New iPhones to come in 4, 8, 16, 32GB varieties?

Engadget's sources say that new iPhones will come in just about every size imaginable.

...we're hearing from a trusted source that new iPhones in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities just garnered approval by the PCS Type Review Certification Board, the standards body responsible for certificating handsets for use with some carriers (AT&T, for instance)

Wow.  If so, that 4GB model is going to have a low starting price point.  That might make the Androids and Pres a harder sell.

Yeah!

3327

If that is true then I know at least 3 people who wants the 4GB version :D

exactly!

2542

no one would want a 4 gig model!
whats the point of having a device that's capable of holding music movies photos apps (basically your life) and not have enough space for all???
8 gigs is enough for me and i have many apps photos, music and some vids. 4 gigs will just be a pain in the *** and not a good starting point for apple.

People who don't have that

2628

People who don't have that much music, video and photos and maybe only get some few apps don't want to pay that much for an iPhone...

Sorry, cousin, but I think

2627

Sorry, cousin, but I think you're wrong here. There are plenty of people who want to have an iPhone even if it's 4GB's. Lots of people love the idea of having a phone but don't have that much music, let alone any videos or movies.

Also, think about how many people buy the 8GB nano and it doesn't fit all their music. That's what makes iTunes and the iPhone/iPod so cool. You can swap music and other media as often and as easily as possible.

Trust me, 4GB is a good way to go and it speaks to the comments Apple's Senior leadership made about not leaving a price umbrella out there for others to make their way into.

Nice move, Apple.

Just my humble 2 cents.

thats the point. its going to

2530

thats the point. its going to allow the iphone to be cheaper and more expensive at the same time. you go in for the $100, but the 8 gig is only 50 more, the 16 50 more than that... pretty smart if you ask me, guy

sorry, but i dont see that

3735

sorry, but i dont see that happening. All the leaks and hints of the new iPhone never specified 4 GB and 8 GB models. Just 16 GB and 32 GB.

4 gig is NOT GOOD!

3446

no one would want a 4 gig model, because only the apps take a lot of space...and what about movies, photos, music? the base model should be an 8 gig model, giving enough space for a normal iphone user.

It's for all

3438

The 4GB version will allow people who couldn't normally afford an iPhone to have one, not everyone needs a massive amount of storage, I have a 16GB iPhone but only use about 6GB and that could easily be trimmed to 4GB if I needed to.

Not everyone wants every app available and the 4GB option will bring the iPhone to a wider demographic which can only be a good thing!

So if this is true it will

3739

So if this is true it will also mean that the current 1 year old 8GB model will sell for $199, that's kind of crazy if you ask me.

I for one think a 4gig model

4138

I for one think a 4gig model makes sense. Given Apple wants to be the phone for everyone. And with Apple having agreements with Walmart and Best Buy this makes for good marketing. An iPhone for everyone! starting at just $129.00. Production goes up, marketing share goes up and production cost/unit goes down. And the positive PR... look for a 4,8,16,32 in the near future!

Like Jim Reekes the designer

3538

Like Jim Reekes the designer of many default sounds in Mac mashines put it "Who wants to watch a two hour movie on a 3 inch display? How long can you hold it up in front of your face?". I think that is a general consensus amongst a lot of iPod/iPhone users, like it or not, and maybe people don't want to show off their pictures everywhere they go, or if they do they keep them on their laptop (which the last time I looked is also portable and fits perfectly in your backpack).

People who has an average amount of music, has the average need for apps and uses their phone for that and the basics (phone, sms-texting and contact information) would fit perfectly into the 4 gig category. For us nerds, graphic designers, people with a huge library of music, there's more roomy options for us. Also, the iPod classic is still a hot buy if you ask me.

I would be disappointed if they (based on this source) priced the 8 gig at the current $199; especially if they introduced a 16 gig and a 32 gig iPhone. I think, based on the horrible sales Apple has seen in India that they're going for the not so roomy models as a way to sell cheaper iPhones and still only have one line of phones that run apps equally fast. Would love to see the 4 gig go for $59, the 8 gig to go for $109, the 16 gig go for the $199 we see the 8 gig go for now and the 32 gig at around $249. That (to me) would be reasonable.

Weren't there predictions of

3540

Weren't there predictions of a stripped 4Gb, ie edge only, no GPS, keep the curretn 2.0 megapixel-no autofocus camera? (Can't remember if the rumor/prediction left bluetooth in or not, I think it did.)

