Apple updates TestFlight app with support for tvOS internal testing

On the eve of this year’s iPhone launch, Apple has pushed out an update to the TestFlight application to enable internal testing of apps on tvOS. The Apple TV operating system has is now in its second beta version for users who have access to pre-release hardware.

Developers have been able to test locally on their devices by plugging them directly into Xcode and building their app, but today’s TestFlight update will allow them to distribute the builds over-the-air to other members of the same development team.

TestFlight apps for tvOS are accepted by testers in almost the same way as iOS apps, but rather than tapping a link in the invitation email, users will enter a code into TestFlight using a “Redeem” button at the bottom of the app list. A TestFlight app on the Apple TV will allow for basically the same redemption method.

External testing wouldn’t be much use until next month when the general public is able to buy the new and improved Apple TV, so don’t expect to see that feature launch anytime soon. iOS 9 external beta testing didn’t become available until shortly before the software was released.

TestFlight now supports internal testing for tvOS apps and adds the ability for testers to accept beta invitations with redemption codes. The redemption code is found via a link within the invitation email and redeemed by entering the code in the TestFlight app.
