect the change, though.

  12. Miguel Bica - 10 years ago

-.- Of course almost all cell phones blend. Common sense!

  13. Toro Volt (@torovolt) - 10 years ago

I am surprised of this happening. What ever happened to Apple excellence in engineering and attention to detail?
Since the 6+ is a premium phone it should be a bit more rugged.

I’ve carried my iPod Touch 5G which has similar aluminum body on my jeans back pocket and sited on it like twice and no bending. It has a thin and light TPU case.

    • latinoboyboy - 10 years ago

The problem with it is the size. Since the iPod touch is smaller it’s harder to bend. The iPhone 6/6 Plus isn’t the only phone to have this problem, it has existed since the iPhone 4 and other non Apple phones have had this problem in the past (HTC EVO 4G LTE, Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia Z1 and Blackberry Q10). I’ve never experienced this because I always put a case on my phone.

      • Jon C (@JonCBK) - 10 years ago

The BBRY Q10? That thing is a beast with a steel structure. I can’t imagine it bending in normal or even heavy use. Certainly not in your pocket.

      • Chris Sanders - 10 years ago

All the phones bend if you sit on them or try to bend them. LMAO!

      • Bending the BB Q10? Sorry, but no can do, I have one. It’s probably one of the strongest and sturdiest phones out there, has a small footprint in a steel frame.
I saw this same list of ‘bendable phones’ from a newspaper site. Clearly they just make stuff up on the fly.

      • giskardian - 10 years ago

The iPhone 4 has a steel frame and two thick slabs of glass. It does not bend when sat upon and is IMO the greatest mobile phone design ever.

The 5 was the first one with an aluminium frame, and there were a few reports of it bending, but not so easily as the 6+.

    • taoprophet420 - 10 years ago

You cut an apple logo into it it makes the device weaker.

  14. sirfrancis0 - 10 years ago

Dude applying the type of pressure you did to the phone in order to get it to bend will make any phone bend/break. Sitting in your front pocket I don’t see how this can happen at all. When you’re sitting down the phone is laying flat across your thigh. If you have it in your back pocket sitting down then you’re an idiot and in the case it won’t bend the screen will crack before anything.

    • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

I agree that what he is doing is idiotic….the problem is what is actually causing the slight kink in that weak point below the volume buttons.

      • Max Mars (@devianter) - 10 years ago

Zanetti (are you italian?) switch the iPhone with ANY other phone, do the same test and it will fucking shatter

      • houstonche - 10 years ago

Actually I doubt all phones would be have the same. The size, structure, and material will all dictate how a phone case responds to a force. As Zanetti has explained, the real concern should be the weak point. If it was reinforced there it would be much more structurally sound.

My only complaint with this video is he didn’t have any means of measuring the force applied to the phone.

      • originaldub - 10 years ago

Hey Max, What if he is Italian? I think he is right and I am not sure that by switching the 6 for any other phone would get you the same results.

  15. Alex Vecchio - 10 years ago

um. wow. this is just crazy. i LOL’d at the bendgate comment. watch apple come out and say, well you’re not holding it right, or ok here put your phone in a case. it wont bend if you have it in a case…

guess we will be getting a free case from apple soon :)

  16. aediaz10 - 10 years ago

So this proves that IT’S NECESSARY to buy a hard case for the phone.

  17. rogifan - 10 years ago

who abuses their phone like this? What’s the point of this other than to create FUD and make the average Joe think their phone is going to bend by looking at it.

    • hmurchison - 10 years ago

Morons do and I think they SHOULD pay more for their screwups. No one forces people to buy a smartphone. If they want to abuse it they should pay for it.

  18. quagski - 10 years ago

This isn’t anything new. I brought my iPhone 5 into my local Apple Store after I noticed it had a considerable bow to the body – it would not sit flat on a table. I was just shy of owning the phone for a year and always kept a case on it. Apple replaced it under warretny without asking any questions.

  19. Fake Sound (@Secrxt) - 10 years ago

When he said “science,” I was hoping for a force meter.

    • jrox16 - 10 years ago

Good point. But his hands were shaking under the strain, so that does imply, unless he’s super wimpy, that it does take a decent amount of force and is in no way a design flaw or defective. Obviously at some point, a thin phone is going to bend, no matter what you make it out of. If it were stainless steel it would be too heavy and if it were titanium it would cost a fortune.

