Apple reportedly set to produce record 90 million ‘iPhone 6S’ this year with Force Touch and new color option

Following reports that said Apple had begun manufacturing the next-generation iPhone in late June, a new report by the Wall Street Journal is oloorroborating the story. It says that Apple is asking suppliers to produce a record number of ‘iPhone 6S’ units for the upcoming fall launch, topping 90 million units by the end of the year. Apple sold 74.5 million iPhones in the equivalent quarter in 2014, spurred by the success of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The report also matches previous rumors that the new iPhone will feature Force Touch, which 9to5Mac extensively covered back in May. The iPhone 6S is expected to look almost identical to the iPhone 6 with improvements focusing on the camera, new pressure sensitivity screens and internal component improvements.

The report also claims that the iPhone 6S will include a new case color. KGI has previously said that the silver, space grey and gold iPhones will be accompanied by a rose gold option. However, other reports have since claimed that the new iPhone color will actually be a shade of pink. Anxious customers should also expect improvements to the camera sensor and CPU with the iPhone likely incorporating an ‘Apple A9’ processor.

The iPhone 6S will likely be unveiled in early September at a press event with a release later in the month. Updates to both the 4.7 and 5.5 inch models are expected.

Force touch is a great feature but there should be a lot more improvements for this.

White silver and gold, black/space gray….so my first choice would be black/blue! That’s the best combination!

  3. If those numbers are correct, t is almost 20% year over year growth. They must be really confident on the 6S to plan all this growth rate.

80 million 6 and 6 pluses were made last year, so the 90 million is only a 9 percent increase.

Wish Apple could meet demand on the non S updates. Will be nice to have a smooth release from Apple for once.

Apple is going to be doing gangbusters in China for a good long time, thus the incredible confidence in phone sales.

They need to make a Slate colored iPhone 6s. Just like the iPhone 5.

Of course they’ll have “struggles” again this time around. That’s how the business goes. You want something that you can’t have. “Did you hear? EVERYONE wants the NEW shiny iPhone, but there’s NO enough of it on the shelves… I am so excited, I would KILL to have one”-sort-of-thing. :D :D Of course Apple can afford to stock ALL of their stores at once, with enough phones for the whole planent, if they want. But they don’t. And, as usual, 2-4 weeks prior to Christmas, all of the sudden, we all get enough phones on the shelves. :) Simple business logic. I guess they expect stronger sales due to, as mentioned above, higher demand in China, as well as more “switchers” from 4/4s, why not 5 and 5s, too. But tons of 4s/5 people will get the 6s, that’s for sure!

extremely unlikely it will outsell iphone 6. all reasons to upgrade happened last fall and mostly everyone who wanted an upgrade already got it.

plenty of 5s users (or even older iPhone users) who still haven’t upgraded. And Force Touch + Taptic engine may provide an exciting reason for some android users to switch. And then there’s the enormous smartphone adoption happening in China. So there’s lots of potential for the 6s to outsell the 6.

Like many of my friends I am on the S upgrade cycle. I am not surprised that Apple is expected to sell more of the 6S/6S+ than the 6/6+. Force touch could be a killer feature that also prompts many existing 6 users to upgrade.
