Next Generation EeePCs will be touch screen, compete with iPod/iPhone?
Tue, 03/25/2008 - 04:54 — Seth Weintraub
Digitimes says that in the second-quarter 2008 (within weeks to months) ASUS will be releasing EeePCs with resistive touch panels. This contrasts with the more acurate capacitive touch screen technology that is employed in the iPod Touch and iPhone. The difference to the user is that resistive touch works with styli while capacitive touch uses the natural capasitance of the finger to pinpoint location. Because the resistive touch screen is a more mature technology, the prices in bulk for the addition of this technology will approach only $10 per device. I wrote on why I think that the EeePC is the biggest competitor to the iPhone and iPod here. This only makes that competition more significant.

Threat huh? Yeah.....ok
Threat huh? Yeah.....ok dude.
I already have a flip phone!
I already have a flip phone! But I can slide mine into my pocket. And it doesn't block my peripheral vision when I talk into it. Convenient!
Are you kidding me?
The EeePC is a competitor to the iPhone? Are you serious?
Eh... yeah.
I love the Apple fanboys!
I love the Apple fanboys! They think the iPhone will destroy everything. At the same price, you get much more from an EEE PC. Apple will really have a fight on its hands if these things get much better.
I love mine and use it more than my iPhone.
Less is more.
Less is more is one principle in Apple design. Clearly, the EEE PC, being much less, is actually much more.
iPod Air
Where did the piece of news/speculation about iPod Air go?

A competitor to the ASUS
A competitor to the ASUS EeePC is what I was hoping for from Apple and not the MacBook Air.
I love my iPhone, but to compare it as a competitor to the ASUS EeePC is ridiculous. Apple blew it. This is what Mac Users wanted and not the MacBook Air.
Apple is really pissing me off these days. The SDK for the iPhone should have been ready at the iPhone launch or shortly thereafter.
Apple is always at the cusp of greatness but just never gets over the hurdle. They always manage to pull some stupid blunder that stunts their potential.
Yes, I very much agree on
Yes, I very much agree on that.
Apple totally missed the point.
Why make slightly slimmer, slightly lighter, a bit smaller and very crippled laptop. I really don't see the difference of carrying around MacBookAir or my 15' MacBookPro except the fact that I can do all the work on the one I own now.
If MacBookAir was sized and priced roughly as EeePC that would make so much more sense. And I would certainly buy it.
Apple's fanboy just ignore
Apple's fanboy just ignore them. If they ever read Jobs interview's with Fortune magazine that he lamented although owning OS and hardwares and only have 4,5% of market shares...he come very close to admit his products suck.
EeePCs are more dangerous to
EeePCs are more dangerous to Windows and UMPCs, before they are a threat to iPhones.
eee
Long live the Eee! It far surpasses all other computer systems so far in terms of portability and freedom. It's a serious competitor to iPhones, and touchscreen is just going to make it more awesome. I want one...
You can't compare them like
You can't compare them like that. You're comparing apples to oranges (or in this case, Apples to Asuses). They're both entirely different devices. They have entirely different intended uses. They're both good at what they were made to do, but they were made to do different things. I think you could make a point that the EEE is the MacBook Air's biggest competitor (not a point a necessarily agree with), but at least you're comparing a computer to a computer there, and not a computer to a cell phone.
First of all, Mr. Applesuck,
First of all, Mr. Applesuck, its pretty hard to take you seriously when you clearly don't understand the conventions of the language you are writing in.
The thing about the EeePC, as far as competing with the iPhone, is that its huge. I really don't think many people are debating between a device that fits in your pocket and a device that you need to carry around in a backpack. I'm sure as hell not. Carrying a computer around all the time is a huge inconvenience. I don't even want to carry mine to class or to the library. If it's going to be 7 inches it might as well be 10 or 12, too big for a pocket is too big for a pocket in my eyes. Also, the stylus is dead, let's face it and move on. Using a plastic pen with a touch interface is annoying and totally unnecessary in this day and age. Also, in response to whoever said it, the SDK could not have been released with the phone and worked smoothly, if the phone didn't end up taking off the way it did, Apple would have wasted a ton of time and money on it. I'm sure that one of the most successful technology companies in the world knows what it's doing in terms of marketing and product progression. Have some faith people.
New iphone must come soon
Hope apple brings a new iphone soon that has more memory and smaller and lighter design.
I have an EeePC, and I love
I have an EeePC, and I love it.
My boyfriend has an iPhone, and he loves it.
I, however, don't really think they're comparable.
I think the EeePC could only really be a threat to Apple if
someone has around 500 dollars to spend, and looking for
something in both these arenas. I really do think they're completely separate devices.
*On a side note:
I can make Skype phone calls at wi-fi hotspots, and my computer does fit in my purse ( and no, it's not the size of a beach bag)!!
But, I guess this really wouldn't work out too well for guys who don't carry a man-bag. :p
EeePC. and man bags.
Personally I use the same "Man-Bag" to go Blackpowder shooting, carry My Eee to the coffee shop, and to carry my lunch to work. And no, IT'S not the size of a beach bag either.
The Eee isn't an iPhone, not trying to be. But it's much more convenient to carry {Than somthing with a 17in screen} and dosn't come with complimentary eyestrain. It's not gonna fall out of my pocket, into a toilet in a public restroom, and I am not gonna shed as many tears when/if it bites the dust.
As allways, the tool NEEDS to fit the use.