  20. David Berger - 10 years ago

I’d love to see someone using the same forces to a Samsung Galaxy Note (e.g.)… Just for comparison…

  21. CP (@cp7) - 10 years ago

Definitely can’t put this in the pockets of your skinny jeans!

  22. jrox16 - 10 years ago

His hands were shaking under the strain which implies he was using a pretty good deal of force. Bottom line, do not put in back pocket and sit down on it. Front pockets I find unlikely and I’m not sure I believe the people in the reports of front pocket bending after seeing how much force he put into it (again, shaking hands implies he’s reaching his strength limit as what appears to be an average sized male).

    • chrisl84 - 10 years ago

Not really, small forces over long periods can have the same results of large forces over short periods. A giant Phablet that cant sit flush against a thigh will be subjected to mild strain and eventually succumb to it. And since the 5.5 inch 6 plus will not go deep enough into many pocket types to reach flat thigh space the end closest to your hip will be subjected to continuous pressure.

      • jonahkirby - 10 years ago

That’s just not true when it comes to material science. Engineers design to an allowable threshold of many different forces and loading conditions. Failure only occurs after exceeding certain acceptable loading conditions. Small forces don’t add up over time. It just doesn’t work that way.. What you are referring to is cycling behavior. When something is cycled, usually in a dynamic environment, the. Strong loads over time can cause failure. That mainly applies to things that move, like hinges. Obviously there are exceptions, but in general, you can not assume small forces will eventually reform the device unless they exceed the yield strength of the material…. Btw, I’m an engineer

      • chrisl84 - 10 years ago

Fair enough, I guess my physics principles do not translate to engineering. However, in my defense I did say “can” not “will” :)

    • originaldub - 10 years ago

@jonahkirby Just for the record I am not an engineer but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night and after reading your comment I have my doubts so unless you can provide some sort of references supporting your statements they are moot. Can you give please define cycling behaviour?

Stating that you are an engineer doesn’t mean anything here by the way.

  23. Kawaii Gardiner - 10 years ago

The solution: Throw away tight pants and wear looser ones.

Honestly, anyone remember the cracked screens because people would put it in their back pocket then sit on it?

  24. bestbuildpc - 10 years ago

I hate when people try to hide the truth. If the device has a problem why you guys can not accept it. This device costs lots of money so it has to be quality. Come one! Grow up! I am not gonna buy that poor quality device for 1000 euros.

  25. sardonick - 10 years ago

I don’t care what the lemming excuses are, a phone that costs this much should not bend like this under normal use or storage in a pocket. That’s bollocks. Clearly, at the least, the button area where there is less material should be reenforced.

  26. This type of crap happens every single year a new iPhone comes out. If you have not noticed, Apple makes the iPhone thinner and thinner every year so why is it such a surprise to everyone that people are bending their phones in their tight ass jeans? If you are sticking this in your back pocket and sitting on it or putting it in your skinny jeans front pocket and putting continuous pressure on the device then YES it is going to bend you idiot! Use some common sense!

    • OMG! I just drove my car into a wall. I can not believe how bad I smashed up the front end of it! I am going to make a video of it. Don’t buy this car!! They should really make these things more durable! Crash Gate 2014!

      • Ario (@ArioYazdan) - 10 years ago

should we put it around out necks instead? or does every man have to carry a purse, too?

      • originaldub - 10 years ago

Hilarious! You are totally missing the point retard.

  27. Bruno Fernandes (@Linkb8) - 10 years ago

The primary cause for weakness are the rounded sides – they’re not as structurally sound as a box shape (vertical sides).

Next, the point of the bend is a weak spot because it has less material than other points along the side AND it’s the point at which there’s enough phone on either side of it to give enough leverage to bend. Any point along the volume buttons and mute switch has similar amounts of material, but not as much leverage can be applied.

In this case the unibody alone is a detriment. They could have added a bit of weight and included steel channels inserted along the sides to increase rigidity. Or of course gone with flat/straight sides which would also increase strength, similar to the iPhone 5. Changing over to steel instead of aluminum, like the iPhone 4 would also help, but increase weight.

Design is a trade off, and if you want thin, light and aluminum, this kind of fragility is to be expected. Unfortunately.

  28. Pablo Zaremba - 10 years ago

The problem is to pretend that any device with a 5+ display could be a pocketable one. Try to sit with a Galaxy Note in you pocket and you will get broken Note. I struggle to see the find

    • mariax (@marialuis27) - 10 years ago

dude you seem stupid cause i have a note 3 and i have it in my pocket 16 hours a day and it never broke or bend. defending Apple doesn’t fix people problem they many lots of money for this they deserve a good quality product. shame on you.

