A good wired home phone that wirelessly links to Address Book and iCal on your Mac. The phone sends all calls to your Mac where they are recorded and e-mailed directly to you.
The phone has a small display, that shows messages and your calendar, weather, stocks etc.
PhoneValet does link your home phone to your address book and can record all calls and email your voice mail to you.
But I like the idea that shows calendar messages (and reminders) and other widgets. The problem is many people are moving away from home phones and getting VOIP, mobile phones, etc. as their primary phones.
Today I have:
* VCR
* DVD-player and "a ton of" DVDs
* TV (and soon, hopefully, a projector)
* Digital TV set top box
* Surround sound system
* Mac computers
* iPod
* iPhone
...and lots of remotes!
I think with different users different views on sound and display quality it's hard to come up with a given solution by Apple. So what I would like is an improved Apple TV using my iPhone (or an iPod Touch) as remote.
The improved Apple TV needs:
* Digital TV input and recording
* Easy handling of existing DVDs (to be imported menus and all just as easy as CDs today)
* Remote extender to control other devices, e.g. I use my iPhone as a remote to the Apple TV and when I increase the volume the Apple TV sends commands to my surround sound system preferably via a Wifi remote extender.
* Basic computer capabilities: Safari, Mail etc.
There are a few of us boring folks left on Earth who actually need a Mac to do work on. World computer market share has determined years ago that a separate free-standing computer that can be plugged into a display is still the most needed form. Yet Apple in its arrogance refuses to give us a MODERATE Mac; The undeniably wonderful Mac Pro is way too big and way too expensive for probably 90% of even professional needs. The Mini, which was a great computer when it came out has been left to become daily less and less relevant for contemporary requirements, due to Apple's contemptuous neglect.
"World computer market share has determined years ago that a separate free-standing computer that can be plugged into a display is still the most needed form."
Do you even know how much of an idiot that sentence proved you to be? "...determined YEARS AGO...STILL the most needed form." How the hell did they determine what we need now years ago? And can we have a source link for this information please?
Further than the idiocy of your argument, the tendency of consumers over the past few years toward notebooks shows that desktops are less and less desired. And for those who need this mystical "moderate" Mac desktop...have you ever heard of iMac? While you're off in your wonderland searching for the moderate Mac desktop, it's sitting right on the Apple store table.

I think the product Apple needs to make and I believe will make is an Apple TV with a DVR, Blueray Drive and Cable Card slots competing directly with TiVo add bluetooth for keyboard hookup and bingo this the next great product.

Please. Who thinks this stuff up? You're not going to see any of this crap come from Apple. Unless Apple is planning on getting into the cheap consumer market. Apple is all about innovation. There's no innovation in any of these products. And I don't think Apple wants to bring anything to the table that you can get on sale at Wallmart.
Apple should work with auto manufacturers to design their in-car entertainment systems that run the existing audio and navigation systems that come built in as OEM equipment.
The current interfaces are pure crap and really haven't caught up with existing technology. We need better content management, internet connectivity and easier to navigate interfaces.
This could be a huge market for Apple and they already have relationships with many auto manufacturers from their iPod integration efforts.
Didn't they try this with Volkswagen, but pulled back? Rumours said because their automative corporate culture is too different than Apple? (Automative being conservative, and Apple being innovative)
But I do agree with you. Apple would make a kick ass interface for cars.
I cant imagine Steve's disgust when he sees digital picture frames. Nothing in the whole world is tackier.
There's no way they'll do a gaming console - there's too much loyalty to established brands there. iPhone gaming, sure, and more Mac games than usual, but they'll never break into the console market - especially since XBOX and PlayStation users are usually hardcore PC users, and Nintendo users are Nintendo loyalists.
I think we'll see even more consolidation across Apple's product lines, rather than a diversification of their business. It seems to me that very soon the iPhone and the Mac are going to start overlapping in a big way. Judging by some of the recent patents we've seen come out, I think the iPhone-as-integrated computing device, rather than a cell phone/iPod, is going to be stressed in the coming years, and we'll see Apple condensing most of its innovation efforts into integrating iPhone and Mac into our daily lives. I wouldn't be surprised, for instance, to see a barcode scanner/RFID module integrated into iPhone, that we could use to check prices in a store or pay for something instantly, or recognize buildings and geographic features, etc. I'll bet the future of Apple is more features and essential software in only a few beautifully-designed devices - ones that, like iPod, everyone has.
But then again, they're always coming up with things I never knew I needed. So who knows?
I would be able to ditch my MBP, use an iPhone/iPod to tether to for storage and connectivity. I would also be able to tie into my .Mac service for remote storage. As a small business owner, I would pay good money for a solution like that, and I know several of my competitors and clients that would likely do the same - some just for the cool factor, most for the convenience.
How about a desk device to display widgets. It should be WiFi enabled and allow dashboard-like widgets to be displayed on a small color LCD.
(Not everybody wants a laptop everywhere in the house, but I'd sure like to see the Weather Report, Stock Highlights, Sports Summaries, and News in several places -- kitchen, bathroom, family room)
a home server type of device. A something a bit like timecapsule, which you can store all your backups, and all your media, so that all the computers/appleTV/iPhone(iPT) can stream from. At the moment the only option is buying a fully fledged mac. Second hand minis still costing at least $500. A small box with a 500gb or 1tb drive in to serve media to all the itunes devices, and networked file access would be great. In theory just a software update to time capsule would work!
An integrated TV is a very bad idea. Televisions at this point are static slow changing technology and hence don't get replaced often the way the rest of the home theater products are. Remember TV's with built in VCR's and DVD's, does anyone outside a dorm room actually think those are worthwhile?

Nah, it'll never happen. That's kooky talk.
Bludrive
It might happen, when they introduce the Bludrive and the superdrive will become available on lowend macbooks.
But looking at the direction Apple is going they would rather want discless systems, like the Air for notebooks.
