Instagram adds official support for multiple accounts on iOS

Instagram Official Multiple Accounts

Instagram today has officially announced support for mutliple accounts. After a slow roll out to multiple users, users are now able to add up to 5 different Instagram accounts and quickly switch between them all. Multiple account support has been added as of Instagram’s 7.15 version for iOS.

If a user would like to add multiple Instagram accounts, they can do so by going to the options page, and selecting ‘Add Account’ at the bottom. Once added, a user can switch between the various accounts by selecting the username at the top of the screen and selecting the other account they wish to use.

The way Instagram handles notifications for multiple accounts is a little different here as well. They indicate that the notifications “depends on when you last logged in and the number of devices that are logged in to an account”. From our understanding, this could indicate that users won’t receive all push notifications for all accounts, which may help converse battery life on a user’s device.

With the addition of multiple accounts, third-party Instagram applications may have a harder time competing on attractive features and the risk of user data harvesting may decrease. More information on multiple account usage may be found in Instagram’s official Help Center.

It appears that this feature is still rolling out to users and that Instagram may have to enable it on their end before the ‘Add Account’ option is seen. At the time of this writing I do not see it enabled on my account, but be sure to let us know in the comments if you do.

Instagram is available for free from the App Store and is compatible with iPhones running iOS 7.0 or higher.

Based on my last post in regards to the slow roll out, it looks like some users were already seeing it. I was hoping today’s official announcement would indicate everyone had it enabled. Doesn’t appear to be the case.

I think it’s still technically beta. They “officially” announced it, but not “officially” released it. 😎

Their post says “Starting this week” so I’d expect it to be available for you by Friday.

        Actually, it just popped up!

now they just need to make an iPad version of the app.

    • You can say that again. Wait, you did. ;) Instagram is funny. It’s a 1-man class app maintained by an army of developers and multi-million-dollar budget, yet the roll out anything significant at a glacial pace that makes the development of OSX seem like it was done overnight.

Deleted my instagram app and re-installed it. Now I have it!!

Just uninstall the application and download it again from the App Store and appears in the settings “add account” ;-)

    • No dice. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times now. No “add account” appears. WTF’s going on Instagram…this feature isn’t made available en masse. I tried creating even a totally new account – nope, no dice.

I have the add account feature showing up but will not allow me to add.

Just used it. Love it so far!

  8. I’m getting frustrated because I still don’t have this feature. I’m running Instagram version 7.17.1 now, because I’ve received additional updates. I’m on an iPhone 6s running the latest iOS. Given that I manage the social media for my work as well as personal accounts, I was really looking forward to this feature. I’ve tried deleting and reinstalling the app, and still the feature is not there.

This is really weird. I finally got it a few days after this article was published. What OS are you running? I keep wondering if it’s only on certain OSes too. Maybe you can reach out to their support team?

I don’t have it on my iPhone6 yet either. I thought it was because I had it set up for two accounts on my iPad so I deleted one but still do not have the option for 2 accounts on my iPhone 6. I have ISO 9.2.1 and my Instagram is up to day (7.17.1)

i dont have it on my iphone 6s yet either. i have deleted an reinstalled as well. I use it for work and would love to have a personal options as well- super annoying.

I have the same problem. Multiple accounts is not available.
    7.17.1 – iOS 9.2.1 – Iphone 5

    • thebeachesmarket - 8 years ago

It says it is only available with 7.15 so anything updates after that I assume wont have the multiple account availability

  10. I don’t have it either. I’ve sent several support requests to no avail. It seems their support doesn’t exist. Anyone else have any luck reaching @instagram support?

I had multiple accounts before, but had to delete the app to clear its data and cache. After I reinstalled the app, not only I have no “add account” option, I no longer have “clear search history” or “logout” option either. Re-starting iphone, re-deleting and re-installing numerous times didn’t help. I have no idea what happened and how to fix it. My iOS is 9.3 and instagram is 7.19

I have the add account button but when I click it and it goes to the page to enter new page name and password it says it’s not recognized with my user ( well it’s new account ) unsure what to do

  13. I still do not have the ability to add another account (my new German shepherd puppy). And Instagram’s help center is a joke. Or, I should say, non-existent.
