Engadget got a ticket to the ball...surprisingly, we didn't. Oh, and notice he's holding a 4G nano? Will it be rainbow-licious? Will there be a GPS touch? All signs point to yes...Let's Rock!!
It will be very interesting to see what the new iPods will have to offer as well as the new price levels... I'm not in the market for one (I've got a 3rd gen Nano and its perfect :-) & saving up for upcoming MacBook...
provided you've got the maps saved to the iPod you don't need a WiFi or a cellular signal to download the date - you get the positioning from the GPS satellite which then maps onto the map data on your iPod. How does normal satellite navigation work?
RIght on. Built-in maps would make the touch an awesome stand-alone GPS.
Is it possible? Of course. There are dozens of hand-held mapping GPS devices on the market for under $200.
Obvious, Apple -could- do it better. The question I have is - does Apple WANT to compete in the hand-held GPS market? If so, it could significantly change the rather static existing handheld GPS market (Garmin, Magellan, Lowrance, etc.)
Then again, most handheld GPS devices are either great nav units with voice output (speakers!) or battle-hardened for use on the trail (waterproof)

@ DCW:
It is possible if you have the whole map local on your touch. Like an GPS Device. Apple could sell those maps with the App store and make money ;)
The image itself looks like it's supposed to be taken from an iPod screen (notice the battery and play indicators in upper right); interesting that it's a widescreen angle...

Can't Wait.

Here's a (probably) weird question:
How could there be a decent GPS- Touch? Isn't the purpose of GPS to be able to take it anywhere with you - including places that don't have wifi?
I'm sure you all have some technical info that I don't, so share! ;-)

It looks more like a touch than a 4G nano...too wide and too big.
