Apple makes progress on Campus 2 solar panels, R&D facility, auditorium & more in latest flyover [Video]

Since last checking in a month ago, today Duncan Sinfield gives us an update on progress at Apple’s under construction Campus 2 in his latest drone flyover video of the site.

In the video, we see Apple’s progress in recent weeks including the continuation of the installation of the giant glass panels — the largest in the world — on the main building, as well as preparations for installing the nearly 700,000 sq. ft. of rooftop solar panels that will be on the site when complete.

We also see some progress made on the structures surrounding the main circular building, including the 100,000 sq. ft fitness center, the exterior of the underground auditorium entrance, the separate R&D facility, and the two parking garage facilities that will hold around 10,980 parking spaces.

Apple is still expected to complete construction on the site by the end of the year, but it recently extended its schedule for street utilities, originally thought to be completed at the end of 2014, through 2016 in its general project schedule on the City of Cupertino’s website (below).

If Apple finishes on schedule, it could start moving in the roughly 13,000 employees the new 2.8 million sq ft headquarters will hold by early 2017. And indeed Cook said at a recent shareholders meeting that the campus should be ready within the expected timeframe.

The timeline webpage is simply brilliant; 9to5 is the only site that has this, as far as I know. Really great!

9to5Mac never reported on 2 of the contractors getting the boot do to delays and not meeting deadlines, they just kept posting drone fotageand ignored Apple switching to a 3rd contractor to finish the project.

You guys have constantly said the campus and move would happen in 2016. Tim hinted at Spring 2017 for move in.

I’m working on a huge project in Brussels ‘Chambon’ which is a 250m€ project with loft houses, 280 appartments, a hotel, offices, etc. which is a huge project and is very challenging due to the size of it of course.

So I know how challenging projects of this size are, and from the videos I’ve seen over the last couple of months, it seems the construction is moving quite along. They construction really seems to be moving along quite well so congrats for that too.

I wonder how much Apple is involved in the construction of the building, I hope Jony doesn’t take too much credit for the design of the building because in the last video he said they use the longest curved glass in the world so that the view towards the landscape wouldn’t be interrupted. Believe me this comes from the architect himself, Norman Foster.

Forgot to mention the obvious, this Apple Campus project is of course much bigger. 3b$ project I heard. Still sounds inexpensive for such a huge project…

I had no idea that there was a vehicle tunnel on the interior courtyard
