iOS 9.3 public beta + 9.3 dev beta 1.1 w/ Night Shift, Touch ID Notes, more now available

iOS 9.3 3D Touch

The public beta version of iOS 9.3 for non-developer testers is now available. The first iOS 9.3 beta was first released earlier this week to registered developers and includes a number of new mid-cycle features and enhancements. These include secure passwords and Touch ID protection for Notes, a new Night Shift feature to adjust display temperate in the evening, and expanded 3D Touch quick actions on the latest iPhones. iOS 9.3 Beta 1.1 is also available for registered developers.

iOS 9.3 beta 1.1 resolves an issue several testers experienced during installation. Check out our full coverage of iOS 9.3 and other betas released earlier this week below:

Is the build number of the public beta the same as the number of the dev beta 1.1 or is it the dev beta 1?

Why 3D Touch Menu in settings app shows repeated functions found in control center like Bluetooth and wifi. Makes no sense. Are them
    Toggles or something more?

Control center uses Bluetooth, WiFi etc. as toggles. The 3D Touch on the Settings app actually jumps to the settings where you can connect/ disconnect to WiFi networks or Bluetooth. They offer different functionality.

Beta back to being 1.6 GB after the last 9.2.1 beta was small like any ota update.

Every X.x.x releases is small but the X.x is usually a full download since they have changed so much in the code. At least that is how I’ve seen it when I pay attention to the downloads. I would like to play with this new beta but since I only have my primary device I’m not so sure I want to. But another part of me says to get back in the public beta since I ame one of the users that that uses accessibility features of the phone and know how to do bug reporting. They really don’t have enough esters in that section and there seems to always be bugs in the release for assability becouse of it.

Also I really wish even non beta testers could get that feedback app. It makes reporting so much easyer when a final release is out.

If 9.3 public bats is already out what happend to 9.2.1? Makes no sence to me we usually have the release befor the next version goes to public beta.

It’s not uncommon for Apple to have a small point release and a larger release in beta at the same time. I think it happened a few months ago, too. Several times before that, as well.

Does anyone know why there’s not Night Shift feature on iPhone 5?

  6. Dil Ribeiro - 8 years ago

I don’t know why but I can’t activate the Touch ID on Notes

  7. Has anyone else noticed that Notes on iCloud.com is not loading since the release of ios 9.3?

Note sure if anyone else saw this but you can swipe left on stories in the News App now to Like, Save, Share. You can long swipe left too to automatically share. Makes it a bit quicker.

Just FYI – the 9.3 beta temporarily bricked my iPad Air 1. I had to perform a full restore back to 9.2.1. I’m not complaining, just informing.

OH MY GOD- my second most requested iOS feature (after Flux) has also been partially added in this beta, at least based on the screenshot used for this post. we have needed quicker access to things like wi-fi, battery, and bluetooth. This will be a huge help, however I think it’s a poor imitation.
With Apple’s 9.3 method I will basically need to have Settings app in my bottom 4-row to have easy access, and in addition, this only saves me navigating 1 menu page in the settings app.
The much more obvious way to implement this is to allow force press in the notification center. If doing my method it would work as follows:
    1. Force press on wi-fi lets you select which wi-fi to connect to.
    2. Force press on Bluetooth lets you choose which device to connect or disconnet to.
    3. Force press on DoNotDisturb (Moon icon) let’s you choose battery’s low power mode + battery settings shortcut.
    4. Force press on Timer let’s you also select Alarm.

The only reason I would currently see them not doing this is
    A) maybe it’s hard to implement the wi-fi and bluetooth ping beacon without being a battery drain.
And B) My method would somewhat break the “3-layer” deep design philosophy that Apple added in iOS7. For example, the current force-touch pop-overs seem like a top layer (same as control/notification center”), so you wouldn’t want a top-layer modal over a top layer slide (control-center).
The simple work around would be to have the top-layer force-touch modal be a part of the “top-layer” not above it. Maybe something that slides further up from the notification center. To me this is the exact kind of scenario where I see ForceTouch as really useful.
Ever find out your wifi is slow because you’re on the airport wi-fi not the starbucks one? Or connect to your car bluetooth instead of your headphones?

That’s just some ideas that I think would really improve the OS experience, and a better way they could do it. With that said, I’m glad we can at least save one Settings-menu screen swipe with this method in 9.3.

Another note on adding detailed settings option in the notification enter- I just noticed the frustration that I can’t do this on an iPad, including an iPad Pro. Really a LONG press might be better use for these top-level control center settings. That way it would work on all devices. I would love if I could switch netflix to my bluetooth speakers without leaving the netflix app, but just by swiping up. Currently you have to hit home, find your settings app, find the bluetooth setting, and then select from a list.

***** Public Beta users BEWARE! *****

I installed the Public Beta on my iPhone 6s and I have been experiencing massive battery drain. Did a full overnight charge with an official Apple charger, took it off the charger at 9am and just used it to view a few apps. Drained to 30% by 11am.

    ***BATTERY HOT***

The back of the iPhone is extremely hot now. I have reported the issue to Apple via the feedback and sent my reports. Downgrading and removing the public beta now.

    BE WARNED!
