Apple slims 1 TB Fusion Drive down to a measly 24 GB of flash storage

retinaimac5k4k

If you’re one of the many excited buyers chomping at the bit to get one of Apple’s latest-gen Retina iMacs, you might want to take a second to consider the specs on the new models. According to Apple’s website, the 1 TB Fusion Drives used in the new all-in-ones have seen a significant decrease in the amount of included flash storage.

How significant? The new drives ship with less than one-fifth of the previous flash storage.

El Capitan beta 6 was released last night and also includes some juicy references to the as-yet-unannounced 21.5 inch Retina Mac desktop.

Apple has recently added the 27-inch iMac with Retina display, originally released in October 2014, to the refurbished section of its online store. Currently, the baseline 5K iMac with a 3.5 GHz quad-core Core i5 processor, 8 GB of RAM, a 1 TB Fusion Drive, and an AMD Radeon R9 graphics processor will cost you $2,119 refurbished from Apple. Retina iMac and iPhone 6 shipping times improve slightly ahead of holidays

apple-imac-5k-retina

Shipping times for the new 27″ iMac with 5K Retina Display have improved from 2-3 weeks yesterday to just 1-2 weeks today. It’s a small improvement, but it’s certainly better than nothing with the holidays right around the corner.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus also saw a drop in shipping times. Many models saw improved shipping times at the end of last month, but now almost all color, size, model, and carrier combinations are available to ship in just 3-5 days. The only exceptions to this are the 128 GB versions, which are all limited to the 7-10 day range.

The iPhone 6 Plus has suffered from stock constraints since it launched, and that isn’t expected to improve for some time, although things do seem to be slowly improving as the months tick by. Hopefully these new shipping times will help plenty of buyers get their hands on one in time for the holiday season.

The tl;dr version of early iMac with Retina 5K display reviews is TAKE MY MONEY [Review roundup]

Site default logo image

retina-imac-review

The early reviews are out for the iMac with Retina 5K display, and the tl;dr version is: if you can afford it, buy it.

Everyone of course agrees that the key market for the machine is video professionals (beating even the base-model Mac Pro in benchmarks), the 5K resolution offering the ability to display full-size 4K video while still leaving enough room for editing tools.

But while the new iMac may be overkill for more mundane tasks, reviewers also agreed that the display is so good that even if you don’t need one, you’ll still want one …

Triple-core iPad Air 2 pegged as 55% faster than any other iOS device, Retina 5K iMac top score beats low-end Pro

Site default logo image

retina-imac-macpro-64bit-october-2014-multicore-thumb

Geekbench results for the iMac with Retina 5K Display have hit the web and show that when it comes to 64-bit processing, the 4.0 GHz model of the new all-in-one comes out ahead of the lowest-end (3.7 GHz) Mac Pro. Of course, the rest of the Mac Pro family handily beats the iMac in the same category.

The extra power is almost certainly dedicating to keeping things running smoothly on the impressive new 5K display.

Meanwhile, on the mobile, new benchmarks for the iPad Air 2 have revealed…

PSA: You can still upgrade the RAM in the Retina iMac, save hundreds over Apple’s price

retina-imac

Yesterday Apple released a new version of the Mac Mini that no longer features user-servicable RAM, but thankfully the new iMac with Retina 5K display still allows users to upgrade memory through an access door on the back, just like previous models. The new machine houses four memory slots.

9to5-image 2014-10-17 at 9.02.54 PMApple’s BTO Prices

If you want to upgrade your memory, you can get 16 GB of DDR3 1600 MHz RAM for $136.50 (about $30 off) at Amazon (below). The kit comes with two 8 GB modules, meaning you can grab two of these kits for a total of 32 GB for around $270. Not a bad deal at all, given that some outlets are charging just under $400 for the same memory—never mind the comical $600 Apple is asking. (Comical in that the 1st 2x8GB kit costs $200 and the second one costs $400 more :/)

The Crucial RAM at Amazon (or other upgrade kitss that are around) will also give you 2 extra 4GB Sims which you can sell or keep in case of emergency.

iFixit tears down the new Retina iMac, finds it largely unchanged over previous versions

Site default logo image
pYHRZpMG6v3p6uIL

via iFixit

The folks over at iFixit have gotten their hands on one of Apple’s new 27″ Retina iMacs, and, as they are wont to do, immediately opened it up to find out what makes these things tick. Inside they found that most of the internal components are actually somewhat familiar.

The SSD inside the new iMac is the same unit found inside the latest-generation MacBook Pro, while the logic board, Bluetooth controller, and more are identical to that of previous iMacs. In fact, in the case of the logic board, iFixit didn’t even document the dissection, instead referring back to the previous year’s teardown.