  29. Ario (@ArioYazdan) - 10 years ago

Those who defending Apple by saying “don’t put the phone in your pocket” really need a reality check. This is a quality I’d expect from a knockoff brand not Apple. They really messed up with this one. I am predicting a new Samsung ad tomorrow.

    • Max Mars (@devianter) - 10 years ago

either your phone bends or you thigh fucking breaks. you can’t expect to put a mini tablet in your tight ass skinny fag jeans and expect it to be perfect.

      • Ario (@ArioYazdan) - 10 years ago

$700 for a piece of crap that bends in normal every day handling is a waste of money even if it has Apple logo on it. That’s something the iSheep fails to comprehend.

The blow-back to Samsung being dumb enough to doing that would backfire for obvious reasons. The net would be flooded with bent Galaxy Note videos. Samsung et. al. are more than aware of their devices vulnerabilities and this is one area into which they do not want to travel.

The same guy just did the galaxy note 3, now I’m no fan of samsung at all. I think their phones are tasteless and just bloated; however, the built quality of Note 3 is much better than iPhone 6+. Check it out for yourself: w w w . youtube . c o m/watch?v=FwM4ypi3at0&feature=youtu.be

This stuff is all over the net and has been for years, and Samsung knows where this road leads.

The iPhone 6 plus will continue to break records despite the fact that ‘Droiders desperately need it to be otherwise. Sorry that you’re this upset about Apple’s phenomenal successes this week, but if that’s the case, the next 6 months to a year will be particularly difficult for you.

BTW, parroting the same iSheep phrase that all other Fandroids repeat everyday, everywhere without thinking through the specious logic of it: as ‘droiders shout from the rooftops their mantra that Android is the number one OS on the planet, and that more people have jumped on the ‘Droid bandwagon than Apple’s iOS, they ludicrously then point to iPhone users as the “sheep” who are incapable of breaking away from the herd and thinking for themselves. Time for new material, eh? Need to phone a friend?

science much? Don’t care what you waste your phone on, but you should at least attempt some kind of scientific method here. “I am going see how much force it takes” you never saw how much force it took. Maybe find someone with an Instron or Zwick and do a 3 point bend test. Easy as pie. Just like the stupid drop test where you idiots apply as must methodology as a 3 year old. No wonder you get so hung up on global warming, you don’t know shit.

How could you measure the force with your hand… You have a built-in force sensor?…

  36. Jeremy Markham - 10 years ago

I bent my iPhone 5S when it was placed in the back of my pocket. It was very minimal but after that I cased it AND Apple swapped it out for me. The guy at the Apple store was really nice and helpful.

  37. dragonitedd - 10 years ago

Without a force sensor & comparison, how can we know the exact moment which could bend the 6+? How much will be the moment to bend 6 & 5s? Can you bend them with your hand? If you wanna do experiments, be at least a little bit more strict so that we can get something useful… Maybe with your full power output, 5s can also be bent

  41. Tom Who (@TommieWho) - 10 years ago

So now you can’t put your phone in your front pocket because, oops, your $800 phone might bend in half when you sit down. Sorry, there is NO defense that makes this acceptable for a product from Apple. This is why I hate that the iPhones keep getting larger and thinner. They’re too damn fragile. Soon we’ll be carrying our iPhones around in a wooden box full of bubble wrap.

    • b9bot - 10 years ago

What’s wrong with you? Think about how big your pocket is and how large the phone is. Then if it feels to tight what would you expect from any phone? It would bend or break. Buy a Samsung Note and try and put it in your small pockets and see what happens. Your sorry little brain will be very hurt because it will bend and break too! That’s like saying I’m not going to buy a full sized pickup truck because I can’t park in a motorcycle spot. DUH!!!!

      • Niels (@vbq31797) - 10 years ago

Nothing happens with a Samsung Note, because the materials they use are much stronger. Although I love the materials Apple uses, it is just too fragile for such a large device. In my opinion this is unacceptable for many people and I sold my shares yesterday.

  42. This is probably a lot like Toyotas that accelerate uncontrollably. See them all the time!

This fucking sucks. Now I have to hold off on an iPhone until we get word from Apple that they will fix this or repair it if this happens.muntil then, I think we all should hold off on the Plus.

