Samsung tries to sell its phones to … people in an Apple Store queue for an iPhone 6s

So, you’re Samsung. You want to try to sell some phones. You need to find some potential customers. You draw up lists of potential targets, and right at the bottom, in billionth place, are Apple fans so dedicated that they’ve queued up outside an Apple Store to buy the shiny new iPhone 6s. So where does Samsung go? Yep, to the Apple Store in London’s Regent Street, complete with backpack-mounted banners, reports The Enquirer. And it gets worse …

The marketing company employed by Samsung appeared to be trying to fool Apple customers into being videod with Samsung slogans. IBTimes reports that blue-jacketed people were handing out blankets, pillows and water bottles to people in the queue, each bearing the Samsung hashtag #NextisNew

Again, if you want to fool people, you wouldn’t think that a bunch of Internet-savvy people with smartphones to hand would make the ideal target.

“They were give to use by Apple,” a person in queue told International Business Times. A friend of his, however, was a little more savvy, quietly informing him: “No man, it was Samsung, I did a little research.”

As marketing ploys go, this one doesn’t seem to have been the smartest play in the book.

  1. :D :D :D This is so sad.

    • epicflyingcat - 9 years ago

I know. Why would anyone queue for a phone?

      • Why would anyone do what Samsung does you troll.

      • scumbolt2014 - 9 years ago

Why would losers que up to hassle people that are already in line for something else? Because they’re losers. Like you.

      • scumbolt2014 - 9 years ago

So basically you’re saying: “Why ever go outside and interact face-to-face with other humans.” I’d personally never wait in a long line for anything other than a hard to get concert ticket of my favorite band, but won’t talk shit about those that do for other things.

Just another sad jealous fandroid because Shitsung could release a phone that gives a bj and still no one would wait in a line for it.

      • epicflyingcat - 9 years ago

You wait online for concert tickets? Isn’t that all online these days?

Anyway, I wasn’t talking shit about them. I was just saying that there’s literally no need to wait in line for a phone, it’s just sad.

I wish you people could just chill and realise Samsung phones are great too, as well as iPhones. Samsung continues to push technological innovation perhaps more than anyone.

      • mpias3785 - 9 years ago

A sense of community, the party atmosphere. Why go to a bar when it’s cheaper to drink at home? Humans are social creatures and it’s fun.

      • epicflyingcat - 9 years ago

I think I’d get more of a ‘party atmosphere’ at an actual party, y’know?

    • Theyre actually filming a commercial to stage a trick show of how many Apple fans lining up “wanting” Samsung phones so bad. Video clips of people accepting their free stuff will be shown in a deceptive context. The finale is bringing in a Samsung-paid “Apple fan” who had queued up earlier then buying a Samsung instead. Commercial will be out in a week.

This is literally that I was thinking when I read this article. Thanks for confirming random internet dude.

That marketing stunt couldn’t possibly backfire!

  5. Peter Day - 9 years ago

I do love how Samsung seems to be taking shots at Apple when in more recent years (after the whole Mac vs PC thing) Apple hasn’t really done any of that. Yeah in Keynotes they mention how many people upgrade to the latest OS vs the diversity on android, But it seems very sad that Samsung are having to resort to we’re better then you apple sheep – rather then doing what apple do and just say why their phone is great. It’s reasons like this why the whole Android vs iOS war rages on. People feel a need to treat people who use other devices as hostile for some inexplicable reason all the while not accepting that it’s someone’s choice to use that platform, it’s bizzare

  6. applegetridofsimandjack - 9 years ago

    How pathetic has samesung gotten.

    • vamseenunna - 9 years ago

Actually, if you bother watching any of Google’s events, you’ll see that they make zero mentions of Apple in a negative context. Whereas Cook et al., aren’t beneath taking potshots at rival platforms at their events instead of simply focusing on what’s good on their own platform.

      • scumbolt2014 - 9 years ago

Too bad no one watches Google events but you.

      • Joe - 9 years ago

“Instead of simply focusing on what’s good on their own platform.” Really?

They don’t talk about what’s good on their own platform? The ENTIRE keynote is them talking about what’s good on their own platform! They show like 1 slide about android and it’s merely talking about how Apple’s adoption rate of new OSes is 85-90% after a few months and Android is like 7-10% after a year.

      • hijaszu - 9 years ago

I don’t remember any other context for other platforms than numerical comparison without mentioning manufacturers. Which you actually need if you want to display that you’re the best. Maybe you should watch the event broadcasts too, before forming an opinion about it.

  7. monty72 - 9 years ago

Certainly getting them a lot of publicity for the cost of a few peoples time and some silly wearable flags

    • mpias3785 - 9 years ago

Not all publicity is good. A public display of desperation, while both sad and funny coming from a company like Samsung, won’t increase sales or stockholder confidence.

