WiMAX when?

Wed, 02/13/2008 - 07:42 — Seth Weintraub

We found it interesting that WiMAX was being touted here with Segways.  The two technologies have a lot in common.  When both of these products were announced, they were heralded in the press as 'the second coming' tech that would change the world.  Then, as delay after delay after delay hit, the hype wore down and reality set in.

When the Segway was released, it had lost it's 'cool, world -  changing status' and been relegated to Steve Wozniak geek toy.  We still see some around and now they have off-road models and such - but they aren't changing the world.  They are doing things like giving police an excuse not to walk or ride bikes or horses.

Is WiMAX doomed to a similar fate?  The mood around the technology certainly feels that way.  The hype has long since worn off and other mobile technologies seem to be coming up that could render it meaningless?  It is probably too early to tell.

WiMAX still has a monster partner in Intel and the Internet has a way of leveling the playing field.  VoIP technologies pretty much make legacy telecom garbage a thing of the past.  Also, some help from the Google-Android platform could really help.   It wouldn't hurt to see Apple jump into the game - almost everyone wants more competition in the wireless industry - even Apple.

How cool is that! WiMAX

How cool is that! WiMAX rulez... or doesn't. Who on earth wants to have a two meter antenna sticking out off their pocket. I'd said moderately inconvenient... 3G and its evolution path has ot stronger future (without the 2 meter antenna I might add).

Is that a two meter antenna

Is that a two meter antenna in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

Anyway, antenna size is a temporary concern. Look at how small other kinds of antennas have become. Bet your cell phone doesn't even have a protruding antenna.

I remember my family's first cell phone. People would say, "that's cool, but who wants to carry around a ten-pound shoulder bag?"

It was kinda like this bad boy: http://tinyurl.com/2b45v6
but it came in a carrying case with a shoulder strap that would leave a mark in your skin from the weight.

Just like the antenna, it needed some time in the market to refine and reduce size.

I would rather HSPA (3G) be

I would rather HSPA (3G) be built into MacBooks. That would be way cool. Great coverage woldwide and improving coverage in the US. That standard evolves to LTE in 2009/2010 which offers 100Mbit+ speeds on the go.

Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile are rolling out LTE networks so there should be good coverage in the US, and it's the standard around the world.

How embarrassing. This

How embarrassing. This reminds me of the goofy newsreels of the mid-20th century of walking dogs and people standing on the wings of planes and pie-eating contests.

Good stuff!

No one in a million years is

No one in a million years is going to invest in the antenna network needed for WiMax, not when theres a 3G network already in place. Anyone want to join my Segway gang? We're going to terrorise some little old ladies!

That antenna was

That antenna was specifically for this specialized demo as the WiMAX network was built for temporary usage. You'll see combo WiFi/WiMAX cards as small as a postage stamp that are built inside laptops by mid-year, with the same hidden antennas they use today for WiFi.   Yes, it's a bit silly looking in the demo, but it get's attention and demostrates the long distance coverage of WiMAX that exists today.
