Insiders tell us that Apple expects to announce sales of roughly five million iPhones at Macworld 2008 in January. Of these, around one million are expected to come from Europe. Apple is seeing very strong Christmas sales despite AT&T's announcement that a 3G iPhone will be hitting in 2008 (May-June is our best guess at this point) that could've hampered demand.
Apple sold 1 million iPhones in 74 days around the same time it dropped the price to $399 from $599. Also, Apple opened in Europe's three biggest markets in November - just in time for the holidays.
Some sources expect Apple to release a 16Gb iPhone upgrade at Macworld in mid January, however, no hard evidence to this effect has hit our ears.
Apple had originally expected to sell 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008 and reaching the halfway point this early is likely to bolster Apple's stock price. Apple's iPhone is a leader in the smartphone charge in the US and has gained marketshare at an unprecedented pace.

Because america is not the
Because america is not the center of the world and in some part of the earth it can be 7:43pm when it's 10:43am where you live.... Let say for example... Paris ? :-)
Stop Arguing !!!
Stop arguing and buy iPhones. We'll never hit the five million mark if you don't chip in. Jerry Lewis wants you to buy an iPhone to help save a starving child in another time zone.

Shit! America's not the
Shit! America's not the center of the world? It must be thus eye-ranians fault! Let's nuke them!
You're an idiot.
You're an idiot.
You state that Apple
You state that Apple projected to sell 10M units by the end of 2008.
This is incorrect.
Steven Jobs said they expected to sell 10M in the 2008 calendar year. So these 5 million would not count toward that goal, but merely reflect that they are on track to meet or exceed their stated projection.
This number is based on what Steve Jobs said in the keynote address at MacWorld when the iPhone was announced, and was corroborated by Tim Cook in the 1Q06 conference call last year when Gene Munster asked for clarification on that figure.
At any rate, this suggests that 50% more iPhones will be sold by the end of next year than you imply in this article.
That is a common
That is a common misunderstanding...

No... you are the one that
No... you are the one that is incorrect. But I can hardly blame you.
When Apple unleashed the iPhone, their only quote was "We want to have sold 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008." Since that time I have seen numerous interpretations put forth by the media.
• The correct one: "10 million phones between the launch and Dec 31, 2008"
• The most common one: "10 millions phones between Jan 1, 2008 and Dec 31, 2008"
• "10 million phones between Oct 1, 2007 and Oct 1, 2008 (Apple's FY2008)"
• "10 million phones between July 2007 and July 2008 (the iPhone's first year)"
If you go back and listen to
If you go back and listen to the Keynote from MacWorld 2007 you will find that Steve said "10 million in 2008"
i find this a completely
i find this a completely irresponsible article.... no sources were cited and by all estimates from analysts this 5M number is way over the top.....
These kinds of poor stories are designed to set expectations high so that it will seem that Apple didn't meet them when Earnings are reported in Q108.
Please take these wild rumours with a serious dose of Salt! -- and best ignore them...

Stated: "Apple is very,
Stated:
"Apple is very, very, careful about any kind of predictions. They also have years of experience at exactly this sort of device creation, marketing and sales of of said device(s), and know this market better than anyone. "
While Apple is incredibly good at the device design and creation, iPhone was still a risky move into unknown territory. Jobs & Co, could have had no certainty on the market acceptance - only hopes.
My guess is that the 10 million for 2008 was towards the low end of what they would consider a successful product launch - a figure they felt quite confident that they could make. Remember, at launch, they did not even have European carriers signed up (as far as we can tell.) My guess is that they would really like to see 15-20 million sold in the year, depending on the ability to get off in other markets.

young man, come to San Francisco in January with an open spirit and you will leave at peace with your new future
Wowm 5 million iphones sold
Wowm 5 million iphones sold already? How much profit did they make off of that? I know the statistics for how much profit they make off of an ipod touch, but haven't seen the iphone statistics yet :/
For the real projections,
For the real projections, ask the folks on Wallstreet. Apple has consistentely been below projections, hence the price drop, the early release in Europe, the release in Europe of unlocked iPhones. Their projections and expectations were WAY too high.
Despite the media and the Jobs love affair, Apple is begging people to buy iPhones. The number they want to hit is 45 Million in 2009. To put things in perspective, for every iPhone sold, RIM sells 4 blackberries. And Nokia sold 50 million phones in China this year. Apple is still a very, very small fish in the cell phone world. Welcome to reality, hows that for an iPhone commercial? Maybe the "i" should stand for "idoit" since thats the target market for Apple. Its all the users who can't figure out the other PDAs.
Wow, get with it, the times
Wow, get with it, the times they are a changing and you sound like an old man
defending his piss poor old tech smart phone. I hope you don't own stock in BBE because the only way you will make any money is if cash rich Apple buys it.