  8. Felix Villegas - 9 years ago

I don’t know why people queue anymore, I just go to the local phone carrier and buy the phone there.

  9. usmansaghir - 9 years ago

Really Shitsung?? Stop wasting time, effort and money on trying to convince people from buying a iPhone to a qalaxy phone! Put your effort and money on trying to make you company a better and more profitable company. Use abit more of the brain and maybe one day. You might get a single line of people waiting outside your stores. Apple has done really well in looking after its customers. Its about time samsung starts doing the same!

    • hijaszu - 9 years ago

Well, they really try, they already copied Apple store as Samsung store. Too bad that most of the time the one that is in the middle of Sydney CBD is always almost empty :D

Maybe they should try to actually think, not to copy.

  10. spiralynth - 9 years ago

Pathetic, thieving, craplastic failure of a company. I’d be ashamed to own any of their products (never have and never will).

I truly love how this company continues to waste countless dollars promoting a product line with negative margins, while further digging itself further and further behind the dominant leader it somehow thinks it’s poking fun at. Joke is—and has been—on you, losers.

    Samsung, the next Blackberry.

  11. alanaudio - 9 years ago

They’re just handing out the blankets, pillows and water bottles that have been left unused when people didn’t queue for Samsung phones. There’s no prospect of them being needed in the near future, so they have to get rid of them one way or another.

  13. matthewr1990 - 9 years ago

Sony did it last year at Birmingham Bullring store in the UK, they had a big van advertising and selling their New Experia I have photos on my Twitter when I was at the launch of the 6. Had my 6S plus delivered to me today. Came at about 9:15 and it’s brilliant.

  16. srgmac - 9 years ago

I think this is pretty funny — Obviously they were doing this for a laugh / joke. What’s even more funny is some of the people fell for it, and thought that they were Apple! Waiting in line for something in 2015 is kind of stupid though…It reminds me of like 1995 when people slept outside of CompUSA for days waiting for Windows 95 to come out…It’s not the 90s anymore, we have better things to do than sit outside of a store…

      About Samsung…

      (1) First of all, cut right, the video could be used in a positive spin. (2) The backpack signs is still advertising to not only those in the Apple line but everyone passing by which is a lot of eyeballs (3) Everyone who hears of this on the ‘net still hears about Samsung and their new phone which might inspire some Samsung fans to seek it out. (4) Many fans in the queue will keep the blankets and bottles with the Samsung brand on it which might get them to perhaps consider a Sammy product (personally, Samsung “the Curve” tvs are simply amazing) — I think was an inexpensive way to get a lot of free publicity.

      About standing in a line…

You sound like you’ve never done this and while I don’t do it often, I have done lines for merch even when I could’ve bought online. It is a fun experience to be around other product fans and talk about all the new stuff. There’s always a sharing of information and generally, I come away with not only a new device but I’ve learned new ways to use it or ways to use another product I either have or want to get. Also, consider that while a person decided he wanted an iPhone, once he finally went to the website, he saw that it might take a couple of weeks to get it SO — he decided to take his chances and see if there were any new iPhones available locally and could buy TODAY. If a person has the time and doesn’t mind waiting in line and chatting in a good natured crowd, what’s the problem? Perhaps he bought a large coffee or drink and is having a very enjoyable wait. There are lines (DMV) and there are lines (APPLE QUEUE) … some are a lot more fun than others.

      • Ivan (@INFINITEAB1LITY) - 9 years ago

I agree with this 100%. i’ve waited a few times for things; PlayStation 2, Wii, Halo Reach, iPhone 5. Each time, it was a ton of fun. For a few of those, we ordered pizza, talked about various games, and once we played Monopoly and used a tiny putting green. You meet cool, like-minded people and just generally have fun. Honestly, I’d recommend doing it at least once.

  17. BDKennedy (@BDKennedy) - 9 years ago

People that are willing to stand in line for hours for an iPhone aren’t interested in Samsung.

  18. Rahul Gupta ✨ (@f0x45) - 9 years ago

This is seriously lame Samsung!! :D :D

  19. hayesunt - 9 years ago

They couldn’t give me one for free. Try to press it into my hand and it would end up falling on the ground. Have some self-respect.

This has got to be the funniest advertising ever. Samsung are crazy mother*******. Guess they’re really desperate because apple have fucked them.

Epic fail by Samsung. Their slogan for the S6 Edge is “Next is Now” not “New”.