  45. b9bot - 10 years ago

I don’t understand why you would do this at all. Okay let’s take a brand new car and drive 50MPH into a solid cement wall. What would you expect the results would be? No you won’t get that replaced under warranty, why should you?

  46. Peter iNova (@BuzzMega) - 10 years ago

Belt pouch. Stiff leather. Similar to the one I’ve used for iP 4s/5s only bigger. Cost about 7.22 US including shipping. Holds iP6+ in horizontal attitude and generous enough interior to accommodate shell or bumper. Hope that works. I found it here: eBay>DISCOUNTED: Leather Pouch Belt Clip Case Holster for Apple iPhone 6 Plus NEW. Wearing it before iP6+ arrives just to see if it passes the comfy test. So far/so good.

  47. kplayaja - 10 years ago

should’ve kept the iPhone 5s design and just made it larger. That was the most beautifully designed iPhone.

  48. Chris Sanders - 10 years ago

Basically, what we have here is people wanted an iPhone 6 scandal so they started trying to snap their phones in half. LMAO!!!!

  49. bb1111116 - 10 years ago

If I owned Apple stock, I would be concerned with this bending phone problem.
    – The antenna issue (with the iP 4) could easily be avoided.
    – The duplicating of fingerprints (with the iP 5S) was a stunt.
    * But many people put their smartphone in their pocket (I don’t, I use a belt pouch but that is very unusual for a guy).
Samsung is going to pound Apple in ads about this issue.

    • Kylie Trager - 10 years ago

Samsung will go nowhere near this, unless they want to put up with a rehash of bent and broken Galaxy complaints that are all over the net and have been for years. And they certainly don’t want to see a rash of new YouTube videos featuring their devices in vengeful bending-test responses.

This is not a new phenomenon. Samsung, and all device makers for that matter, are well aware of their handsets’ vulnerabilities and this is one area on which they have no interest in focusing. This iPhone 6 Plus bending tale is a tempest in a teapot that’s being played for all it’s worth by Androiders who are desperate for any kind of victory vis a vis Apple’s phenomenal successes this week. The 6 plus will continue to break sales records despite the few folks who can’t resist sitting on them.

      • bb1111116 - 10 years ago

I think this story will continue.
The same person on YouTube who bent the iPhone 6+ made another video to try and bend a Galaxy Note 3. He couldn’t do it.

Samsung’s ads against Apple have pretty much been nonsense.
But customers will care about the iPhone 6+ bending in pants pockets.
And I think new Samsung ads will focus on the bending issue.

Again, I’m not an Apple hater. I’m buying a new iPhone 6.
It’s too bad this flaw happened with the new iPhones.

  50. taoprophet420 - 10 years ago

It’s obvious to me this is because of the Apple logo being cut out. More surprised nobody has mentioned it as being the culprit here.

Lightly applying pressure on my 6 plus it doesn’t flex much till u get close to rhe Apple llogo were it is easy to tell it flexes more.

    • Chris Sanders - 10 years ago

      Interesting observation.

      • taoprophet420 - 10 years ago

It’s also near the end of the battery so there is less resistance. Everything above it is antenna, camera housings and other light components.

The logo should been in the middle like the iPads the upper third of the phone is definitely is not as rigid as it should be. Wondering if the new antena gaps add to the flexing of the phone.

It might be the combination of having all the cutouts at the same place. The power cutout, volume rocker, mute switch and Apple logo are in the same area.thw frame definitely feels much weaker there. Not going to apply much force, but to me with slight pressure you can feel it flex more then you should in the upper third of the phone.

  51. How could anyone make excuses for this? Just because it is thin doesn’t mean it can’t be rigid, it probably should have been anodized more. Or maybe Apple should have just sacrificed another millimeter to make it stronger, either way. This is a huge design flaw, I’ve never seen a flagship phone with such a flimsy chassis before.

  52. breakingallillusionsx - 10 years ago

Lmfao. A phone will not bend in your pocket. Look at the force it takes to purposely bend!! Find something else to bitch and moan about. My iPhone six plus has no pressure on it at all in my pocket wether sitting or stand or running or walking or laying down. If u want to try to find a problem with something you will. If u want to try and break something u can. I can snap my iPhone 5s if I wanted as well with any other phone from any company, but why try it???? Wake the fuck up. You people who need to bitch and moan about everything and try to pull something out of your ass make this world sad sick fucking place.

