Apple Stores now sell these iPhone app-enabled Christmas lights in time for the holidays

Over the last week or two Apple Stores started stocking these new app-enabled Christmas lights from Lumenplay both online and in retail stores. Similar to other app-controlled lighting systems, Lumenplay comes as string lights perfect for Christmas trees or outdoor decorations as we move into the holiday season, opposed to the traditional lightbulbs from Philips and others.

The lights work over Bluetooth 4.0 and offer customizations for light colors, timers, effects, a music visualizer, and more via a companion app from the App Store.

The company sells a $79 starter kit with a 12-foot strand of 12 RGB LEDs. The starter kit comes with the Lumenplay Controller hardware necessary to connect to your iOS device (which has its own 24-inch lead), and additional 12-foot strands can be purchased minus the controller hardware at the lower cost of $59.

It’s available from Amazon and Apple Stores as well as a few other retailers now.

Considering the fact that we have a 7.5′ tree – and it has 1,500 lights on it (pre-strung on the tree) made up of 15 100 light strings – and doing the math, it would cost me $7,395.00 to replace them – No Thank You!

Get real – 12 lights for $59.00 – Not Happening!

That was the most B.S. riddled “feel good” product promo video I have ever seen. These thousands of dollars worth of lights make us so happy! Hey little kid want to sit on my shoulders and change the color of the lights on the house with a naked iPhone, while I stand on this asphalt surface?

Apple Stores already sell Philips hue lights, which you can animate any way you want, including Christmas colors, using Lightbow (http://ow.ly/E2qmc) If Lumenplay ever publishes a 3rd party developer API, we’d be happy to add support for their string lights as well. I contacted the developer asking if this were possible, though it probably won’t be in time for Christmas.

The formula to determine the number of lights you need for a Christmas tree is 100 lights per foot of tree. This seems like an unreasonable and very expensive solution for tree lights, considering there are only 12 lights per strand and each strand costs $59.