1. You compared Apple,
1. You compared Apple, which has a one-product phone like, with nokia, who only sells phones, and blackberry, which also only sells phones. I'd hope they were outselling Apple, if they weren't, I'd wonder why anyone invests in their stock.
2. The unlocked iphones in Europe are required by law, they're not some ploy by apple. Come on, thats a stupid argument anywhere, they're massively overpriced and certainly not selling like hotcakes.
3. Have you used a Palm device? Its like they had a bunch of monkies design their interface. Its ugly. Windows Mobile looks a little nicer, but comes at the cost of an OS thats a memory hog, has massive multitasking issues, and is crash-happy. I haven't heard these things about the iPhone, its certainly pretty, and the general consensus seems to be its very useable and stable. Apple has their finger on the pulse of user-oriented GUI design. And thats what translates to sales. Its not being too stupid. Its that when something is easier, you're more productive. Bottom Line.
4. Kinda hard to quip at people for being idiots when you screwed your facts up several times, and then misspelled the word idiot.
You do realize how
You do realize how unbelievably HUGE the handset market is don't you?
You don't have to be anywhere near the top to make some serious scratch, especially when your device is so desirable that the carriers are bending over backwards to SHARE THEIR REVENUE with you. You really only need 10 percent of the market in that case, and your recurring profit will make Nokia's little kick-backs look like chicken feed.
I'm still stuck on this
I'm still stuck on this whole "America's not the center of the world" thing- didn't we liberate the French from the Nazi's? And Didn't we save Europe? We're the best country ever!
Dude really America is not
Dude really America is not center of the world , Do you really think America could of liberated Europe if Russia had not kicked Nazi ass on the east of Europe ??
Everyone know's hitler lost because he attacked Russia and was unable to sustain war with two counties at a time.
So just for the record America alone didnt liberate Europe, if there was going to be no Russian threat the Nazi's would of kicked ass
DUDE!!! Everyone knows,
DUDE!!! Everyone knows, but can't admit that Ammrrrca is the center of the world. To say otherwise is just so 15th century. Those same people probably still think the Sun revolves around the Earth. Russia? What did they do, snow on them? Please, Ammrrrca had more fatboys waiting if the Nazis didn't surrender. There'd be no Europe if there were no Ammrrrca.
If Ammrrrca wasn't the center of the world there'd be no movies, music, iphones, happiness, internet, youtube, global warming....wait, that doesn't exist....there'd be no sunsine, puppies, TVs, or corndogs. What kind of world would that be? No place I'd want to live for sure.
I guess you dont know
I guess you dont know history, they didnt snow them down they fought them and thats why they were first to take over Berlin.
And europeans made USA so if there were no Europeans there was going to be no USA cuz usa is filled with european immigrants thats it :P
Cuz the natives of America are Red Indians. Go read history
It seems that you have not
It seems that you have not travelled outside US. Travel across Europe, you would never say that "We're the best country ever!".
Of course not. The jealous
Of course not. The jealous natives would probably string you up.
If this is true ist a big
If this is true ist a big chunk of growing markt share for apple in mobiles. Other vendors might be freaking out now.
I''m waiting for 3G phone in Asutralia.
Man, lets have it,
Man, lets have it, already. Bring on the 3G and the speed. AT&T sucks so much with 2.5G. If Apple gets over the couple big complaints, the iPhone will dominate.
Jim, You're wrong about
Jim,
You're wrong about Apple's prediction. This is from a transcript from Apple's conference call with investors:
"Cook said that based on the demand the company has seen thus far, Apple is confident it will sell 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008."
That pretty much makes you mistaken.
Which some investment
Which some investment analysts are already expecting them to beat handly.
