New Apple CEO Tim Cook Introduces New iPhone

With drops in revenue and iOS device sales in what CEO Tim Cook called a “challenging quarter,” highlights from Apple’s Q2 2016 earnings today include an increase in Apple Music subscribers, more cash for Apple’s capital return and share repurchasing programs, and a “huge number of Android switchers and new to Mac customers.” Cook said the company had record switchers from Android and others platforms in the quarter and also noted an increase of 56% for iPhone sales in India despite an overall decline for iOS device sales.

Cook said the company hit record App Store revenue up 35% and updated us on Apple Pay noting the payments service has grown around 5X compared to a year ago and is adding approximately 1 million new users a week.

After reporting its Q2 2016 earnings earlier today, the company is now hosting its conference call where we’ll likely get some more insight and comments on the numbers from Apple execs. Head below for a roundup of all the numbers Apple announced today, and check back for more as we listen in on Apple’s call.

Apple Music now has 13 million paying subscribers, up from 11 million in February

apple-music

Alongside its announcement of Apple’s quarterly earnings, its first revenue decline since 2003, Apple has also announced latest numbers for Apple Music, its $9.99 per month streaming music service. The company says it now has 13 million paying subscribers, up from 11 million in February.

This compares to about 30 million subscribers to leading competitor Spotify, although the service obviously had a multi-year headstart over Apple’s streaming service, which launched last June.

Apple announces Q2 2016 revenue of $50.6b: 51.1m iPhones, 10.2m iPads, 4m Macs

iphone-se-6s

Apple has officially posted its Q2 2016 earnings results with $50.6 billion in revenue and $10.5 billion in profit from the January to March quarter. Apple’s guidance last quarter first pointed to a year-over-year decline in iPhone sales for the quarter following the holiday season citing global economic issues and inflated iPhone 6 demand due to supply constraints the year earlier. Apple’s updated 4-inch iPhone SE and 9.7-inch iPad Pro launched at the end of March.

Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2016 second quarter ended March 26, 2016. The Company posted quarterly revenue of $50.6 billion and quarterly net income of $10.5 billion, or $1.90 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $58 billion and net income of $13.6 billion, or $2.33 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 39.4 percent compared to 40.8 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 67 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Here’s Apple’s breakdown of iPhone, iPad, and Mac sales from the quarter:

  • iPhone: 51.1 million units
  • iPad: 10.2 million units
  • Mac: 4 million units

For iPhone sales, that’s an 18% year-over-year drop and a 19% drop for iPads.

Apple CEO Tim Cook had this to say:

“Our team executed extremely well in the face of strong macroeconomic headwinds,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We are very happy with the continued strong growth in revenue from Services, thanks to the incredible strength of the Apple ecosystem and our growing base of over one billion active devices.”

And Luca Maestri, chief financial officer, said this:

“We generated strong operating cash flow of $11.6 billion and returned $10 billion to shareholders through our capital return program during the March quarter,” said Luca Maestri, Apple’s CFO. “Thanks to the strength of our business results, we are happy to be announcing today a further increase of the program to $250 billion.”

Apple’s Q2 results compare to the prior quarter’s $75.9 billion in revenue, 74.8 million iPhone sales, 16.1 million iPad sales, and 5.3 million Mac sales. In the same quarter a year ago, Apple reported $58 billion in revenue, 61.1 million iPhones sold, 12.6 million iPads sold, and 4.5 million Macs sold. Apple reported $18.4 billion in profit in the prior quarter and $13.6 billion in profit in the year ago quarter.

Opinion: Apple’s MacBook lineup has a storage problem

macbookprossd-3

Yesterday, we showed you how to upgrade late model MacBooks with a 480GB or 1TB SSD. In some cases these upgrades might yield eight times the original capacity of the machine’s internal storage.

While it’s certainly nice to have the option of upgrading, such enhancements do come with downsides. First, there’s the price: it’s $600 to upgrade to a 1TB drive. Second, the upgrade breaks Boot Camp support.

But $600 is relatively cheap when you compare what it costs to score a MacBook with a 1TB SSD. MacBooks feature faster PCIe storage, but it’s still a high price to pay for something so vital — and so cheap by today’s standards.

Apple’s MacBook line has an issue with internal flash storage prices. It’s a problem that continues to worsen, especially as Apple has made it increasingly difficult for users to upgrade.

Dropbox Project Infinite will show all your cloud files in the Finder … without taking up any local space

dropbox-infinite

Dropbox is today announcing a new upcoming feature of its platform, codenamed Project Infinite. When Infinite rolls out, you’ll be able to see all your files and folders stored on Dropbox in the Finder, but they won’t take up any space until they are needed. The company is currently targeting the feature at business users.

This means your Dropbox storage can be far larger in total size than your local disk (as is common with modern setups of 1 TB Dropbox tiers and small SSDs) with on-demand instantaneous access to any file at any time over the Internet …

Apple Q2 earnings expectations: 51 million iPhones, $52 billion revenue, first quarterly decline since 2003

apple-ceo-tim-cook-fighting-fbi-on-terrorism

Later today, at about 4.30 PM ET, Apple will announce its financial earnings results for fiscal Q2, including the latest three-month sales numbers for iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Although Apple is still going to post profits in the billions, still one of the most successful companies the world by all metrics, investor expectations are low as the company guidance indicates it will report its first decline in year-over-year quarterly revenue since 2003. The primary cause? Falling iPhone sales …

Indian government will require all iPhones to include panic button feature in 2017

india

A new motion signed into law in India will require all phones, including iPhones, to feature a ‘panic button’ to call emergency services and GPS for location pings from January 1st, 2017. The provisions are being brought in to aid the ‘security of women’, via the Indian Express.

