Is Apple trying to squash the Hackintosh netbook movement with one mighty software update? According to OSX Daily, they are. 10.6.2 early build kernels don't support Intel's Atom chipset, which seem to indicate that 10.6.2 won't be able to be installed on most Hackintoshes without some "major" modifications. Most PC Netbooks run variants of Intel's Atom processor.
This move would also indicate that Apple has no imediate plans to release a product based on Intel's Atom processors.
Do we now have a new cat and mouse game?
It is also interesting to note that Microsoft is trying to get people to put Windows 7 on Netbooks while Apple is trying to prevent them from doing the exact same thing.

hm...
variants, not varients
Soo...will you guys finally
Soo...will you guys finally stop talking about the non-existent apple tablet? It's not going to happen.
GOOD
GOOD! finally instead of wasting time modifying, hackintosh users can FINALLY buy a mac! even a macbook white (Y) cheap as chips :)
Im 16 !! have a macbook pro 13inch :) Iphone 3gs and Imac 20inch

I agree with that: My parents
I agree with that: My parents are not rich, but I wanted a Mac. So I got a job which I did after school and three months later I had an iMac. It was totally worth it, plus because I continued working, now I don't have a problem buying things... Two thumbs up.
Back to topic: Macs are great, hackintoshs suck because the great workflow of a Mac is interrupted by errors and driver issues. Not worth it. The price difference between a hackintosh and a real Mac is smaller than the amount of money you could earn by working in the time you are trying to fix all of the hackintosh's problems.

Problem: this is netbooks
Problem: this is netbooks we're talking about here. In case you haven't noticed, Apple doesn't make a netbook, so until they do, people who want a tiny Mac are forced to go the hackintosh route.
What I believe you fail to understand is that there is actually an infinite price difference between a hackintosh netbook and a Mac netbook because /Apple doesn't offer a netbook at ANY price/.
And by the way, it's really not up to you to complain about hackintoshes in the first place. If you don't like them, don't build one.
The white MacBook is not so
The white MacBook is not so much larger than a lot of the current netbooks available (although of course there is a difference), and the iPhone has got a lot of features of a UMPC, MID or a netbook, so that I don't see a gap in between the iPhone and MacBooks where an Apple netbook could fit in. I do not complain about hackintoshs in general, I just think there is no real reason (beside of "I-DO-IT-BECAUSE-I-CAN") to build one. Everybody who wants to do so should be free to build one, but I wanted to explain why Apple's decision doesn't seem this terrible TO ME.
C'mon, Apple, Post the damn thing already
Just wonderin' why it's taking so long for this to show up as a download; I thought it was ready to roll a week ago.
why would you put os x on a
why would you put os x on a netbook?
its a pixel waster with those fat titlebars and that menu bar you can' hide.
windows 7 still can't cancel a print job, nor can it truely handle bluetooth devices but other than these two issues it's bliss.
Uh-huh
Uhm... there's a good reason why you can't hide the menu bar or title bars - I'll leave it as a challenge to the read to figure out why.
Yeah, already
I've been waiting a while for the update as well. I want 2 get both that and the new magic mouse as well.
"It is also interesting to
"It is also interesting to note that Microsoft is trying to get people to put Windows 7 on Netbooks while Apple is trying to prevent them from doing the exact same thing."
Apple is a hardware vendor and as such makes money from Macs sales. OSX is perceived added value for the Apple crowd.
Microsoft is a Software vendor. The more platforms it can put its OS on, the more money it makes.
Simple as that.
You mean I won't be able to
You mean I won't be able to sync my Palm Pre on my Netbook anymore? :P
how early are these builds?
how early are these builds? and is it something that could possibly be added before it's released?
Typical.
I'm sure I'll get flamed for saying this, but I'm getting really discouraged by Apple's pattern of behavior. One day, the Mac will be as closed as the iPhone. Mark my words. I can see a competitive need for shutting out the Pre, but how many Hackintoshs are out there, really? The process takes a lot more effort and skill than the average consumer possesses, and the daring to do something that is of dubious legality. I have a Netbook myself, but not the time or desire to bother. I can only see this as a kick in the teeth to a small group of people who are, arguably, making Apple look bad for claiming that acceptable performance is impossible on a sub-$900 machine. Sony fought the "race for the bottom", too, as long as they could--that's Sony, the OTHER company that doesn't give a crap about what consumers (that's you) want to do with their own hardware.
It's all happening because of
It's all happening because of companies like Psystar. :(
Hackintoshes suck... blah
Hackintoshes suck... blah blah blah.
But when it comes down to it. The people who load OS X on a non-Apple do it for the challenge and the OS. I have 2 MacBooks and a few hackintoshes one of which is a Quad Core with 8gb of RAM and an 8800GTX. A comparable Mac Pro is 2800 dollars. Sorry. An aluminum case and an overpriced LCD are not worth it to me. I created Hackintoshes to better interface with my existing Macs. As a full time computer nerd (repair tech in a local computer shop) I thrive on hacking things.
Nothing quite like the triumph of running slow leopard on my EeePC 1000HA running 10.6.1. Believe it or not, I just killed it by installing the 10.6.2 update. I figure it would break it, but half the fun is fixing it again. The amount of things I learned from making a hackintosh is immense, things from kexts, to DSDTs, to EFIs. While a majority of Mac users just "want it to work," some of us are tinkerers, and love nothing more than taking things apart and making it do things it isn't made to do. Don't knock Hackintoshes if you don't know what your doing and complain it just 'doesn't work right'. Because when it boils down to it, Intel Macs and PCs are one and the same now.
