More 3G Code found in iPhone SDK

Although it is beyond obvious at this point, it is still nice to have some confirmation that the next iPhone will be 3G.  Today 9to5Mac has it.  Looking in the latest iPhone SDK Preferences application, we find references to both EDGE and 3G Networking.

...which compares to EDGE code found further along in the file.

GPS?

I want to see the GPS too.....

no gps

maybe google maps triangulation works so well, or at least well enough to keep people happy, that they're not going to give it gps?

GPS is useful when your out

4033

GPS is useful when your out in the woods, I mean triangulation is nice as long as you have somewhere a cell phone tower and it works great in the city in contrast to most GPS - but when you are traveling let's say in Yellowstone and you would like to know where the hell you are a GPS is better in this situation. So the iPhone should be smart enough to use the best possible choice to locate you and find the next available gas station in 50 miles or in more urban areas where the hell is the next Starbucks ?

Smart power on/off to GPS unit?

3732

Is it so far-fetched to think that the GPS in the iPhone will only activate when certain apps turn it on, such as the Maps application? This would save on talk-time, while keeping the feature available.

Why the speculation about 3G, we've already be told it's coming!

3328

Really the subject says it all. I mean great somebody found info highlighting what we already know, that is that 3G is coming. People would be better off looking for stuff that hasn't been acknowledged by the powers to be.

GPS would be one of them. Full Bluetooth support another, or at least indications of many more profiles. Support for memory cards or USB host mode would be great finds too. Nope instead we got people getting all excited about something we have already been told is coming. STRANGE!

I don't mean to be cruel but give us some real dirt!

When will people figure out

3736

When will people figure out that memory card support will never happen? Listen, Steve-O doesn't *want* you to be able to expand the device. For one thing, Apple knows what's best for you, so they offer all the storage you need right now (this is only half-mocking; Apple really does know its target audience *quite* well). And two, if it's expandable, how will they ever sell you the newest & most cutting edge model?

Dream on for that sh*t, cuz it's coming right *after* the new Newton.

We don't really know that much...

3129

We do know that a 3G iPhone is coming at some point, but we aren't sure if it is coming in June with the 2.0 software release. Anything we *know* at this point is just speculation that the 2.0 software release will come with a 2.0 hardware release... this article is putting a lot more weight behind that speculation. For all we know, the 2.0 software could come out in June and the 3G iPhone hardware could come out in December. But it isn't looking likely. That is why people hunt for this stuff, write an article about it, and get excited about reading the articles about it.

are you blind?

8737

uh you must be blind sir. Its already been stated that is coming out June 9th... maybe you should read a bit more?????

Hey doc.  Who stated

3035

Hey doc.  Who stated that?  A journalist from IDG?  Hardly official I'd say.

who cares about gps?

3429

Honestly.... who cares about GPS? Do the majority of consumers want this? I don't think so. It'd be a waste of money and batteries.

Who says?

3330

yea, who says that it will com on june 9th? that's just the beginning of WWDC, it could come in from 9-13, or even later. and if they do announce it, that is just an announcement, not a publishing. if they are announced at WWDC, they will probably hit stores in july.
iphone FTW!

GPS!

Why on earth would you not want them to add gps support. GPS won't drain a single kilowatt if you don't use it. but when your hot date you find on vacation (yeah right) wants some sushi, you will be thanking pineapple that you had the gps in there. not to mention the third party app possibilities, such as Phone recovery.
Imagine sending a text to your phone with "where are you?" and the phone replying via e-mail or whatever.. with a Google map link where your phone is. and the gps would only turn on to fetch the coords ( 10 secs for a fix maybe? ). this all assuming you didn't leave the phone in a basement. =)

On a side note, i hope iphone v2 decides not to use 1990's tech and upgrade from the 2 megapixel cam... hell, my niece has some barbie POS photo cam thing for 20 bucks that does 4
