Cnet 'stralia gets the inside information. Optus is getting the 3G iPhone. But we know Telstra is getting it too. Everybody is getting it it seems - maybe even 3 and Virgin.
Perhaps that story a month ago about all of Australia's resellers getting the iPhone was true as well. Timetable: ...wait for it..Late June, just like everyone else.
Also, Australia...Sorry for the picture, we know how much Paul Hogan is revered as a representative of your proud nation...

I think the entire Australian nation just breathed a huge sigh of relief to hear again that they won't be forced to hand over money to the utterly despised Telstra!
BTW, love the image! The Dundee phenomenon keeps on keeping on!

Thank God
Thank God for this... everyone I know is planning to get an iPhone when it comes out Down under. Now that I know I won't be locked into Telstra makes me feel a hell of alot better about my purchase. Lol, the image pwns!
Paul Hogan was much loved by
Paul Hogan was much loved by us Aussies. Until he turned into a tax cheat.
But nonetheless good news. Locking the iPhone in Australia would never have been a good idea anyway. Telstra has the biggest subscriber base, however they are utterly despised by most so even the iPhone probably wouldn't be a helpful selling tool for them. Plus then BigPond (Telstra's Internet services arm) has their own music store, so that would result in conflicts of interest with regard to Apple and the Wi-Fi iTunes Store.
Optus seemed like a better fit for the iPhone in my view, but network independence is really the holy grail.
My only concern is what will become of the unlimited data and visual voicemail most countries have become accustomed to. Will Australia be another Ireland? 3G data in Australia costs more than a blackmarket kidney at the moment.
Oh happy happy joy joy
I know it's only a rumor, but it's a good rumor. But I do agree with Warwick about the data rates. Sure it's good to be unlocked, but I was kind of hoping that Apple would do a deal with someone and force them to have an unlimited data plan. Down side to that is, we would most likely have to pay for handset like they do now. If the phone is unlocked, someone may subsidise it. We can only hope.
But if it's unlocked, what stopping the telcos from doing what they always do and charge a mint for data. One thing that would be sweet though is a FULLY subsidised handset. Nothing up front for 24 months.
Oh by the way, check out this great pic. Looks like Channel 9 in Australia got the exclusive look at Windows on the iPhone. Idiots. http://mactalk.com.au/
Iphone in Australia
Time will tell if Optus or telstra get the iphone, personally, I hope its not a plastic phone like people are saying it will be, the current look of the iphone is great, very distinctive... as for Paul Hogan - revered in Australia ?? NOT - whoever said that really needs to get his head out of the movie cliches once and for all, paul hogan is NOT revered, most people in australia couldn't care less about him
Any truth to it?
I would be overjoyed if we will finally see an official iPhone here in Australia. There have been many rumours of carriers however (Telstra, Optus, Vodaphone) and no phone as yet. But a Sydney store/iPhone launch combo makes sense.
