Apple Watch makes UK fashion magazine debut with three-page feature in Style

watermarked-1

Following from features in fashion magazines in France and Germany, the Apple Watch has made its UK editorial debut in Sunday’s publication of Style. Although the Watch is not on the cover of the issue I received, there are four covers circulating — one of them features the Apple Watch as the cover photo. Regardless of whether you get a copy of the magazine with the special cover or not, inside the Watch gets three pages of press coverage.

The main picture features Guinevere Van Seenus wearing a 38mm Apple Watch Sport with Space Grey case and black sport band. The written accompaniment says that the Apple Watch does not convey ‘power, status and discernment’ like a Rolex can but holds back no punches in saying it will ‘wipe the floor with existing smartwatch manufacturers and give mid-market watchmakers a fright’. The magazine compliments Jony Ive in particular, for the design.

Jony Ive has got the tone of the Apple Watch just right. It looks elegant but not standoffish, and as well as the 18 variations of the regular version, there are the 10 Sport options, which come with a lightweight case, strengthened glass and a rubber strap, plus the more expensive Edition range (six models), made from 18ct gold.

This quote again implies that the only combinations of body and band Apple will offer at launch are those listed on its Gallery page. A selection of additional bands will be available to buy separately.

The double-page spread is accompanied by another single page, pictured above, that is written by ‘technology expert’ David Phelan. It is certainly interesting to see a more technical discussion of the product’s features in a fashion magazine.

The magazine directly addresses the price of the Apple Watch Sport with black band — $349. There was some speculation that certain types of bands would be more expensive, but this seems to dispel those comments. However, it is unclear whether the magazine is simply guessing the price to be $349 (extrapolating from the ‘from $349’ announced back in September), so it shouldn’t be fully trusted just yet.

Unfortunately, there are no new insights here beyond what is already common knowledge. He does criticise the lack of a camera for potentially missing out on ‘Generation Instagram’ who want to take selfies on their wrist, apparently.

Apple has already announced an event on March 9th, where it will go into more detail about the Apple Watch. Tim Cook has said it is planned to ship to customers in April.

  1. Everytime I see a photo of someone wearing Apple Watch I see it extremely stylish. Love it!

    • That’s marketing take they’re going for. Similarly to white earbuds back in the days.

My problem is I don’t see it stylish at all, in fact it looks little like a toy, with all the colours and square shape. I’m guessing it’s going to be one of those things you need to see in person. Hopefully.

How does being square make something look like a toy?

    • According to Apple “each has a watch case crafted from 18-carat gold that our metallurgists have developed to be up to twice as hard as standard gold”.

Now I’m no metallurgist (obviously), but that means the watch isn’t pure gold if it is mixed with something else. So after doing a bit of digging I found this link from 2011:

      http://news.discovery.com/tech/unscratchable-gold-111227.htm

Which interestingly enough details research by Hublot and how they have managed to manufacture an 18 carat gold by mixing gold with some type of ceramic to make it harder than normal gold – for watches.

Is it possible that Apple have perhaps got into bed with Hublot regarding the tech for this or at the very least have known it is possible and used their own technique.

Either way, according to that article the extra heft and higher quality could mean higher prices than even normal gold.

No shit, 18 karat gold is 75% gold. I can guarantee you that Apple is not partnering with that Hublot. Its common for watchmakers to create their own custom 18 karat gold alloys, for strength. Gold is quite soft.

When Apple (and other watchmakers) say the case is crafted from solid gold, they mean the entire case is crafted from a gold alloy and NOT plated. Thats what “solid” 18 karat gold means.

      • Yes – thanks for your considered, patronising response. It’s much appreciated. Did you see my comment about not being a metallurgist :)

@bzamayo, Does anyone else read the last picture as “Apple Watch Sport with 38mm Space Grey aluminium case and black band, $349” or is it just my interpretation?

    • dailycardoodle - 9 years ago

Yes. So Apple watch sport (available in 5 colours) will be $349 for smaller size and either the same for 42mm or a little more.

The stainless watch price is not known.

The edition watch price is not know.

All available variations are shown in the gallery…
      https://www.apple.com/uk/watch/gallery/

Some straps will be available to buy separately at varying costs. The basic rubber one being cheap. Some being very expensive.

I think that home screen is brill. Nothing else out there like it. And with all these Android OEMs copying the traditional male watch look (I’m sure we’ll be seeing a round watch from Samsung any day now too) there will be a sea of sameness on the Android side with Watch being unique.

  4. Christian Marker - 9 years ago

don’t you notice the $350 price in the picture?

    • Christian Marker - 9 years ago

      $349**

    • 2is1toomany - 9 years ago

I found that interesting too. I was wondering if $349 would get me an Apple Watch with or without a case. I guess this is hinting even more that the watches do come with their own bands, exactly like the gallery online shows.

      • Hinting? What? Apple announced the price, specifically what’s mentioned in this article, there are no hints or questions about this. It’s $349 for the basic sport model. It doesn’t matter if the plastic band is black or green.

      • Lee Palisoc - 9 years ago

Bruno, they said Apple Watch starts with $349 when they announced it. So what they meant is the very basic line-up which is the stainless version. The one on the magazine is Sports, it’s between the low-end and the high-end (Edition). So maybe (maybe!), the low-end’s gonna be cheaper.

      • rettun1 - 9 years ago

Lee, the sport is the cheapest model of the three. I believe Tim Cook said so, in addition brushed aluminum is less expensive than polished stainless steel

      • dailycardoodle - 9 years ago

Lee, the Sport model is the cheapest one. It’s baffling how people could think the stainless/sapphire/ceramic is the cheap one!

      • dailycardoodle - 9 years ago

What do you mean by “an Apple Watch with or without a case”?

  5. dailycardoodle - 9 years ago

“the price of the Apple Watch Sport with black band — $349. There was some speculation that certain types of bands would be more expensive, but this seems to dispel those comments”

How does this dispel those comments?

All 10 sport variations come with a cheap rubber strap – they cost $349 for the 38mm – the same or a little more for the 42mm. Some straps will be available to purchase separately at various prices. What’s confusing?!

  6. NerdShouts - 9 years ago

I will take this as a beginning. There is so much to view and take on this Apple Watch. Let Apple launch it in real market, so we can have people voice to help in our decisions. It is a shinny gadget that is not going make a bent.