    • Dan Baker (@danielbaker) - 10 years ago

My 6plus will arrive on Oct 28. However I may change it to a 6. If the 6plus will bend in my jeans were the 5S did not, then that is unacceptable to me. I will keep watch and see if I need to cancel my order. Too bad, I was really looking forward to a bigger screen. I would really like to see what Tim Cook has to say about this. This is his opportunity to lead at the head of this event, and not from behind.

Remember flip-phones? Those bent all the freaking time…but whatever. People still owned them. I am happy Apple is held to a higher bar…I don’t think the 6+ is meant for a pocket and if you do stick it in your front pocket…that must be uncomfortable.

  55. “You’re sitting on it wrong!!”

  56. This could be a good marketing thing for Apple.

    Introducing ‘Bendability’

  57. ninuola - 10 years ago

Did anyone notice the way he placed his thumbs are different when bending the phones are different? Does that matter??

  58. Andrew Maloney - 10 years ago

You have a phone that size in your front pocket (and thats is where my phone lives, long with keys and wallet on the other side) and there is always a bend when you sit down. My wallet even has a curved shape to it from being in my pocket, some of my keys get bent. Making the phone from aluminium, and this size to boot, is really a recipe for disaster!

  59. Andrew Kennard - 10 years ago

No one seems to be trying to bend it the other way …. glass is pretty strong in compression…so if the face is towards leg in front pocket I would have thought it would stand to some pretty tight tensions caused from the material flowing over the back

  60. if they’d opted for a larger battery in there instead of an oh-so-thin body, we’d all be a lot happier now.

    I hate to be confirmed but I am… :/

  61. arjay67 - 10 years ago

Whaaaaa! Why do people abuse their “phablets” by carrying them in their pocket? You reap what you sow.

  62. Aunty Troll (@AuntyTroll) - 10 years ago

Listen, it doesn’t matter where your allegiances lie – Apple, Samsung, HTC, Blackberry or anyone else – a phone should not bend like that. Since the advent of pocketable phones, putting it in your back pocket carries more risk than putting it in your front pocket if you forget about it and sit down which is fair enough. However, this has happened in a front pocket. There are lots of phones of that size and even bigger which don’t do that and have never done that. Before my iPhone 5S I had a Galaxy Note 2 and that never did that (though I did get rid of it because it was too big).

Your a customer – these manufacturers owe it to YOU to give you the best, not the other way round – no excuses.

  63. Nabil Zeidani - 10 years ago

Don’t underestimate the pressure he exerted on the phone, his hands were shaking because of the pressure. I beleive this will happen rarely especially when you wear very tight pants and it does not make sense to put it in the front pocket if you wear skinny pants. However, it is not a war shield. It is a phone and it is less durable than the previous models.

  64. Niels (@vbq31797) - 10 years ago

How is it possible that the time on the iPhone is 2:26 (at 2:17 in the movie) when he is bending the iPhone and 1:59 after he bended the iPhone (at 2:34 in the movie).

    • Great point. There’s obviously something disingenuous going on in this bend “test”. He must’ve bent it to the extreme limit, then reformed it to the only slightly bent shape, only to bend it again in the video, seemingly without much force to make at seem as if it bends without putting up a fight. I smell bullshit!

    • Paul Mather - 10 years ago

At 2:17 in the video, the iPhone time says 1:58? Can you recheck the times, as I was curious about your findings but it cannot see anything dodgy?

  65. It’s important to note that his phone STARTED with a slight bend to it already before the test, meaning the structure had already been compromised and a weak point had already been introduced. It is reasonable to believe that the initial bend happened because of a force greater than just sitting in his jeans pocket. I’d be willing to bed he inadvertently caused the slight dent, then figured he go all the way and see how much more it can bend. A new, structurally sound iPhone 6 Plus would not bend quite as easily as what’s shown in this video.

  66. Paul Mather - 10 years ago

Nobody drops, blends or bends an iPhone for science, they do it for attention/link bait. He didn’t sacrifice his phone and he knew it at the time, he was buying himself a few million hits on his channel, just wanted to clear that up.

Next, Android fan boys, just fuck off back the Android fan sites and jerk off over your plastic devices. It’s always the same, Apple fans don’t give a shit about Android nor their devices, yet Android fans are OBSESSED, yes, obsessed with Apple. Ever wonder how much time you waste trying to slate Apple? Ever wonder why you do it? Idiots.

Finally, I don’t know what to think about this. The video itself hasn’t concerned me, the guy applied a lot of pressure to cause it to bend, pressure I will never apply to my phone. However, the reports from users having their phone bend in their front pockets? That does concern me.

