Report: New iPhone and Apple TV to be announced at Sept. 9 event, iPad Pro a ‘wildcard’

Tim Cook WWDC 2015

According to a new report from BuzzFeed’s John Paczkowski, Apple will hold its annual fall iPhone event on September 9th. The report, citing “sources familiar with Apple’s plans,” claims that Apple is targeting the week of September 7th for the event, with Wednesday the 9th being the frontrunner right now.

At the event, Apple will unveil the iPhone 6s, which we unveiled exclusive details on earlier this summer. The iPhone 6s is expected to be largely similar to the iPhone 6, but with a pressure-sensitive Force Touch display and improved wireless connectivity. Apple is also expected to introduce its new Apple TV unit at the event with a redesigned interface, new remote, and support for an App Store. Apple’s web TV service, however, is not currently expected to be showcased at the September 9th event.

As far as iPads go, BuzzFeed says that Apple is aiming to show of new iPads at the event, as well. This contradicts the company’s usual move of holding a separate event in October to unveil refreshed iPads. The iPad Pro is still a “wildcard” for the event, however.

Last year, Apple held its fall iPhone event on September 9th, as well, with Paczkowski correctly reporting the date well in advance of an official announcement. Invites to the September 9th event should be sent to journalists roughly a week and a half before the date.

  1. All apple events have been held on Tuesdays, if I don’t remember wrong. Wednesday is a dead giveaway that this might just be horsecrap

    • Keep in mind labor day is that monday. So I believe they are pushing it to wednesday to have the tuesday to prepare, since they’ll most likely give some employees the monday holiday off. This is also leaked by John Paczkowski, who has close relations to Apple and have reported multiple reports correctly before

    • Rich Davis (@RichDavis9) - 9 years ago

Actually, that’s partially incorrect/correct. WWDC 2015 and others were on a Monday. But typically if it’s not at a WWDC event, Aren’t most or many WWDC’s held on a Monday? it’s typically on a Tuesday, so you’re half right.

I think that it is on 9/9 just because it is iOS 9

Any chance of OIS on the 6s camera – a little tired of my huge iPhone 6 plus…

    • foodie202 - 9 years ago

Wow, talk about first world problem! I have the 6 because of its size (Goldilocks phone!), but frankly the camera is so great, that OIS is not a major issue. If it were, then get an SLR hand-held camera. So the fact that they had OIS on any phone is pretty much a miracle, and if they can shrink it just 1 year on to the size of a 6 form-factor, that would be amazing. Not impossible, but amazing.

How about a new headless unit with high end i7’s? The prosumer market could use that. Something that’s between a MacMini and a MacPro that’s headless. Bueller? Bueller? Bueller? Anyone? Anyone? LOL.

    • mpias3785 - 9 years ago

Mac users have been clamoring for this type of machine since the iMac and Power Mac models came out in the late 90s. We got the Mac Mini which was great until they discontinued the quad core i7 model, introduced in 2012. I think an iMac level computer without a monitor would be fantastic, but given their past history I’m not holding my breath. Apple has chosen to ignore the users that have been begging for something like this and I don’t see them changing their minds.

It really seems that Apple is actively pushing this market segment to other platforms.

September 1st make more sense since the following week has Labor Day.

  5. al0nte - 9 years ago

Usually the event is on a Tuesday with preorders on the following Friday O.o I doubt they would do anything on 9/11.

    • Dillon Baio - 9 years ago

Why? We aren’t allowed to do absolutely anything on 9/11 anymore? A company can’t even launch a product that day because it’s disrespectful to something that happened 14 years ago?

      • ya, I agree. like is it really that big of a deal anymore? Like yes, it was said, but is it dis respectful to launch a product on 9/11, I think not. If it is, shouldn’t we just close everything on 9/11, and do nothing?!

  6. galley99 - 9 years ago

I bought a 128GB iPad this morning because it has all the features I need and I saved $142 due to the Best Buy sale and Tax-Free Weekend in South Carolina.

  7. I want a new Apple TV! With an App Store!

  8. jamessmooth - 9 years ago

Announcement on the 9th and available the 18th? Sounds about right…

  9. kpom1 - 9 years ago

I wonder if we’ll see new Apple Watch bands that day, or perhaps at the iPad update the following month.

  10. taoprophet420 - 9 years ago

I don’t see the iPad mini and iPad Air updates being unveiled at the event. iPad Pro and Apple TV unveil followed by an October event for when the Apple TV and iPad Pro go on sale and the mini and air get revealed and go on sale.

I think Apple would give developers more then 9 days to prepare apps for the new Apple TV and iPad Pro.

Since AT&T and verizon are no longer going to subsidize iPhones, I predict a sharp drop in iPhone sales.

    • Jared (@GunningGunny) - 9 years ago

I have to agree. People are going to be sticker shocked and confused when they see an installment plan and not the usual $199.

      • mpias3785 - 9 years ago

For the first time since 2007, I’m seriously considering either waiting another year or two before an upgrade or possibly going the iPod Touch and a cheap Android. Going android would be like giving myself a vasectomy with a rasp file but spending near $1K for a phone with only a 2 year Applecare contract makes me want to vomit.

