These stories are always a downer. SAI reports that Apple isn't likely to build the much talked about MediaPad/Tablet device until 2010. All hope isn't lost for 2009, however. They source (often incorrect) Gene Munster:
"We expect the development of such an OS to be underway currently, but its complexity, along with our conversations with a key company in the mobile space, leads us to believe it will not launch until CY10," Munster says.
With the Android-based Archos 3G media tablet with WWAN only months away, we'd love to see Apple in this space ASAP...but as SAI says, it probably doesn't matter. How long were there MP3 players (including Archos) before the iPod came out?

BOO as long as they do come
BOO as long as they do come out with one. thats all that matters. i was hopeing they would blow us out of the water, finger licking good amazingness in june with this tabs

Dear 9to5, as much as I enjoy reading your webpage would it be possible to not post drool-worthy mock-ups along with "Not coming anytime soon, suckers"-type stories? haha
Thanks.
I wonder what they are doing
I wonder what they are doing on campus there in Cupertino. Seems to me they haven't produced any hardware innovation since 2007.
i now wish to hear the end of
i now wish to hear the end of this silly idea, tablets dont sell so apple arent going to make a pointless ipod touch that doesnt fit in ya pocket, and blogs try to get around this by moving the release back a year every year. enough
i don't see the point of a
i don't see the point of a tablet computer at the moment. most of the tablet pcs are only good for writing, but how often does one find the need to write on the screen? to professionals they'd buy an ink pad anyway. people use their laptop in a different way as they use mobile phones. the one possibility is to use laser projected keyboard on the surface, but then how can you possible use it in economy class seats on the plane?
Sustainability?
I agree that the tablet PC will blow us out of the water initially, but I wonder about the sustainability of such a device in the long term.
How many innovative devices have we seen come full circle in the past few years, I just don't think touch-screen PC's will last and soon, once we have all shelled out our thousands of $'s/£'s, we will all be reverting back to retro Laptops!

If true this is awful news.
If true this is awful news. We all want Apple to come up with some amazing hardware. It's been a while since there was an amazing Keynote with El Jobso blowing everyone away with feature after feature. The recent ones have all been a bit padded out.
Crap! I posted to the wrong thread
I posted my feelings on the subject in the poll thread below this one.
Admin, I don't suppose you can move it to this thread could you?
Whatever. Bottomline is I'm pretty mad about the situation. There is of course nothing I can do about it. :(
What company????
"We expect the development of such an OS to be underway currently, but its complexity, along with our conversations with a key company in the mobile space, leads us to believe it will not launch until CY10," Munster says.
What mobile company did they talk to do you suppose??
Apple is loosing it!

Running Scared
Apple clearly is running scared in regards to netbooks or tablets. Clearly they thought that the macbook was their netbook and are afraid to do a 12 inch or smaller with even lower specs, but guess what? This is exactly what 10s of million consumers want. A tablet will always lose over half a market because a majority of people want a keyboard( of some real sort) to type. Apple just can not come to grips with this. You will not shove the virtual keyboard down our throats. Plus the quality and style of competitor's netbooks are evolving into nice machines at reasonable prices. Perhaps apple should stay out of this market segment to avoid producing an overpriced turkey. Avoid showing that they are out of touch and inflexible, etc, etc....

Netbooks are for Geeks.
Good god, did you ever actually try a netbook? They're a joke. Crappy screen, low storage capacity, and poor performance all for a low-low price.
I had a 12 inch PowerBook for many years, and it rocked as it was a fully-functional computer. The current crop of NetBooks are NOT. They are very limited, and are only useful as a secondary computer.
As a serious business-minded professional, I don't WANT a second computer, or a second device to lug around. I just want ONE device to lug, and that is my MBA. It is capable of running all modern software, the screen is decent, you can easily use it at the airport or on the airplane, and you can use it for serious work.
A netbook, in its current style, isn't capable of any of those things. I know of NO ONE that owns a netbook that (1) uses it as their only device, AND (2) isn't a hardware geek with 3 or more computers in the house or office.
YOU GUYS ARE STUPID Apple
YOU GUYS ARE STUPID
Apple can't make a new damn device every year. What would be the point? New crap for the sake of new crap?
You sir have no idea....
.....what you are talking about!
This project has been in the works for several years now and is overdue for its debut. Why don't you research the subject before calling people stupid ok?
That's Archos for you, always
That's Archos for you, always on top of things like that. I bought my Archos 604 Wifi at the start of the summer two years ago, several months before the original iPod Touch came out. Of couse, before the Touch, Apple had never had a touch screen media player (not to mention with wifi) before, whereas Archos has had wifi-equipped multimedia players for years now (at least 2-3 years before I bought my 604). I expect Apple will likely come in a bit late with this one as well.
:-S
I'm very confused. I know that I would want one, due to Apples ability to sell me anything, but also because I am going to study math at uni. You just can type math out, even with specialist programmes, it just takes too long. So I use a ink pad - lovely. However, what about when I want to review my notes, or make a presentation about them (my learning methods are cool :-P ). Plus my paper notes just walk around my room and lose themselves. I could scan them.... enough said on that one. So my point being a table would work well for me. I love my MacBook but for this kind of note making, keeping them organised and actually learning when I'm on any device - a tablet would be the best option. So those saying there is no point, there actually is. It just all down to how well they do it, cos all other tablets are a load of absolute shi*e
While I think that this type
While I think that this type of device has the potential to be a homerun, the projected timing (vs. this year) isn't shocking for two reasons:
1. Partitioning the platform between open PC-like layers (i.e., download apps from anywhere) and managed/closed runtime layers (App Store is THE marketplace with a singular SDK, APIs, etc.) is a potential hornet's nest of technical, user experience and ecosystem decisions.
2. Such a device is a logical point for Apple to define forking decisions between abstractions and uniformity, relative to supporting all sorts of different form factors under this platform (e.g., Macs, Apple TV, iPhone, iPod touch, Tablet, keyboard, touch/tilt only, camera, video, TV tuner).