4 gb is ok

4025

Photos is stored on sites like Flickr- so 0GB
Video is stored on sites like Vimeo or YouTube - so 0 GB
Music- has to be stored so 4 gb is enough for 1,000 songs x 3 min each = 50 hours of music so 4 gb is ok for most people.

I would love to see this

3129

I would love to see this lineup:

8GB iPhone @ $99 with a 2 Year Contract

16GB iPhone @ $199 with a 2 Year Contract

32GB iPhone @ $299 with a 2 Year Contract

That should lock it up for Apple.

I just don't see a 4GB model. The 8GB model hardly sold that well. Everyone I know wanted the 16GB model. But in order to undercut the Pre and the Android phones I could see a $99 8GB model selling like hotcakes to buyers sitting on the fence trying to decide which phone is for them.

Where did you get your info

2524

Where did you get your info that the 8gb barely sold? I would like to see the numbers on that.

Just about everyone I know who bought an iphone (except me and one other friend) bought the 8gb. Its like cars BMW 328 is the volume seller but the 335 has a better profit margin.

I fairly certain if you ran the numbers the 8gb has outsold the 16gb.

Most people just want to get in the door.

I do agree though a 4gb is not needed since memory is much cheaper now they can give away the 8 for what the 4 would be selling for.

Apple Press Release

2027

Those are all the new prices as of today!

4gb not so bad?

2823

Personally I want at least 16gb. That being said I could see my mom getting a 4gb

Maybe they are planning on

3222

Maybe they are planning on allowing streaming content from iTunes over 3g. If so, 4gb would be sufficient for storing your apps/contacts etc..

4gb sounds like to little of space!

2432

The title says it all!

Go away

2625

Go away.

Calm Down

2723

Man calm down I don't think he said anything bad. There is no reason to be mean 9to5mac is a peaceful loving place where everyone is free to say what ever they want to say :)

the title does say it all :)

2628

Your right the title does say it all! Happy Birthday, Everyone, who birthday is today. Go apple!

I can see some people wanting

3023

I can see some people wanting the 4Gb phone 'cos they don't care about all the iTunes stuff. Not everyone (I'm so going to get flack for this) has ripped their entire CD and DVD collection to iTunes, so they don't need gigs and gigs of space. I know people who are interested in the decent browser, calendar and other built-in apps (and visual voicemail) and would happily buy the iPhone just for those, but have been put off because of the relatively high price compared to other phones. A 4Gb phone would be ideal for people who don't care about music, but want a decent on-the-go browser experience. Maybe in the future they'll see the benefit of the iPod side of things, and upgrade to a larger 5th gen device, but for now they'd quite happily just use it as a smart phone.

I just want a cheap iphone in

2227

I just want a cheap iphone in asia. In thailand there's no such thing as contracts that pay for price of phone. They just charge you on a monthly installment. I would prefer a phone I can buy outright that's under $500.

perfect for businesses

2629

All the management at my job just got iPhones and the 4GB would have been perfect for them. They are not allowed to load them up with "fun" apps, let alone music or movies. Cost is still an issue for a lot of people, especially these days, and a lower entry-level iPhone is perfect timing. NOw if we could just get AT&T to lower the monthly plan I could get my wife one too.

I have friends now who have

3124

I have friends now who have had the 3g for over 6 months and never even sync'd the damn thing. There are plenty of people out there that 2g would be good enough (although I think thats a waste of the phone).

I on the other hand cant wait for 32g, my 16g is full now and I am constantly pulling stuff off it.

As of yet i dont really see

2624

As of yet i dont really see anything that would make me resign a contract with crappy att. new camera.... meh itll suck like all camera phones. compass.... whos gives a shit? cars got a gps! faster processer.... dont give a shit! itll still drop calls like it is its job!

ATT can go to hell with their fastest network BS..... fastest to drop calls!

Go to Sprint!

2723

Go to Sprint!

i.e. hell. It was for me ...

Go to sprint? WTF!

2125

Sprint Suck a55. Moving on I have been waiting for more space on the iPhone for two year. So hopefully all the rumors are true. I wont be standing in line for 8 hours this time, I will just wait until I catch one at the apple store. At&t ran out of phones in 30 minutes last year.
