FT: Cheaper iPhones en route

The Financial Times today said that Apple would be dropping the price of its entry level iPhone.

Apple plans to introduce a cheaper version of its popular iPhone as soon as Monday, in a move that could dramatically increase the company’s share of the market for web-surfing devices, people familiar with the initiative said on Thursday.

This is is probably an expansion of the 4GB iPhone rumor we heard last week.

Morgan Stanley analyst Kathryn Huberty said that a $100 cut could double demand for the iPhone.

Very Weird

2026

Not sure this makes sense really. The target audience for a cheap phone is going to be - kids. What do kids do with stuff? They fill it up! 4GB is not going to cut it. That would not be nearly enough for me and I have very little on my phone now. I have over 4 Gig but have never filled up my phone.

The 8GB phone would make better sense. Much better entry level than 4GB. Just seems very odd that Apple would go BACKWARDS in this regard. I just see a lot of future whining about not enough space from the 4GB crowd. Then again, it could be a marketing ploy so that when that crowd runs out of space, they go out and buy a bigger model.

Just like how the iPod Nano (which is the best selling iPod) makes "no sense".

STFU.

NOW.

Umm

Where did anyone mention the Nano? Sounds like you got a little wood for the big A huh? Stop being such an ass and READ instead of trying to be a dick.

I have an iPhone 3G btw. Just so I am not labeled a HATER. I am not a fanboi either.

makes sense to me. i have 3 movies and about 300+ songs on my iPhone. i also have 40 apps on my phone, ranging from games to google's voice command thing. i keep all my contacts synced, use itunes to build playlists and import them the iPhone. i dont need a bigger library on my iPhone and im under 4Gb. and i paid a HUGE amount of money for my 8Gb phone.

the first commenter brought up the Nano of a parallel situation with the iPod--use your brains...hes making an analogy (look it up at www.dictionary.com if you have to) and it is an accurate one at that. i own an iPhone AND an iPod nano. i have the Nano setup to play my band's songs (about 53) so i can listen, practice, whatever. i prefer the nano over the iPhone when im running because its small.

your use may require different memory, screens, whatever. dont assume 1.) we have the same requirements as you, or 2.) that Apple is just throing this out without market reseach. apple has a long history, with only few exceptions, of giving consumers what they want/need. and of course upgrading is part of the plan just like all businesses.

i wont say STFU, but i will say, do some analysis before blabbing from your own private Idaho.

I find it hard to believe

I find it hard to believe that it will be out by Monday. If that's the case, why havent we seen spy-shots of cargo coming off a ship from China yet?

standard procedure

This is not surprising in that it's what Apple always does.

Introduce new product, expensive but highly desirable. Once the Tsunami of adoption starts they successively introduce new models each year feeding the wave by lowering the adoption barrier (price) while simultaneously introducing a "pro" model that works like the original in that it's expensive but highly desirable.

They also differentiate by adding a new highly desirable feature with each model. This year it's "iPhone video," next year it's iPhone PDA?

Palm has a great product, but sadly, they are already toast.

Lowering the up-front cost by

Lowering the up-front cost by $100 is cool, but I still think a lot of people on a budget are put off by the cost of the monthly data plan. Until that changes, I don't see a cheaper, smaller iPhone really being that much more popular.

ATT said they are considering

ATT said they are considering a lower-cost data plan so a 4GB EDGE only - no WiFi device for $99 would be fine more those with only modest smart-phone and limited music needs. Load it up with a few games, a couple of hours of music, Pandora or Slacker and sync to your Google or iCal accounts and you have the perfect phone for adults and moderate business users. Kids will always want the latest and greatest and unfortunately so will many older Americans and others around the world - hence the problem we face of a global community currently.

My guess is the current 3G iPhone - 8GB for $99 when the new iPhone is released sometime late this month.

Consumers are not seeing the benefit

2226

Apple has dropped the ball a little this time.. not only is the 3G S not up to par (still the same low res screen?) but the network here in the UK (O2) is simply stacking on the new iPhone to their range without really decreasing any prices. The old iPhone 3G remains at pretty much the same price despite Apple's price cuts.

Big profits for the network - rather unfortunate for consumers, especially early adopters who are now stuck in a long contract and no upgrade path.