IF my 6 plus bends under normal use, I will not be leaving the Apple store without a replacement.

  67. Paul Mather - 10 years ago

    THIS VIDEO IS FAKE!

1:39 in the video when he’s bending the phone, the iPhone clock reads 2:26, Thursday September 23
2:16 in the video when the phone is already bend, the iPhone clock reads 1:58, Thursday September 23

This obviously doesn’t make sense. Does bending an iPhone 6 Plus cause time travel? Or is this video actually a crock of shit and the iPhone has actually been bent several times? This guy has been doing this long enough, to know bending the iPhone was going to get way more hits than if he was unable to bend the iPhone.

I would love to hear some answers from the guy, sounds like he just fooled the internet.

    • Chris Sanders - 10 years ago

      Good catch.

      • Paul Mather - 10 years ago

Oddly almost everybody else dismisses the comment with some lame argument like “keep dreaming”. Ah well, I guess the majority on G+ are Android fans and thus it doesn’t suit them to see that the video isn’t as honest as it appears.

The first thing everyone does that I hand it to is to put it into their pocket to see how it feels. Everyone that has done that with is surprised how well it carries in the front pocket. And unless you have very tight pants or are squatting I can’t imagine it ever bending.

I’ve been an Apple fan for years (especially MacBooks). But having owned a Samsung Note 3 for the past year, and seeing these new concerns among others about the Plus 6 phone, I hate to say it but Apple dropped the ball on the design of this one. They’d have been much better off while playing catch-up to Samsung’s larger screen by also paying attention to its design.

The Note 3 simply does not “bend”. Plus when you add: its ingenious window-view thin case allowing phone calls to be received; memos to be written and photos to be taken without even opening the case (and increasing its rigidity even further while barely adding any thickness); a built-in removable stylus; changeable batteries so you can always keep a spare handy without having to recharge even though a single charge lasts a full day; an interchangeable SD card for added memory; multi-tasking windows; and a better keyboard in many ways (numbers on the same screen as letters, easy use of the swipe function), the Note 3 and likely the upcoming 4 are far superior designs.

The day the Plus 6 went on sale, I went to an Apple Store to compare it to my Note 3 honestly expecting to see something far better than what Samsung offered. I was wrong, and disappointed, without even considering it’s “bend-ability”. It’s actually bigger than the Note (with extra space above and below the screen), and yes, while its aluminum casing makes it “thinner and sleeker”, that’s what leads to its fragility. While I definitely agree it’s absurd to think a 700 dollar thin aluminum electronic device should be able to “bend” in a pants pocket, I’ve stored the Note in just that matter many times for hours without ever having a concern. Sorry Apple. But judging from what I’m reading and seeing first hand so far about the Plus 6, it sounds like it needs to go back to the drawing board.

If you carefully watch video of the iphone 6 plus bending test and the Galaxy 3 bending test, place attention of where the the guy positioned his thumbs on the phones. For iphone 6, he put the pressure on the edge of the phone and at the volume button where the weakest point of the phone is located. However, for the Galaxy, he pressed his thumbs at the center of the phone. Maybe iphone 6 plus could be bent, but watching the video clips leaves me questions about the guy’s credibility and motivation

    • moosesman - 10 years ago

The plus was already pre bent from the start. He even mentions that. He even stresses it at that already weak spot. Doesn’t seem credible.

  83. Jack Leonard Black - 10 years ago

I am so glad I saw this before I upgraded my family’s iPhones. I am sure my son would destroy his iPhone 6 plus within 2 weeks if I went through with our plans. I been torn as to whether we should finally make the switch from IOS to Android. I was looking at getting three new Galaxy Note 4’s to replace our iPhones. now this looks like a no-brainer. I have never heard of a Galaxy Note 3 bending.

  84. Citizen Broadcasting - 10 years ago

The Note 3 out sparkles the iphone 6 is just about every way. It has entry to all the peculiarities IOS 8 should have and they all work, its is significantly more strong and better composed telephone. The Note 4 will be far superior..
but the reason for bending is…
Considering the breadth, height and thickness of the iPhone 6 Plus (158.1×77.8×7.1mm), carrying the new Apple smartphone in a pocket that has little space for the handset to slide in or out is risky, and can lead to the bending of the phone, as reported by many users. Placing it in the back pocket could have even more disastrous consequences. The pressure put on the device while sitting now appears to have a higher chance to damage the device, unlike previous iPhone variants
