iPhone SDK torrent on the Internet

We don't condone torrenting stuff or bypassing Apple's $99-$199 charge for developing iPhone applications but thought it would be prudent to report that the iPhone SDK is now floating around the torrent sites. The DMG file weighs in at 2.1 GB and is the real deal we can confirm.

If you actually are successful in developing an application with this, you will be forced to pay Apple the normal price before they publish the application on their site, one must assume.

it will ask you for a login and password - just enter any apple ID and pass - like your iTunes login. Apple obviously isn't trying too hard to keep this under wraps!

Apple doesn't want you to know about this shortcut - if you take the prescribed route, you have to register and pay th money.

Hi guys... while it may be a great thing on the torrents (cause it is faster to download) but it do is free to download!

As already said earlier... if you use any Apple ID you're good to go (download)!

This does NOT have anything to do with avoiding the $99 charge.

The file iphone_sdk.dmg (which is available from ADC after registering free of charge) just contains Xcode 3.1 with the iPhone cross-compiler and the iPhone simulator.

AFAIK it's not even possible yet to sign up for the $99 iPhone developer program.

yes, the download from apple is free and it is a minor hassle to register.

this torrent exists because it is faster to download this way instead of via http, expecially right after launch when apple's servers were hammered. this is precisely the reason why the bittorrent protocol was invented.

I've already downloaded the iPhone SDK and it is free to all ADC members which includes the people who join but don't have to pay. I wish I knew about this torrent yesterday though, it is darn difficult to get the download to work from Apple and takes quite a long time to download. I wouldn't mind giving back to the community with this torrent.

As said above, this is available on the ADC (Apple Developer Connection) website.

To clear up confusion, there are TWO components to the iPhone SDK:

The SDK is free for anyone who signs up as an Apple Developer. It is not "hidden", it is in plain site, and they ask you to download it.

The ability to develop apps for the iPhone/touch and actually RUN them on a phone (as opposed to the simulator) AND put the on the store will cost you $99 (for Standard) and $299 (for Enterprise). Note that this program itself is also in beta, and so is only being offered to a select few (and only in the US) at the moment. Presumably this will open up to every ADC member around the June timeframe.