Analysts remain positive about AAPL following event, focused on iPhone and Apple Pay

Site default logo image

aapl

While the relatively modest iPad updates might have led to a flurry of ‘Apple is doomed’ reports from analysts, an early roundup by Fortune suggests that the consensus view so far remains positive. Most are rating it a buy or overweight – meaning they expect it to outperform typical stocks – with the majority setting a target price in the $112-120 range …

Apple

Today’s Apple event is set to be the launchpad for the new iPad Air 2 and Mini 3 and at least one new retina iMac. We believe Apple has some other big surprises for us as well. For our full rundown on our expectations, see Jordan Kahn’s:

What to expect (and not to expect) at Apple’s iPad/Mac event tomorrow

We’ll be running down the event coverage and pre-coverage right here with this auto-updating live blog so stay dialled in while we’ll do separate posts for new products/services/announcements as they happen…

Apple TV channel for today’s iPad and iMac event live stream is now available

Site default logo image

IMG_3508

Apple previously announced that it would be live streaming Thursday’s iPad and Mac event, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that the company is pushing out an Apple TV channel to stream the video. It is a bit surprising, however, that the channel is already available at midnight Pacific time. It’s usually much later in the day that it appears.

You can also stream the event from Apple’s website on a Mac or iOS device. If you’re on a Windows PC, you’ll need to follow a few extra steps to get the stream working, but you’ll also be able to watch. Apple is expected to debut upgraded versions of the iPad and iPad mini along with a new Retina iMac. There should also be some final details about iOS 8.1 and OS X Yosemite, including release dates and Apple Pay availability.

We’ll have also full coverage of the event right here on 9to5Mac.

KGI: 27″ Retina iMac ready to roll, 21″ next year, iPad Air 2 supply constrained, iPad minis to see minimal updates

Site default logo image

imac-apple-2014

KGI has published a new research note indicating that the 27″ model of the new “Retina” iMac will begin shipping before the end of this year. However, according to the note, a 21-inch version which is currently in development will not be released until the beginning of 2015, probably alongside other products “early 2015” like the Apple Watch and Photos for Mac.

With regards to the iPad Air 2, KGI says that constrained supplies are likely, with a possible initial shipment of only 7-9 million. Compare that to the original iPad Air, which kicked of sales with 12 million units. The iPad mini will be updated, but the changes will be more conservative than those coming to the Air. A 12.9″ iPad is also said to be in development, though no timeline seems to have been set for its release.

Opinion: What can we expect from a Retina iMac, and who will buy it?

Site default logo image

retina-imac

Desktop fans have waited a long time for a Retina iMac, but it now seems pretty clear the wait won’t last too much longer. Our sources told us last month that the machines are “in the late testing phases,” and the rumor is that the machine will have a 5K display, with a resolution of 5120×2880 – exactly double that of the current 27-inch iMac.

We may even have identified the specific display Apple intends to use: a 27-inch 5K panel announced by Dell is looking like a very plausible candidate. This panel would provide a pixel density of 218 PPI, about the same as that of the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro …

Retina iMacs with OS X Yosemite in late testing within Apple, could launch soon

Site default logo image

Screenshot 2014-09-29 09.40.30

A new line of iMacs with ultra high-resolution Retina Displays is in late testing stages within Apple, according to our sources who have used the future desktop computer. While the machine will sport a thin profile similar to that of the current design, which was introduced in 2012, it will be packed with new internals such as faster processors and improved WiFi antennas. The fact that the iMac is in late testing indicates that Apple could be preparing to launch it alongside OS X Yosemite this fall…

We might not see a 5120×2880 pixel iMac, but 4K displays this year from Apple make sense

Site default logo image

Philp-Schiller-4K-Mac-Pro-WWDC-01.

A tweet by a German web design exec suggesting that the resolution of a piece of Mavericks wallpaper suggests a Retina iMac with a resolution of 5120×2880 pixels has been doing the rounds, spotted by bunch of publications.

The rationale is that the resolution is exactly twice that of the current-generation iMac, therefore suggesting a Retina iMac with double the resolution. The problem with this argument is that 5120×2880 pixel wallpaper images are not new to Mavericks. In fact, Apple has used them as far back as 2011, probably just for future-proofing purposes. There’s really no downside to including images which will display nicely on any larger monitors that come along …

What is more likely this year from Apple are 4K displays…

WSJ: Analysts now agree we’re going to see new Retina Macs in June

A newly redesigned 15-inch MacBook Pro was all but rumor until we reported earlier this month that Apple indeed has a slimmed down, all-new MacBook Pro sporting a Retina display, Ivy Bridge, and speedy USB 3. We followed that up with a report revealing Apple’s new MacBook Airs and iMacs will both likely include super-high resolution Retina displays. At the time, we reported Apple’s WWDC in June would be expected for at least the unveiling of the new slim MacBook Pro; although, a gradual roll out of Retina iMacs and Airs following the Pros would not be much of a surprise. Apple typically rolls out new Mac features such as higher-res displays gradually.

Following those reports, The Wall Street Journal published a story today quoting analysts who now all seem to agree that we will see upgraded Macs this summer. Ben Reitzes of Barclays Capital claimed the new Retina Mac lineup would debut at WWDC in June:

Reitzes said it is likely the Mac line will feature the retina-display technology used in the iPad, as well as the new Ivy Bridge quad-core processors from Intel Corp. (INTC) He also estimates that Apple’s new operating-system upgrade, called Mountain Lion, and the new MacBook Airs should be on the market before the first Ultrabook laptops with Microsoft Corp.’s (MSFT) Windows 8 operating system hit the shelves in the fall… “We believe recent data reflect a pause ahead of new products, which we believe will be released this quarter in June,” according to Reitzes, who has an overweight rating and $750 target price on Apple’s stock.