Obviously, GPS has existed in iPhones since the iPhone 3G but it seems that Apple will have to make some software modifications to iOS to comply with the panic button request.

Review: Logitech’s Smart Connector-equipped charging dock for iPad Pro

Site default logo image

JPEG image-6B804342D5E0-1

As I’ve detailed in the past, I originally purchased the 12.9-inch iPad Pro last November before switching to the to 9.7-inch model last month due to the lack of software optimization on Apple’s part. When I first wrote about this switch, some people were curious as to why I went with the more expensive 9.7-inch iPad Pro over the cheaper iPad Air. Well, there were too main reasons: Apple Pencil and Smart Connector.

Since the start, the potential of the Smart Connector has intrigued me. So far, we’ve only seen a few keyboard cases that take advantage of the feature, but now Logitech is announcing its LOGI Base Charging Stand with Smart Connector for iPad Pro and I’ve been using it for the past few days…

Alongside the announcement of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus last year, Apple announced a new program designed at encouraging users to upgrade their device every year, as opposed to the traditional two-year cycle. At launch, the iPhone Upgrade Program was oddly only available to customers shopping in Apple Stores. Today, however, Apple has expanded the program to the online store so all customers can now take advantage of it.

Review: The Dux for iPad Pro is a lightweight, rugged case with a handy Apple Pencil holder

ipad-pro-dux

Ever since the iPad Pro came out, it seemed like an obvious third-party accessory would be a case that could also hold a Pencil. However, six months on, the number of iPad Pro cases with good Apple Pencil compatibility is still pretty small. You are by no means spoilt for choice if you are looking to buy an iPad Pro case with Apple Pencil holder.

The Dux ($59.95) is a solid attempt at such a case, a lightweight 12.9-inch iPad enclosure providing some protection against drops and bangs, with an Apple Pencil holster on the side. Its simplicity is refreshing, but that brings with it some shortcomings. Read on for my review.

Sketchy rumor suggests iPhone 7 could feature flush touch-sensitive Home button, waterproof and dustproof casing

virtual-home-button

The iPhone 7, expected to debut later this year, is not believed to be a major design overhaul from the iPhone 6s, but that doesn’t mean it won’t include some substantial exterior changes, at least according to one sketchy Chinese rumor site. The reports indicate that the iPhone 7 could feature a digital touch-sensitive Home button, essentially making the iPhone front completely flush, replacing the current physical clicky hardware button. This would help make the iPhone 7 completely waterproof and dustproof, via Storm …

Reporters allowed inside Pegatron iPhone assembly factory for the first time

-1x-1

Over the weekend, Bloomberg posted an exclusive report of Pegatron’s iPhone plant in China. Although Foxconn is Apple’s primary assembler, Apple has moved more of its iPhone assembly contracts to Pegatron in recent years to diversify its supply chain.

The Bloomberg report describes how the factory is managing its workforce, tracking hours via automated systems, and tackling labor issues like overtime. This is the first time Pegatron has allowed official press to photograph the insides of the factory, where 50,000 people work on the floor.

Beyonce’s ‘Tidal exclusive’ album, Lemonade, now available on iTunes to download

Beyonce Apple Music

beyonce-big

Initially billed as an exclusive to Tidal, Beyonce’s new Lemonade album is now available to buy on iTunes. Jay-Z’s streaming music service had been touting itself as an exclusive location to listen to Beyonce’s latest album. While Tidal maintains exclusive streaming rights, the album is now being freely sold for download elsewhere.

Tidal has attempted similar stunts in the past, with Kanye West famously stating his album ‘The Life of Pablo’ would never be on Apple Music and would be exclusive to Tidal. However, a track from the album soon showed up on Apple’s services a few weeks later. There is currently a class action lawsuit forming around the false claims of exclusivity.

Apple continues to dominate tech companies financially, took 40% of all profits in Silicon Valley last year

KGI: iPhone sales in 2016 could be lower than 2014 as iPhone 7 has no ’attractive’ updates

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo at KGI Securities has today published a new research note in which he has some not-so-good predictions for how Apple will fare in the smartphone market during 2016. Kuo predicts that Apple, under the “worst case scenario,” could see iPhone shipments in 2016 lower than what it saw in 2014. Furthermore, Kuo anticipates that Apple will be the only top-five smartphone brand to see a decline in shipments year over year.

The lottery format puts developers on even ground, lending all a chance to win the right to purchase a $1,599 ticket. Though Apple has stated that it plans on notifying winners of the lottery by Monday, April 25th, some winners have already begun to see their credit cards charged.

Opinion: How Apple could tempt me to upgrade to an iPhone 7

After reading Zac’s opinion piece on how the iPhone SE could actually tempt him not to upgrade to the iPhone 7, I realized that I hadn’t even begun to think what Apple could do to get me to want to upgrade to an iPhone 7. Overall I’ve been happy with the iPhone since its iPhone 5 iteration. It was the device I felt Apple really hit its stride with the hardware. I only upgraded to an iPhone 6 because I wanted a better camera and needed more storage space, but the larger form factor was a serious drawback for me. So what could possibly make me even want to upgrade from my current iPhone 6 to another phone later this year?
