Apple's stock trajectory charted against major events of the last year

Silicon Alley Insider's SChart of the Day is AAPL's roller coaster of a year overlayed with the larger Apple events.  Pretty interesting how everyone is bullish right now...

..because those Generation 3 iPod touches aren't going to sell that well until it gets a camera.  Although it is only one tiny product, it is the most important iPod and is facing unprecedented competition from Sony, Microsoft and Archos.

New PowerBook??

yes, the G5 ...with the Beatles

They didn't put the camera in the touch because it would cannibalize iphone sales that have a higher profit margin. Same reason why nano is unable to take pics.

I'm sorry but that makes so sense. You mean they expect you to buy a iPod Touch, then buy an iPhone rather than a camera to fulfil your want of a camera? People buy an iPod Touch because they can't get an iPhone for age or contractual reasons, or they don't want to change networks.

There's no camera on the iPod Touch because Apple discovered at the last minute that their was a fault. There's no other explanation. It was a mistake, unfortunately.

I sincerely hope you are being sarcastic. The new touches have more storage and run faster for less money - why would that not sell? Do you think 95% of apes customers had any idea that the 'blogosphere' expected a camera? Nope, not a chance.

And it's especially strange that you cite an absolute need for a camera based on 'unprecedented competition' from 3 products that
a) don't have cameras
and
b) have been competing with apple's iPod line unsuccessfully for many many years.

We can only gauge by what we are hearing and feeling for ourselves.  Like you pointed out, there are 2 things going on here.

a). iPods don't have cameras.  Cameras would have been the differentiating factor.  Now all of the competition seems similar to the average consumer.

b). Sony, Archos and Microsoft have all introduced products that are in some ways better than the iPod touch.  Some customers will go there.  It won't be you or me, but they will

We'll know how they did at the end of the quarter, until then it is just a gut feeling.

My point with #2 is that these same folks have been trying to dethrone the iPod in ALL of it's incarnations for the past 6 years. This is far from unprecedented (ever google the term iPod killer?).

Zune, Walkman, archos, sansa, etc. The best any of them have manage to do is rack up 7-8% ofthe market, in spite of their differentiating factors (fm radio, wifi before the iPod had wifi, sd cards, video before the iPod video, smaller form factors, bigger screens, etc). There have been a million attempts and none have worked.

I really don't see how a small group of people with disappointment in the lack of a camera is going to slow the juggernaut.

The ups and downs have a lot to do with how the market was doing at the time in general. Having said that apple is of course outperforming the market now.

zune HD = no camera, some apps take 30 seconds to load (see video on web today), web browser is horrible
ipod touch = no camera, apps open quickly, best web browser experience with mobile safari
archos = no name brand people aren't going to trust out of the gates (i mean no name brand to main stream people buying ipods not tech site visitors)

i haven't even included itunes or the app store in this comparion. this christmas season will be fine for apple. and we'll find out how right or wrong you are about ipod touch sales on october 21 or 22 when apple releases earnings with about a month of sales from launch to end of quarter
