as far as I undertood there would be some kind of desktop sharing/viewing app included in ichat so that you could help others out over a wan. like you this would mean i could help my dad out more easily
its correct, that the screen sharing app is not located in /Applications, but you may still start it manually in its location /System/Library/Core Services/Screen Sharing.app
when starting manually, screen sharing.app prompts the user for a hostname, which answers the question of the first comment poster (cdm), you may use it over a vpn or whatever connection you have.
both parties need to have leopard installed? It would be great for me to be able to use this on my less Mac-savvy friends / family members in a different country.
How fast is it? Does it compare to VNC or Microsoft's RDC? In all fairness, RDC is very fast and I can work remotely with hardly any lag. VNC is barely usable even over 1Mbps.
When you mean whatever connection you have does that include the internet? If so then how do you connect to a remote computer not on the local network say if I'm at my house and need to connect to my friend who is at their howse two states over? Thanks
On Apple's website, the iChat page used to show screen sharing as a new feature of that program. They've since removed the reference but you can still see the button for it in the screen shots. Can anyone confirm that screen sharing exists in the new iChat?

Thanks for the great thread!
I have ARD, but haven't looked into access my remote computers on the Internet. I'm in one state behind an Airport Express and would like to help my friends in other states via screen sharing. Can ARD do this if properly configured?
Also looking to get back into my network from Work and access my applications. Has anyone used Remote Desktop Connection from a PC to do this?
Its nice this feature is in Leopard for quick and simple use at home, but this thing is way slower then things like Timbuktu and is way less flexible then VNC, so probably only good for basic use.
I really would like to have ARD to help administer a computer that I use as a server at work, but I don't need most of the features of ARD and I don't want to pay the high cost. So, I've just been using SSH which is OK, but sometimes it would be nice to have something like this.
Most of this feature is already present in Mac OS 10.4 (and I think 10.3 as well). Apple already uses VNC protocol for screen-sharing. You just need to access it using 3rd party software, it works well.
If you Google it, you'll find the instructions, which are quite easy to follow.
when will you guys finally have the guts to tell apple legal to take a hike! it is THEIR problem if somebody is leaking photos or whatever! or, just put it up on a foreigh server and let apple try to have it taken down from, for example, the ukraine.

LAN only?
Is this feature intended/only used across a LAN? Or can you remotely connect to and control other computers on different WAN segments?
This will be a great feature for helping out my parents, without having to go to their house!

not lan only - may be started manually.

In conjunction with "back to my Mac" (.Mac)
Does this feature work with clients behind a router?
YES, like ARD

Ya if you have DMZ or port forwarding properly set up - works just like ARD
ARD, Timbuktu, Screen Sharing

Nice, but slow

How is this not a violation
How is this not a violation of a NDA?
What do you care?
What do you care?
You are only bound by an NDA
You are only bound by an NDA if you are a party to it. And you are only a party to the Leopard NDA if you received it legally.
Don't forget about logmein.com
They now have full Mac Support. I still use VNC for some things, but logmein gets me in with full control and cross platform support.
mwuhaha :P
mwuhaha :P
VLC support
Does it support VLC users too?
Sorry, not VLC, VNC
Uh... I meant VNC :P

Looking forward to trying it
I am surprised too that the screen sharing feature hasn't been discussed more. Looks like it will be very useful.
