O2 today released plans for a September 16th Pay as you go plan. What is really interesting about this one is the pricing. You pay once for the iPhone AND data (£349.99 and the 16GB version for £399.99). The initial price covers data fo the whole year (and is £10/month after the first 12 months). Not bad! Um AT&T, got anything to say about this?!?!
Also note the date of release September 16th...
Pay & Go customers can now enjoy the iPhone 3G without a monthly contract. The new iPhone 3G 8GB for Pay & Go will be available for £349.99 and the 16GB version for £399.99.
This also includes unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi for the first 12 months after you activate your iPhone 3G*. At the end of the 12 months you can continue to receive unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi for just £10 per month. We'll notify you before the end of the 12 month period by text and you can easily unsubscribe if you choose to do so.
It will be available to buy from 16th September in O2 stores, The Carphone Warehouse and Apple stores.
Please note visual voicemail and call merging are not available with Pay & Go. You'll also need to change your data settings to use services such as Mobile Internet. Take a look at the activation tab on this page for more information.
See more on O2's website.

So, the rumored Sept 9th will come on the 16th, or announcement will come on the 9th and deliver on the 16th?
Yes! Yes! No. How could they
Yes! Yes!
No. How could they not include visual voicemail! That is one of the key features of the iPhone and they don't even offer it as an option. Uggh.

Hardly.. Had an iphone since the 2G came out and use it precisely zero times.
Text supplanted voicemail years ago.

This is not compelling in any way, look at what you get a locked handset for £350 with wifi, lets say you actually want a phone then you are going to pay extra for the calls and sms - £10-£30 per month minimum I reckon. No visual voicemail.... don't want to use it as a phone get an ipod touch or buy an UNLOCKED iphone from Italy for about £400. Did I mention how awful O2 are?
not so cheap...
in Italy it cost 461£ (596€) plus shipping... not such a good deal...
Voicemail
If you are so bothered about visual voicemail take out the contract.
Can you really find a better deal than this? I doubt it.
Basically you lay out £349 and then if you dont make calls you can use the iphone for a year for nothing - yes nothing.
Stop whining about a minor issue - you dont get an iphone because it has visual voicemail you muppet.
Yeah thats correct genius,
Yeah thats correct genius, you use 'for a year for nothing' use it as what? Its a phone you dork and you don't want to use it as one - get a friggin Ipod Touch - one born every minute!
So the ipod touch has
So the ipod touch has unlimited Wifi and 3G and can accept incoming phone calls? Thought not. Some of us have perfectly good land lines and don't need outgoing mobile.
The iphone is a *great* deal at that price if you primarily want it for the data.
....and what good is a touch
....and what good is a touch to me when im not in a wifi hotspot????
I think you need to use the word dork a bit more often - maybe when looking in the mirror.
You were/are completely missing the point. If you just want a phone - but a nokia. If you want a device that gives you email, net blah blah blah then buy the iphone. The iphone isnt just a phone is it prick.
I have a first gen iphone handed down to me by my wife who has the 3G version and im currently using it on O2 PAYG - im yet to make a call with it and have sent about 8 txts but i use it for several hours every day browsing the net, emailing etc etc. You cant do that with a touch.
The point i was making is that not everyone has a phone to dial out on it....lots of people do as i do and that costs me £10 a month and for a new user will cost them £349 and then nothing for a year.

not for nothing! There's a
not for nothing! There's a minimum £10 monthly top up, so after for the first year, you'll be paying £10 / month, then £20 to keep unlimited data.
Still over the course of 18 months it's still cheaper than a contract, depending on how much you call of course.
Also, don't know at this time how easy it would be to get the phone unlocked.
No there isn't. It's pay and
No there isn't. It's pay and go.. you don't have to topup anything. The £10 minimum is for 'bonuses' like free call or text allowances, that you can get for being a regular payg user.
There's a 6 months timeout - if you don't use anything billable for 6 months the SIM deregisters (they do that to stop lots of dead numbers hanging around) - but that's not exactly onerous. All PayG phones do something similar.
So yes you could buy the phone and not pay anything more for a year, just using it for incoming & browsing the web via 3G and Wifi (which is probably worth the price alone), provided you did something with it about 6 months in like dial the speaking clock or something.
O2 Pay As You Go costs
Was disappointed when they didn't offer on launch, and I thought O2 might wait until Xmas. The reason is I don't phone much, so a set monthly amount isn't attractive, but I do lots of browsing and email so this is a great deal for my usage profile. If it costs £399 + I use £10 a month on PAYG = £620 a year, compared with a range of £640 to £1350 on a contract, and I can unsubscribe after a year, no contest. Sept 16? Be there or be square. Any idea about O2's tethering policy? Or where I can download Netshare?
If you only want it for a
If you only want it for a year it's £399 + zero. or £399 a year. Plus call costs of course.
Data is free for the first year.. which is damned good deal IMO.
You can stop using it after a year easily.. you're not actually subscribed to anything in the first place.. Just don't pay them and you revert to a standard PayG with no data allowance.
Ok
I grant not having VVM is a bit of a letdown, but with Pay and Go markets being primarily aimed at teenagers and young adults, not many of them will actually need it, meaning the feature would be lost there anyway.
The iPhone bolt on is saving you £120 for your first year with the device, and you still get free monthly allowances, O2 Rewards every 3 months and other great benefits.
There's a reason we're number one in the customer satisfaction index.
Also, with the highest UK mobile network signal we're pretty darn good there too.
And on a quick aside, the C902 on pay and go? £229.00
Better camera but much less fully featured.
To get free allowances you need to top up £10 anyway.
I bet you're on Orange...
O2 have the absolute worst
O2 have the absolute worst customer service - there is a reason why so many people want to unlock the iphone. iphone = yes O2 = no its as simple as that.
Vodafone 100 mins / 100 texts / 500mb data @ £12.50 p/m on Gen 1 iphone.
LOLS
Satisfied
Buying a 16GB, probably in October. The 12 Months of free data, value of £120 (Which I would have paid for each month anyway) offsets the £400 price as far as I'm concerned.
