According to Seeking Alpha, Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek thinks there is going to be a pretty big shakeup in the iPhone line this year.
Three new iPhones could be coming in 2009. The first is a 32G iPhone in multiple colours that is likely to arrive during the next six months. Next up is a lower-cost handset based on the 2.5G iPhone, which is targeted for China and India. Third is a smaller version – about one-third the size of the 3G iPhone – that costs 40% less and is also likely before year-end.
He quotes carriers who believe the smaller iPhone could have a $99 price point. But he doesn't believe there will be a voice only version. We're not sure where he came up with the colors idea even though the 32GB size is a gimme.
Do we buy it? Nope. Will Apple ever use these colors?->
Double nope.

We're sticking to the new ARM processor, expanded features, new 3.0 software, better form factor route. How bout you?

I could imagine a recession
I could imagine a recession special - an iPod touch with pay as you go cell capability. Internet by wifi is good enough for many.
Here's another recession
Here's another recession special: A fake iPhone body, witha little sound chip installed, so that when you press the home button you hear a voice that could be your wife nag at you about all the stuff she needs and how she should have married someone of Madoff's stature.
As long as it has 32gb, video
As long as it has 32gb, video recording, and copy & paste I will be happy. Regardless of whether any of those come true I'm still buying one. I've waited 2 years for this and won't hold off anymore.
It needs the same screen size
It needs the same screen size but over all smaller. It needs a camera at least 5mp and video. A front facing camera with ichat. A miles better battery and all those little things like SMS forwarding, copy and paste etc
And room for your luggage,
And room for your luggage, and a quest bedroom, and enough solar panels to power your neighborhood.
I think an aluminum design to
I think an aluminum design to match the rest of their products would be nice. Something like this fake someone did in the run up to the iPhone 3G launch:
http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/06/06/breaking-exclusive-leaked-pics-of-t...
Especially if they bring the anodized aluminum over to the iPod touch. If you've noticed Apple goes through cycles with the shiney stainless backs. As soon as people forget how badly they scratch Apple brings them back as cool and stylish. The a year or two later they go to a design without it and talk about its durability.
I'm with you on the Alu...
You're about the only other person who thinks it should match the rest of their lineup. Here's to hoping.
As long it has video ichat,
As long it has video ichat, camera with a flash, video, run Aperture, have USB and firewire, blu-ray drive, full manual keyboard, touchpad, led backlit display and a 256gb SSD......only THEN will I buy one.......

don't be absurd. get a laptop to do your editing.
i mean, we may as well be able to play World of Warcraft on an iPhone, have Photoshop, watch Blu-Ray with mini-discs, & be able to drive our cars.
idiotic, stupid, and retarded...
did the poster's "sarcasm"
did the poster's "sarcasm" brackets not show up on your computer? he was kidding. K-I-D-D-I-N-G. Funny that you used the moniker "9to5Mac is getting dumb". Or did i miss sarcasm warnings on your post?
On to a different matter: the story quotes the analyst predicting one of the new phones will be " about one-third the size of the 3G iPhone". THAT would be a huge (contradictory pun intended) change in form. Do you think it more likely he meant it would be one-third smaller than the current model? There's a big difference in the two expectations. It's hard to imagine how an adequate screen could fit on a phone 1/3 the current size. (current: 10.9 sq in; one-third that--even if we round up to 12", given the "about" in the prediction--one third would be 4 square inches. So a phone 2 x 2? 1.6" X 2.5?) The limiting factor is the need for an adequate screen. Of course it's gotta be practical to hold it to your ear * and still have the mic close enough to your mouth to pick up your speech. So a tricky design challenge.
I wouldn't put it past a company that produced the shuffle. Maybe it would * require a headset, though that's hard to imagine succeeding in the marketplace. Or maybe it would come with its own BT headpiece.
Now, "one third smaller" is quite a different matter, giving you 8 sq inches to play with. Find a way to reposition the mic and home button on the current 3G phone, eliminate that real estate, and you would have a phone that's one third smaller while maintaining the current screen size. I wouldn't put that past apple's wizards, either.
what do others think?
that previous post was
that previous post was totally not sarcasm
to the people requesting
to the people requesting front facing camera with ichat....have you ever seen anyone do a video call on a phone? i havnt ever, i have several friends with front cams on nokias etc that have never used them.
So basically, the Mac rumor
So basically, the Mac rumor community never learned. Remember all the hype over all the supposed new features for the 3G that never happened? I guess it will be the same thing this year with the 3rd gen.
Why 2.5G for China & India.
Why 2.5G for China & India. Those countries already have GSM and other 3G technologies
And why a low-cost phone
And why a low-cost phone specifically for China and India? I don't see why Apple needs to lower the cost of iPhone for China while the unlocked iPhone market has already been huge. Plus, Apple never goes the "cheap" route.
colors is believable
Do I think that analysts have some inside track to the roadmap plans of Apple? No.
But now that the iPhone has gone to a plastic shell, why not offer multiple colors? In fact, they already do! When the iPod nano first came out, it too was available in white or black... now what do we have? Hell, color choices has been something of an Apple thing from the iBook to the iPod Mini.
Thy need something to write
Thy need something to write about and since most people are clueless when it comes to Apple, the best he can do is color. Oh, and completely go against the recent financial statements by Tim Cook that Apple won't play in the low end phone market.
Everyone's gotta justify their pay. As long as his bosses buy this crap, he'll keep writing it.
Analysts...
are dumb. And never understand Apple. How long will they suggest a mini iPhone when Apple flat out rejected it and gave damn good reason to avoid it???
