Apple releases iOS 9.2 beta 4 with NumberSync, Arabic Siri support, & more

FullSizeRender

Just a week after the last version, Apple has released iOS 9.2 beta 4 to testers for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The first iOS 9.2 beta appeared alongside Xcode 7.2 beta in late October. We’ll dive into the latest beta and update with any changes we discover.

iOS 9 beta 4

Included in the release up to this point has been an improved Safari View Controller for web links you open within other apps, support for AT&T’s new NumberSync feature for using your iPhone number on other connected devices (although this has since been removed), and Arabic language support with Siri for the first time.

For non-developers and users not using public beta versions, iOS 9.1 is the latest version of the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch software. Released last month, that update included more than 150 new emoji characters, improvements to Live Photos on iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, tweaked wallpapers, and more.

Public beta testers can also access the latest iOS 9.2 beta 4. The corresponding OS X 10.11.2 beta 4 hit the Mac App Store for developers and public beta testers yesterday.

  1. I cannot get NumberSync working for my AT&T phone with beta 2,3,or now 4. I have WiFi calling enabled however I get no option to add a other devices. Is anyone else having this issue or and suggestion to get it working. Thanks, Cory

Hey Cory, looks like it was removed during beta 3 and hasn’t returned yet. I’d guess this will return in early 2016.

I got it to work once with this beta with the iPhone turned off from my iMac. Now i can not get it to work after trying to see if it would using my iPad as a wifi hotspot. The preferences is still in the latest OS X to use NumberSync when your phone isn’t near by.

Turning the iPhone off and reconnecting to my home wifi I’m still able to make calls with the iPhone turned off. I don’t have another wifi network nearby to see if it just works with my home wifi or any wifi.

What about the Health app glitch? There’s lots of noise about this on the apple forums and I’ve had it since the latest version of iOS. What’s the point of health app and having an Apple Watch if I cannot sync or record my health data?

    • taoprophet420 - 8 years ago

Whats the point of having Health app at all with the current Apple Watch? It really doesn’t record health data, its all fitness based information.

      • Jack Donaghy - 8 years ago

First, Health data need not come from an Apple Watch. I have a whole year’s worth of Health data from before I owned an Apple Watch – including sleep data, respiration data, nutrition data, and weight and BMI data. There are lots of people out there with important data on things like glucose readings, period data, and blood pressure readings who rely on Health to keep this stuff safe.

Second, fitness data *is* health data. My heart rate information, combined with context such as whether I was walking, running, sleeping etc, is one indicator of my overall health.

We’re yet to see any apps which make Health a truly killer feature of the iPhone – but people who are recording this stuff now will have a reasonable head start for when the predictive big health data apps do become widespread. I’m pretty mad that Apple has effectively lost a year’s worth of my health data after I recently restored my iCloud backup, and I really hope I can get it back.

What about the black keyboard bug on quick reply? is it fixed?

On betas 3 & 4 (perhaps earlier?) having Wi-Fi Calling enabled causes almost all SMS messages report a sending failure. From what I could tell, about half actually failed.

I’ve only seen this happen with Numbersync enabled. I have Wi-Fi calling enabled (in both beta 3, and now 4) and I have had no problems with regular SMS since they disabled NumberSync in beta 3. I would assume that this, and other bugs, are the reasons that NumberSync was disabled.

      • jorn - 8 years ago

Chris, I think you have a point there. I had NumberSync enabled, although it does appear to be gone. But, if it’s gone, why am (was) I still seeing this issue on this and the last beta? So confused. ;)

What happened to the concept of iOS 9 bringing smaller updates? Yes, I realize this is Beta stuff – but man….these last few Betas have been massive…1.6GB on average… Are they pushing out basically a nearly-totals OS with each Beta update?

I was able to install on my iPhone without issue, but my iPad has been in the “Update Requested” state for about 4 days now. I tried removing and adding the profile again but that did nothing, along with a few other “idiot checks”. Any ideas on how to resolve this?