    Desperation, what an ugly color

  28. finngodo - 9 years ago

As an iPhone user that took part in Samsung’s 30-Day Ultimate Test Drive with a Galaxy S6 Edge+, I’m happy to report that if you’re buying an iPhone 6S you’ve made the wise move. I never used anything from Samsung before this test drive, and while the hardware is very impressive, it’s just not on the same level as iPhone. The curved screen looks cool, but it’s functionality is pretty useless. But the major deal breaker is how awful Samsung’s Touchwiz OS overlay onto Android is. It’s ugly and takes vanilla android, which I’d say is the next best thing to iOS, and completely bastardizes it. Not only that, but it comes with 20+ applications that can’t be uninstalled. Stuff like NFL and Amazon apps in addition to a half dozen carrier apps. Samsung defenders will say you can root it for the best experience, except Samsung’s new security software prevents that. A jailbroken iPhone is better anyday. Sure it has 4 gig of Ram, but Samsung can’t even seem to optimize that to work faster than an iPhone.

Everyone in this comment section seem to hate eachother but I don’t really understand why, like all of you enjoy tech that us why you are reading this and even if you don’t like tech your alowed to read. I see these sort of arguments between android fans and apple fans all the time and usually it scares me voicing my opinions. Like right now I’m not even going to mention my platform of choice because I’m afraid of the roasting I will get

    • Paul Andrew Dixon - 9 years ago

This is called 9 to 5 MAC <— this means it is about apple stuff… so even though most people on this site likes tech, most of them like apple…
If you are interested in google/android — go to 9 to 5 google (although this might have been posted on there too)… there will always been apple lovers and android lovers…

personally…i think each to their own – – a phone is not just a phone anymore, we all use it for different things – some for calling, some for texting, some for internet, some for gaming, some for social networking, some for business etc… my family prefer android because it has cheaper phone options (their words, not mine)…i have tried their phones and if i just wanted to use chrome, maybe facebook, and a few lite games – then id be ok – a part from that i just didnt get on with it…so i use iOS – it works for me…
But i have friends who like windows – and i even have a friend who loves blackberry… <–i dont try to convert them or complain or insult them… after all, i can still reach them via phone, email, facebook etc…

What works best for one person can be different to another person… as for specs and crap – that's a while other argument…lol

  30. leifashley - 9 years ago

They should give them away… that would make them priced appropriately…

  31. Paul Andrew Dixon - 9 years ago

Awww…bless them for trying… people who queue up on launch day are people who are core fans that already knew they wanted this before it came out — these are not the ideal people to try and offer phones too…

however, trying to give them free cushions etc is a clever way to get free advertisement from people snapping photos and taking videos etc…

But again, to be honest, if i were a hardcore fan waiting outside an apple store and someone was giving out free stuff – id expect them to have apple logos on, otherwise i wont be interested because my focus on the day would be apple…

It was a nice idea…a good attempt…but not well thought through, and failed in the end

  32. primematrix - 9 years ago

“…in billionth place, are Apple fans so dedicated that they’ve queued up outside an Apple Store to buy the shiny new iPhone 6s. ” Awesome statement.

  33. nightskysurfer - 9 years ago

I’m wondering if anyone (i.e. Apple buyer in line) did anything fun with the Samsung gear–slapping another label on it, changing the hash tag, making something out of the stuff…

Something that would point out the absurdity of it all!

Perhaps having a trash can brought and having each Apple buyer drop their Samsung stuff into the can! Or, passing it back down the line (where it keeps accumulating until it ends up in a big pile at the end). Or, some such. (OK, I’m not being particularly creative here, but you get my drift.)

It would make a riot of a counter-video, especially if Samsung tried to pretend queued Apple buyers switched allegiance.

Now, if they were giving out raffle tickets or FREE Samsung phones to get out of the line…

Well, take it, sell it, and get back in line. Your iPhone would then be free!

  34. tyshep12 - 9 years ago

Two things here seem to be horrible logic to me…
#1) People waiting in lines somehow have to work in order to pay for the phones, right? I mean frankly I would rather work or go to my college classes than wait severs days for a new iPhone. I can just order it from Verizon and it shows up at my door step a few weeks later. I would hope that people have better things to do than waiting in line for an iPhone.
#2) People who do wait in line for an iPhone must be extremely dedicated to getting that iPhone. So as far as samsungs thoughts on why they’re trying to convert people who have their minds made up… Just makes them look stupid and desperate. It reminds me of people trying to cram their religions down others throats at a gathering of a different religion. Just makes you look stupid and it annoys everyone else.
Finally, what’s really strange to me, is why people care so much about what platforms others choose. It’s a fucking cell phone get the hell over it! I chose apple. Yes I know how to use just about any other platform there is, but I chose Apple because I like their products better. Anyways, I do find the whole android vs iOS war quite bizarre and just a waste of energy.

  35. HAS ANYONE EVEN NOTICED IT WASNT SAMSUNG TRYING TO SELL THEIR PHONES IT WAS CAR PHONE WAREHOUSE THAT HIRED PEOPLE TO GO STAND THERE ,, NOTHING TO DO WITH SAMSUNG ,,

  36. thats like trying to hit on someone while they are on a date, with someone else, pathetic.

  37. so desperate
