Enable tethering shortcut found - iPhone 3.0 is Live!

Update: IF you've updated to 3.1 (naughty!) - there is now a way to get your iPhone to tether to AT&T.

iPhone 3.0 is live! so we are going to repost our tethering tutorial with some big improvements.  You now don't have to do any downgrading or torrenting.    Seems you can just run a little command in terminal (Make sure you are on OS 3.0 on a 3G iPhone and iTunes 8.2):

defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

After that, the steps become a lot more simple.

1. Download this file (for AT&T) and mount the disk image (thanks Gizmodo) for other carriers, try here.

2. Option-click on "restore" in your iTunes with your iPhone attached.  Browse to the opened disk image file and hit OK.  It will update phone settings for a few seconds.

3. You have tethering.  Now go into your iPhone/settings/general/network/Internet Tethering and turn it on.

Boom - 3 steps to tethering...

Oh, and how to you like cut and paste and spotlight search?

you just have to dial your voicemail for it to register again with network

This tethering tutorial, same as the last one, still doesn't enable tethering on the original 2G iPhone. Is this 3G specific? You should mention that.

what are you talking about? It says it right at the top 3G only!

it doesnt say that r u blind?

Sure it does:

"Seems you can just run a little command in terminal (Make sure you are on OS 3.0 on a 3G iPhone and iTunes 8.2):"

"(Make sure you are on OS 3.0 on a 3G iPhone and iTunes 8.2):"

Feel Better?

it doesnt say that r u blind?

Oh you must have missed the fine print. This fix does not work for idiots, only normal iphone users.

how do i mount the disk image

...You should NOT be messing with this update which will break aspects of your phones functionality (e.g. voicemail).

if your on a mac, double click it

if your on windows, your sol

mac ftw~

Just done my iPhone on o2 found the carrier file on a different site, did as the tutorial said except mounted the carrier file which i wanted to use. Works great, can o2 crack down on me? who knows?

hi please let me know where you got the o2 carrier settings for tethering

The file in the disk image appears to be for AT&T only (ATT_US.ipcc). Where can I get a similar file for O2 in the UK?

I got tethering to work! Now just to wonder if AT&T is going to charge more for it while I use it...

Any update on how to fix the voicemail?

That's what I had to do to get it to work. I have a slew of iPhones here and first time I had to do that was this week. Very odd but AT&T support fixed the issue by setting up "provisioning" on the phones accounts.

settings>general>network>cell data> under Visual Voicemail
under APN
type acds.voicemail
there ya go

That fixed it for me.

Now that tethering works like a charm, how do you go about getting MMS to work on 3.0 with AT&T

Is there a possibility that this will brick the phone?

Will it void any contracts?

Thanks.

Please mention that this does not work on old-fangled 2G phones. It did break my voicemail though. Any ideas on how t get it back? What do you mean "dial your voicemail?"

It works beautifully once it's set up. I'm worried about how this may affect my billing, though. Will I be able to update when the new version comes out?

I hate this cause now my voicemail doesnt work. And no, redialing 1 doesnt help.

Doesnt work with iTunes 8.2, only the beta. You can't select the ipcc file from the restore option with the 8.2 final release.

ollllllld newwwwwwwwwwwsssssssssss hahaha

Wrong, I just did it with 8.2 final release and it worked fine.

I seem to be having the same problem. You know of any work arounds?

Read post #400, I just tried it and it instantly fixed my voicemail. Still no tethering though on 2G.

Ok heres how you fix your voice mail-
1. Connect the phone to itunes and option click restore
2. Navigate to your user name->Library->iTunes->iPhone Carrier Support
3. Select the file contained within "iPhone Carrier Support" and proceed
You now have your voicemail working again
