Honeywell has announced today their first-ever Lyric Cameras and eventual software upgrade for Lyric Security systems, which will make the system compatible with Apple’s HomeKit. Honeywell’s two new Wi-Fi indoor cameras, the Lyric C1 and C2, pair with the Lyric app to access live streaming, recorded events, and alerts for when something is seen or analyzed like a smoke/CO detector going off.

Honeywell Lyric T5 is the company’s second take at a Wi-Fi thermostat with support for Apple’s HomeKit framework for smart homes. The latest member of Honeywell’s Lyric family of smart thermostats introduces a new design that now includes a touchscreen.

Honeywell is announcing a new HomeKit-enabled Wi-Fi thermostat today called the Lyric T5 that will cost $149.99. HomeKit support means you can control the temperature with your voice using Siri or with Apple’s new Home app on iOS 10 and watchOS 3. Lyric T5 features a highly improved design over Honeywell’s other HomeKit thermostat and a larger touchscreen display that makes it worthy of being called a smart home accessory.

If you’re looking to upgrade your home appliances and add Siri control, then HomeKit is a key feature you’ll want to look for when buying new hardware. The number of HomeKit-compatible smart thermostats is continuing to grow with Honeywell’s Lyric Round Wi-Fi Thermostat (2nd-gen) as the latest to hit the market.

Among competing thermostats, the basic premise is the same: Wi-Fi connectivity lets you remotely control heating and cooling from mobile apps, and intelligence using location and the Internet let you add some home automation. The pay off is potentially a lower energy bill and the cool factor of controlling the temperature with Siri.

Having recently reviewed the ecobee3 HomeKit thermostat as well, I’ll be using it as a comparison below to highlight what makes Honeywell’s Lyric Round smart thermostat different.

Expect first HomeKit-compatible devices soon as certified chips ship to manufacturers

The first HomeKit-compatible devices are likely now in production as two chipmakers confirmed to Forbes that they have begun shipping Apple-certified Bluetooth and Wifi chips to device manufacturers.

One part of the certification process for device makers is that they have to buy their Bluetooth and Wifi chips from Apple-approved chipmakers–Texas Instruments, Marvell and Broadcom.

These chipmakers have begun shipping their chips loaded with HomeKit firmware to device manufacturers, Broadcom and Texas Instruments have confirmed.

With Apple stepping into the home automation arena by way of offering closer device integration through its new HomeKit API announced alongside iOS 8, just about every appliance in the home is potential for being refreshed and gaining deeper connectivity with our iPhones and iPads.
