Try kicking out the cable during Time Machine's active period. Maybe you'll find out. Given that up till mid-Oct. it was in the Beta and they were advertising the feature there is likely a defect that'll cause a data loss under some circumstances that they hadn't been able to figure out or fix completely by release.