      • galley99 - 9 years ago

That’s one reason why I chose Sprint’s lease option. I got the 128GB iPhone 6 Plus with no money out-of-pocket and unlimited everything for only $8 more per month than what I had been paying for a subsidized phone.

    • standardpull - 9 years ago

I think that sticker shock will lead customers to other providers that provide a better deal.

Verizon and AT&T aren’t as capable as they once were. Other providers are beating them at quality and price. The market has turned a lot since 2007.

      • mpias3785 - 9 years ago

AT&T and Verizon have only improved in my area over the years. T-Mobile and Sprint both stink and people who use them as providers get no signal in my apartment and I don’t exactly live in the sticks. I live in the megapolis that runs from Boston to Washington, not far from NYC.

An AppleTV that has an App store, is a Wii U, xBox One, and PS4 competitor.

    App Store = Games

At this point AppleTV does exactly the same things, and serves the same purpose as those systems.

Apple trying to sneak that in to downplay expectation, yeah I get it – but too bad. Hype the wholly crap out of it.

Apple is taking Nintendo down first, and going head to head with Microsoft for the number 2 spot in video game systems.

I don’t think they can catch up to PS4, especially with their weak spec’d system – and while they do have some nice exclusives, they aren’t the a-list games that hard core gamers expect.

    • benfrankart - 9 years ago

Wait’ll Metal comes to Apple TV. Apple is notorious for down spec’ing but man do they optimize.

    • Inaba-kun (@Inaba_kun) - 9 years ago

The gulf in power between even the highest end iOS parts (the iPad Air 2) and a PS4 or Xbox One is gigantic. 300gflops for the iPad Air 2 vs 1.8flops in the PS4. Then there is the issue of storage – a PS4 or XO game will be 30-50gb.

Plus the app store is full of free to play junk with a smattering of “premium” priced games which are actually still virtually free. Would a gaming ATV have it’s own exclusive high priced games, or would it just receive thousands of ports of terrible iPhone games?

Don’t forget that the big three console vendors also have high end exclusives, such as Mario, Zelda, Halo, Uncharted, and many more. What exclusives could the app store attract gamers with? I’d struggle to think of a single title. Your comment about Apple “taking down” Nintendo is rather amusing. The Wii U was a failure but Nintendo have the best internal game developers on the planet, and Nintendo always bounce back. To count them out is naive and foolish.

    • northmccormick2014 - 9 years ago

I would agree… Developers are going to have to re-consider how they market their games, specifically mobile devs. You probably won’t get someone to pay and play candy crush on their TV. Games will HAVE to become more complex, lead longer stories, and be just that much more interactive to stay on top. I’m excited to see what people come up with.

As far as graphics quality goes, there’s definitely no way to compete with a console but most iPhones have more power and flexibility in the games than if you were to develop for the wii or DS (both of which I’ve programmed for)

      Time will tell

The iPad Pro – how hard can it be to make this thing. I mean Microsoft is in its 4th rendition of the Surface Pro.

    • northmccormick2014 - 9 years ago

Not that it’s hard to make, but Apple doesn’t just release 1000 products and hope that some sell lol. I totally believe it’s more of a marketing strategy how they place products out on the map.

  14. 21ice92 - 9 years ago

After using the 4S for 3+ years, it’s time to move on to the 6S!!!

  15. Jim Phong - 9 years ago

I really hope that they put at least the A8X SoC on the new AppleTV a maybe raised the TDP too to ensure higher performance … a 35Watt TDP AppleTV with A8X and 4GB RAM and 32GB SSD would be a very good console for gaming.

    • Inaba-kun (@Inaba_kun) - 9 years ago

It will never be able to play console quality games with those specs. Take for example a game like The Witcher 3, it requires 35gb of storage and isn’t able to maintain a solid 30fps on a PS4. There is no world in which a game of that level could run on any current iOS hardware. Looking at the rate of performance gains in mobile GPUs I can’t see it happening for another 3-4 years, maybe more.

  16. Ed Cupman - 9 years ago

The iPad Pro is a great idea. It would fill a niche in the market that is currently being taken advantage of by companies other than Apple. It is definitely the correct time to release it to the Apple throngs.

  17. caordico (@caordico) - 9 years ago

Can someone explain me the reason behind iPad Pro?

    • northmccormick2014 - 9 years ago

With current rumors, an iPad pro would be amazing in a lot of enterprise work. I have a bunch of clients who would hop on it immediately. If they were to include something like USB-C, it would allow a huge range of opportunity from working with proprietary machines, advanced computer interactions, etc. Imagine going to auto-zone to get your car computer checked. Instead of reading codes and relaying them via paper back to the computer, they just plug their attachment into the iPad pro, and then they have a full size work space of things they can do to order parts, call service, etc. It would be almost possible with the current iPad, but the current iPads lacks the software and hardware to really push forward in the enterprise market.

Where they are used, they work great.