Make This
Apple...JOBS...Please just make this. I would love to spend shitloads of money if this was made:
http://www.9to5mac.com/tommaso-gecchelin-macbook
One, please.
Apple's marketing is simply brilliant - a job made easier given it's innovation and high quality product line, granted. But world class, nevertheless.
This could all be a big spin by Apple to increase the impact of the arrival of a tablet device. When already disappointed, the impact of surprise is increased.
I'd like a bigger version of my iPhone. Would be great for quick work - creative ideas, sketches, brainstorming, client demo's, training and coaching... I like the idea of working direct to the device, think of the possibilities for gestures.
I hope Apple release such a product in June. I will buy one if/when they do.
potential killer
Imagine the use of this device for garageband - sheer awesomeness. Playing the actual piano/keyboard on the tablet...
Imagine the technology it will get adobe to bring out for photo editing and drawing.
Imagine the technology Microsoft word can do for the tablet (although it has already)
Most likely it will include the "balance" feature in the iphone, where tilting it will cause some cool effects. god knows what.
As long as what they bring out is as cool as this design, http://www.9to5mac.com/tommaso-gecchelin-macbook id be more than happy to purchase another mac.
to all of you who brought the
to all of you who brought the argument that there is no need for a product that fills the gap between the iPhone and the MacBook. I think there is.
please allow me a prediction from all we have heard and read:
apple’s next new product will be spectacular, it will define a new category of products and it will cannibalize neither the iPhone business, nor the MacBook sales. it will be the next, the fourth pillar of Apple’s success.
it will be a MacTouch.
- a 10 ” tablet, nine times the screen size and resolution of the iPhone, resembling the iPhone from the looks an being roughly as thick
- thus immediately working with every existing iPhone app
- combining everything from the iPhone (3G, WiFI, Bluetooth, AppStore, iTunes synching) with everything from the mac (iLife and iWork will work with new preinstalled specialized versions for touch control) - OS X Snow Leopard is the key - that’s why they focus on performance.
- it will be touch controlled with a large visual/virtual keyboard, but of course the existing sleek Apple wireless Keyboard will work immediately using Bluetooth
- it will have 1 or 2 (micro)USB-ports making it the ideal device for storing, presenting and basic editing of photos and videos while on holiday, for watching videos with the family (for eventually it will be possible to import our DVDs in iTunes just like our CDs …)
- it will have a front camera and microphone for video-conferencing or for putting your face into games or for making fun photos with photo booth
- it will be THE new gaming device for groups, playing all the famous board games on a screen large enough lying in front of you and sitting on every side of it (like chess with touch control and animation)
- it will be THE new book reader (though i have some doubts concerning readability in sunlight and battery life when compared to e-ink devices like the kindle), especially making it possible to produce “books” with integrated video and sound content
- it will have a stand to work as a notebook screen when typing with the keyboard or to use as small display to watch videos or digital tv or for presentations (maybe a protective cover doubles as a stand when flipped over ..)
- it will have a bluetooth remote control, reasonably good speakers and - hopefully - a SD-card reader built in
- it will be gorgeous, lightweight and affordable without being cheap and crappy like the windows netbooks
- it will be priced between the iPhone/ iPod touch and the MacBook - let me guess: somewhere between $ 499 with 8 GB and without iWork and $ 799 with 32 or even 64 GB and including iWork
- it will be THE product to present your creative work on the go, to watch video and photos in a group, to work on documents with basic editing while sitting in the bus or on the plane, to check and write emails and much more
- we will be allowed to use our existing apple software on this product without an extra fee
- it will work and synchronise with iTunes on a PC, thus being the entrance to the real mac world for old time PC-customers (they simply will want to buy an OS X-system next time a new notebook or desktop will be needed)
- it can be used like the iPhone, but it can’t replace it (because of size), it can be used like a MacBook but it can’t replace it (because of lack of keyboard, processing speed, lack of large storing space, limited display resolution, limited connectivity)
- it is simply the perfect companion in between.
- it will be revolutionary
- it will be presented in a special event this summer by Steve Jobs, celebrating his return to the public
- it will be available in time for the holiday season
